Abstract

The study aims to examine the rhetorical transformation of Ustaz Felix Siauw’s da'wah in digital media. Using a qualitative method and Aristotle’s rhetorical theory (ethos, logos, pathos), this study analyzes his appearance in a Malaka YouTube podcast. The unit of analysis in this study is the verbal transcript of the podcast episode, which lasts over an hour and is publicly accessible. Data were collected through observation of the podcast video, followed by transcription, and categorization based on Aristotle’s three main rhetorical elements. The findings reveal his strategic use of credibility, logical argumentation, and emotional appeal to reshape his image. While his ideological content remains rooted in Islamic political thought, his delivery has become more dialogical and adaptive. The study concludes that this shift signifies a rhetorical moderation in style, not a fundamental change in ideological orientation.

Abstract

This scientometric study investigated the evolving intellectual landscape concerning the interplay between grammaticalization and semantic bleaching within idiomatic constructions. To achieve this objective, the study meticulously analyzed a dataset comprising 356 scholarly publications extracted from the Scopus database, spanning the period from 2014 to 2024. The research employed bibliographic data analysis and keyword clustering as primary analytical techniques. Our findings reveal four salient thematic clusters: “theory” (31.62% of notable keywords), “grammaticalization” (30.88%), “corpus & frequency” (29.41%), and “syntax & change” (8.09%). These clusters comprehensively underscore the most notable theoretical frameworks, methodological approaches, and specific linguistic subfields that significantly contribute to this active research area. To some extent, the findings provide a detailed overview of current research and suggest avenues for further investigations, particularly those employing corpus-based methods and incorporating insights from cognitive linguistics and construction grammar to further explore grammaticalization in specific languages, such as Indonesian. This scientometric studyinvestigated the evolving intellectual landscape concerning the interplay between grammaticalization and semantic bleaching within idiomatic constructions. Abstract

This research aims to analyze The New York Times’s role in representing the #MeToo movement from 2017 to 2023. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Analysis (CBCDA) framework using Fairclough’s (2013) theory. The data were collected from 108 The New York Times articles containing the keyword “#MeToo” and compiled into a corpus using AntConc 3.4.4w. The analysis involved interpreting verbs and adjectives of collocation and concordance, followed by discourse practice and socio-cultural practice analysis. The findings reveal that the collocation of “#MeToo” is associated with verbs and adjectives that carry both positive and negative connotations. At the discourse practice level, The New York Times tends to portray women in the context of power inequality. Furthermore, the socio-cultural practice analysis indicates that the #MeToo movement reflects broader economic, political, and cultural dimensions. Overall, the results show that The New York Times embeds its ideology in representing the #MeToo movement. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that The New York Times not only reports on the #MeToo movement but actively participates in shaping its public meaning.
