Abstract

School bullying significantly undermines children's psychological well-being, academic achievement, and school safety in Indonesian primary education. Although proactive school counseling and collaborative leadership are recognized individually in bullying prevention research, their integrated structural relationships remain understudied. This study uniquely examines how these constructs jointly relate to anti-bullying policy effectiveness, addressing Indonesia's Permendikbudristek Number 46 of 2023. Purpose of this study is to examine the associations between proactive counseling management, collaborative school leadership, and anti-bullying policy effectiveness, with school climate as a mediating pathway. Method: Quantitative explanatory survey employing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM-PLS). Sample and Data Collection: 100 respondents (elementary teachers, school counselors, school principals) from elementary schools in Magelang Regency, obtained through purposive sampling. Data collected via standardized Likert-scale questionnaires. Results: Proactive counseling management (comprising systematic counseling services, prevention-based counseling, and teacher-counselor engagement; all loadings >0.79) was associated with anti-bullying policy effectiveness (direct effect = 0.369, p < 0.001). Collaborative school leadership (joint decision-making, counselor support, open communication; loadings ≥0.806) showed stronger associations (direct effect = 0.590, p < 0.001). Both constructs jointly related to policy effectiveness through direct pathways and school climate mediation, explaining 72% of variance (R² = 0.72). Implications: School leaders should establish formalized collaborative decision-making forums and transparent communication systems. School counselors should document services systematically and demonstrate evidence-based program impacts. System administrators should develop integrated professional development combining leadership and counseling competencies, with accountability measures recognizing both contributions.

Abstract

This article examines the socio-cultural factors that shape women’s participation in empowerment group at a tea plantation area in Highland West Java. Applying a qualitative ethnographic method, the study draws on data obtained through participant observation and in-depth interviews with members of a women’s empowerment group, named Kalintem Sabeungkeutan. The results of this study suggest that women’s participation in empowerment activities is shaped by interrelated factors, including social capital and networks, gender relations, prevailing norms, and local cultural values. Women’s participation unfolds through everyday negotiations within household and community contexts, particularly in relation to domestic responsibilities and social expectations. Social capital, manifested in trust and a sense of togetherness, facilitates engagement in collective activities, while gendered divisions of labour and subtle social norms may constrain participation. For the women involved, empowerment is recognised through practical and relational experiences, such as gaining space to learn, feeling socially accepted, and contributing to family and community life. At the same time, differences in values, orientations toward learning, and norms of reciprocity shape who remains involved and who gradually withdraws. This study highlights the necessity of developing empowerment strategies that are culturally grounded and inclusive. Recognising empowerment as a socially embedded and relational process, this will enable women to sustain participation within their communities. The practical implications suggest the importance of expanding social capital from bonding to bridging and designing empowerment initiatives that account for women’s domestic responsibilities to enhance inclusivity and sustainability.

Abstract

Despite high internet penetration rates, the benefits of digitalization remain unevenly distributed in Indonesia’s densely populated urban areas. This study investigates RT/RW  Net, a community-driven internet network that has emerged as a grassroots response to the digital divide in Jabodetabek. While often viewed primarily through a legal or technical lens, the socio-economic implications of these networks remain under-explored. Using an interpretive phenomenological approach, this study analyzes data from in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis involving network managers, users, and local community leaders. The findings reveal that residents adopt RT/RW Net primarily due to affordability and flexible payment schemes. Beyond connectivity, these networks function as mechanisms for Community Driven Digital Inclusion (CDDI), fostering social cohesion through "digital gotong royong" and enabling micro-economic activities. However, sustainability is threatened by legal ambiguity and the risk of enforcement actions. The article concludes by recommending a regulatory framework that legitimizes community networks through cooperative licensing models to ensure inclusive digital transformation.

Abstract

Interfaith social interaction in the workplace represents a crucial yet underexplored dimension of religious tolerance in plural societies. This study examines the social interactions between Muslim workers and non-Muslim visitors at the Avalokitesvara Temple in Pamekasan, Indonesia, a Buddhist place of worship that employs workers from diverse religious backgrounds. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through non-participant observation, in-depth interviews with Muslim workers and non-Muslim visitors, and documentation. The findings reveal that social interactions within the temple environment are predominantly associative, characterized by cooperation, accommodation, and mutual respect. Initially driven by economic motives, these interactions gradually developed into broader social relationships grounded in trust, tolerance, and respect for religious differences. Muslim workers demonstrated adaptive strategies, including professional conduct, respectful communication, and boundary awareness during religious rituals, while institutional openness and family support strengthened their sense of comfort and belonging. This study contributes to the literature on interfaith relations by highlighting how everyday workplace interactions can function as a practical arena for fostering religious tolerance and social harmony in multicultural societies.

