Abstract

Most students in Indonesia still need help with English pronunciation and speaking due to the interference of local languages in students’ oral English production. This study aims to describe the interference of the Bugis language, a local language spoken in Southeast Sulawesi, on students’ English speaking skills. The data for this research were collected from 24 seventh-grade students at a junior high school in Poleang Selatan, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. The participants included 10 males and 14 females. The study seeks to examine how the Bugis language influences students’ oral English during speaking activities in the classroom. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, using an interactive model for data analysis. The process included analyzing, categorizing, coding, displaying data, and drawing conclusions. The results revealed that most students made numerous pronunciation errors with English vowel sounds such as /ʌ/, /ɪ/, /i:/, /u:/, /ɒ/, /ə/, /ӕ/, and /ʊ/, which were influenced by the Bugis language. Consequently, students tended to rely on guessing based on their prior knowledge of their native language.

Abstract

This research examines the implementation and effectiveness of the asynchronous project-based learning model in Social Studies at the elementary school level. Using a mixed-methods approach, the qualitative aspect addresses the implementation process, while the quantitative aspect evaluates effectiveness through a pretest-posttest control group design. Conducted in the fifth grade of an Islamic elementary school, the study involves 36 students divided into experimental and control groups. Data is collected via observation, interviews, and learning outcome tests, analyzed using qualitative descriptive and inferential techniques. The study identifies five stages of asynchronous project-based learning: preparation, orientation, literation, collaboration, and presentation. The findings show that this learning model effectively enhances students' Social Studies outcomes. An independent sample t-test reveals a significant improvement in gain scores for the experimental group compared to the control group. Additionally, the average learning outcomes in the experimental group meet the class passing grade, confirming the model's effectiveness.KATA KUNCI: pembelajaran asynchronous, project, Ilmu pengetahuan Sosial

Abstract

This study explores the academic experiences of Indonesian EFL students participating in an exchange program at a private university in the Philippines. Using a phenomenological approach, this study examines how students adapt to differences in instructional methods, assessment styles, and collaborative learning practices. Findings reveal that Indonesian students initially struggle with the transition from a teacher-centered learning environment to a student-centered approach that emphasizes active participation. Frequent quizzes and formative assessments at the host institution contrast with the summative evaluation methods in Indonesia, requiring them to adjust their study habits. The shift from independent to group-based research assignments challenges their accustomed academic behaviors but enhances teamwork and problem-solving skills. This study implies the need for pre-departure training programs to better prepare exchange students for academic cultural differences.

Abstract

Violence against children is an intentional act that causes emotional and physical harm. Recovery and services for child victims of sexual violence often focus on legal and health interventions, neglecting social and psychosocial recovery. This research analyzes the form of intervention for child victims of sexual violence in Kendari's official institutions. It employs a qualitative descriptive method, emphasizing the natural character of the data without using calculations. The research reveals a high and increasing incidence of child sexual violence in Kendari, affecting all sub-districts. In response, the Kendari city government has issued regional regulations to protect children. The research highlights the need for psychosocial interventions for traumatized children. These interventions include: 1) Psychosocial Assistance, addressing the psychological and social conditions of affected children; 2) Counseling and Therapy, providing immediate attention to prevent worsening psychological burdens; 3) Support by UPTP2A Kendari, helping children resume their activities after receiving psychosocial services, counseling, and therapy.

Abstract

The necessity of learning through engagement using digital comic in the EFL context becomes increasingly challenging for EFL pre-service teachers. This study investigates the experiences of 47 EFL pre-service teachers from an Islamic higher education institution in Kendari, Indonesia, in designing digital comics as a learning platform. Using a case study approach, data were collected through reflective journals and a focused group discussion after a 5-week design process. Findings show most participants held positive attitudes toward digital comics, gaining skills in using applications and websites for learning. However, they faced challenges related to technology, self-regulation, design, and pedagogy. The study highlights the effectiveness of consultation sessions and recommends incorporating digital comics into foreign language teaching media courses. This study suggests the integration of technology-oriented platforms like digital comics across all educational levels to enhance engagement and move beyond traditional teaching materials.

Abstract

This qualitative case study included five EFL pre-service teachers who had completed 45 days of FTP at one of senior high schools in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi. This study aimed to investigate the physical geographies of pre-service teachers while they conducted their teaching practice. Reflective journals and interviews are data collection instruments constructed based on Hargreaves' emotional geographies theory to comprehend the emotions that arise after completing their field teaching experience in 45 days. This study discovered that the participants had both positive and negative feelings during their field teaching practicum (FTP) in physical geography aspects. As part of their physical geography dimensions, all participants maintained tremendous relationships with their students, colleagues, and mentor teachers at placement schools. As a result, their emotional geographies could involve the teacher's professional and cognitive abilities, which impact their field teaching practice.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate students' perceptions of interdisciplinary teacher collaboration (ITC) in ESP classes and to explore the challenges and problems students face during the implementation of ITC. The study involved 38 students from three non-English majors (Department of Agriculture, Department of Fisheries, and Department of Politics and Science). Quantitative and qualitative methods were employed, with the quantitative method used to investigate students' perception of ITC through team teaching and teachers' teaching methods in the ESP classroom. The qualitative method was used to explore the challenges and problems students faced during the implementation of ITC in the ESP context. Data was collected through a questionnaire on Google Forms and individual interviews with 12 students. The results showed that students had a positive reaction to the implementation of ITC, particularly in the areas of team teaching and teachers' teaching methods. However, challenges related to pronunciation, listening, misinterpretation, confidence, writing, grammar, and speaking were identified during the implementation of ITC.

Abstract

Moral education in higher education is essential for shaping students' character and ethical awareness. The philosophy of essentialism provides a relevant framework by emphasizing core knowledge and universal values as the foundation for moral development. This article explores the implications of essentialist philosophy in moral education using a library research method. Findings suggest that essentialism-based moral education enhances students' moral sensitivity, ethical reasoning, and social responsibility. Integrating essentialist values into the curriculum creates a supportive environment for character building and increases student engagement in moral learning. It also promotes active participation in social issues and strengthens students’ commitment to ethical behavior. Moreover, this approach supports the development of a positive academic culture through interactive, value-driven learning. In conclusion, essentialism offers a practical and philosophical foundation for advancing moral education in higher education, contributing to the formation of graduates who are not only intellectually capable but also morally grounded and socially conscious.
