Abstract

Haiku, the 5-7-5 syllables of Japanese poetry, has been known widely as a tool to express voice and reflect on what happens to personal life experiences. Therefore, this study aimed to uses Haiku as a learning reflection on the Children’s Literature Class. Two questions were addressed to examine (1) Students’ perception of writing Haiku as a learning reflection and (2) challenges in writing Haiku as a learning reflection. Descriptive case A descriptive case study was used as the research methodology, while 49 students taking children's literature class participated. In data collection, this study used open-ended questionnaires given to all participants, while semi-structured interviews were delivered to 11 representative students. Students’ Haiku also were used as additional data. In addition, the data were analyzed thematically, using the framework of Braun and Clark (2006) and students’ Haiku were analyzed through document analysis. The findings show that students find that writing haiku as a learning reflection is fun and interesting. It also promotes their creativity in writing. However, since Haiku is fixed verse poetry, it does not cover students’ ideas of expressing their experience of learning freely and effectively. Eventually, Haiku still supports creativity, not effectiveness.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the representation of foreign and Indonesian cultural content in three English textbooks of 9th-grade junior high school students in Indonesia. This is descriptive qualitative research and uses a multicultural perspective approach. The data was taken from three English texts books, Think Globally Act Locally, English in Focus and Bright An English. The content analysis of this textbook was carried out using four aspects of the cultural dimension; product, practice, perspective, and person. The data was analyzed, from two perspectives; the perspective of cultural components and the perspective of cultural presentation levels. Based on the data analysis, it has been discovered that Indonesian culture is overrepresented in the three English textbooks, resulting in a poor presentation of foreign cultural elements. Product dimension is the most prevalent in textbooks, followed by person dimension, practice dimension, and perspective dimension based on percentage distribution. The cultural content of the English textbooks reveals an unbalance between foreign and Indonesian cultures. Most of the English-language textbooks contain Indonesian cultures, while only a few include other cultures. In comparison to Indonesian cultures, there are fewer foreign cultural representations in the English textbooks. It is recommended that English textbooks should include more materials from the cultures of English-speaking countries.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the students’ perceptions of synchronous online learning using Google Meet. Synchronous online learning is applied to facilitate the students to acquire knowledge during this pandemic. However, the students’ perception of the synchronous online using Google Meet in a specific skill in ELT is still understudied. A qualitative case study was used to investigate this phenomenon. The participants of this study were 18 students in the first semester who were Electrical Engineering major. The participants were chosen purposively due to class participation and willingness. The data was gathered from the questionnaire and interviews. It was analyzed using the Interactive Model of Data Analysis. This study exposed that the students positively perceived implementing synchronous online learning using Google Meet in reading class. They pointed out that it could help the students read more and feel motivated to be active. It also aided to increase their reading by online discussion. However, they found some challenges which they perceived during synchronous online learning. The challenges came from environmental, technical, and personal problems. The implication of this study relates to continuing the teaching-learning process of synchronous online learning using Google Meet. It provides some benefits that support the teaching learning process. Then, the institution and the government should support and promote the effectiveness of synchronous online learning by improving their learning and providing the necessary learning infrastructure for all students.