Abstract

This research examines the extent to which time management and work–life balance contributes to the academic performance of part-time students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur. The study is grounded in the increasing demands experienced by part-time students who must simultaneously navigate academic commitments, occupational responsibilities, and personal obligations. Using a quantitative methodological approach, this study gathered data through a structured questionnaire distributed to 110 part-time students. The relationships between the independent variables and academic performance were examined using multiple linear regression analysis. The results reveal that effective time management has a positive and statistically significant effect on academic performance. Furthermore, work–life balance is found to significantly and positively contribute to students’ academic outcomes. From a theoretical perspective, this study extends the application of Expectancy Theory within the context of Indonesian higher education by demonstrating how motivational mechanisms operate among part-time students managing multiple roles. Practically, the findings underscore the importance of institutional interventions, such as time management training and flexible academic support systems, in enhancing part-time students’ academic success.

Abstract

This study addresses the deficit in social capital and community participation as primary challenges to sustainable rural tourism. By challenging the dichotomy between 'given' and 'chosen' social capital, this research positions social engineering as a measurable, exogenous variable for optimizing community assets. Using a mixed-methods approach in the Bukit Lawang case study, the research combines thematic analysis of interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with quantitative verification through the Village Development Index (VDI). Findings confirm that social engineering, specifically the formation of Pokdarwis successfully transformed traditional gotong royong into productive collaboration and strengthened communal trust. This qualitative shift is validated by significant VDI increases in the Economic (+24), Environmental (+25), and Political (+23) sectors. The study concludes that social capital is a necessary ontological precursor to effective physical investment. The resulting Replicable Model recommends mandating social engineering as a front-loaded strategy to ensure resilient, equitable, and sustainable performance, asserting that engineered social capital is a prerequisite for village-level democratization and policy legitimacy.

Abstract

This article examines local communities' knowledge of tobacco plants, offering a different perspective on the general reality. The paradox of biomedical discourse on tobacco is constructed by the community holistically as traditional medicine. This study uses a longitudinal ethnographic qualitative approach. Data were obtained through participant observation and in-depth interviews with tobacco farmers, tobacco smokers, community leaders, and cultural experts. The researchers also collected ethnobotanical inventory data using the triad test and pile sorting techniques to identify plants used for medicinal purposes. The results of this study show that tobacco is associated with rituals and medicine, thereby constructing a perspective on the paradox of biomedical discourse. Tobacco is legally consumed in the form of rokok lintingan to relieve stress, warm the body, and treat hoarseness. In addition, the community uses it to care for teeth and treat external wounds with its sap. This study reveals the existence of holistic cognitive ethnobotany practices in traditional medicine. Domain analysis found that ecological conditions determine the emergence of interactions between the community and tobacco plants, which serve as a "savior." The results of free listing, salience analysis, and folk classification indicate that the Kemloko 2 and 3 tobacco varieties are the most widely used. This research presents an empirical perspective on tobacco that does not contradict biomedical claims. This study can serve as a reference for developing holistic and sustainable public health programs.

Abstract

Human trafficking in Indonesia's border regions is closely linked to illegal or non-procedural migration practices, particularly in Nunukan Regency, which borders Malaysia. This situation is exacerbated by a highly centralized governance structure, which limits the role of local governments in responding to the rapid and informal nature of migration and human trafficking. This study aims to analyse the policy framework for handling human trafficking crimes in the context of illegal migration, highlighting the limitations of local government authority in a decentralized system. This study uses a literature review and qualitative policy analysis based on documents, including laws and regulations, national and regional policies, relevant academic literature, and reports from international organizations. The analysis was conducted using a transnational governance framework and the concept of delegated authority. The results of the analysis show that there is a governance gap in the supervision of non-procedural migration, data collection on migrant workers, cross-border coordination, and initial protection of victims of human trafficking due to the dominance of central government authority. These findings are analytical and normative, not empirical, and show that the limitations of local governments' roles are a consequence of the policy's institutional design. This study concludes that the development of a limited, accountable delegated authority scheme has the potential to strengthen local governments' roles in border areas in addressing the link between illegal migration and human trafficking, and recommends further empirical research to test its effectiveness in implementation.

Abstract

This study examines the preservation of cultural identity amid modernization and globalization through the case of Hatta Kabong, a Belitung craftsman whose weaving and songket embody Malay identity. Despite their symbolic and economic value, these textiles face declining youth interest, artisan regeneration gaps, market competition, and tensions over commercialization. Previous studies largely discuss craft sustainability at the community or industry level, leaving limited analysis of how individual artisans strategically negotiate identity in changing socio-economic contexts. Addressing this gap, this research analyzes how tradition and modernity are reconciled through innovation, cultural diplomacy, and craft education. The study’s novelty lies in proposing an integrated identity-preservation model that links individual agency, cultural diplomacy, and educational transmission within a single analytical framework, thereby extending discussions of cultural sustainability beyond structural approaches. Using a qualitative case study, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed through systematic data reduction and interpretative categorization. The findings show that identity is sustained through design hybridization, institutionalized regeneration via Rumah Budaya Kabong, cross-ethnic participation, and international festivals as instruments of soft power, although efforts remain vulnerable to resistance and reliance on individual leadership. The study concludes that sustainable preservation requires balancing authenticity and innovation through institutional support and recommends integrating craft education into formal and informal curricula to strengthen intergenerational transmission and global competitiveness.
