Abstract

Exercise has a positive impact on a person's health and fitness level. However, the benefits could be obtained if the exercise is conducted properly by avoiding the risk involved. One of the risks during exercise, especially for those in urban communities, is the difficulty in avoiding air pollution. Air pollution, especially particles with a size less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5), can be inhaled into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. The amount of air pollution inhaled will increase in the people doing exercise because the rate of breathing increases along with the increasing intensity and duration of the exercise. This may impact the blood pressure response due to the presence of foreign particles in the bloodstream. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a post-test-only comparison group approach. The research was conducted in Karawang Regency, West Java, Indonesia, and included two sites, a higher PM2.5 Concentration site, and a lower PM2.5 Concentration site. The research subjects included 22 undergraduate students with a healthy status divided into two research groups. Each group performed exercise, including 5 minutes of warm-up and 15 minutes of running at submaximal intensity (80–85% of HR Max) at 07.00 for five days consecutively. Blood pressure response measurements were taken immediately after exercise. This study aimed to determine the effect of regular exercise in high and low air pollution conditions (PM2.5) on the blood pressure response. The study found that regular exercise for five days in an environment with high air pollution resulted in higher systolic and diastolic arterial pressures than a regular exercise in low air pollution conditions. Thus, performing exercise in high PM2.5 air pollution conditions affects the blood pressure response. For this reason, vulnerable groups should pay attention to air pollution levels when doing exercise.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic requires everyone to wear a mask as a preventive measure, including performing physical activities. This study aimed to determine the effect of medical mask use when performing physical exercises on oxygen saturation, vital signs, muscle endurance, and physical fitness index. The experimental analytical quantitative approach, with pre-test and post-test design, was used. Vital signs and oxygen saturation were measured briefly after brisk walking. The Push-up Test was conducted to measure muscle endurance, while the Harvard Step-up Test was used to measure Physical Fitness Index. The procedures were repeated twice, using medical masks and not using medical masks. The research subjects were 28 males aged 17-21 years with normal BMI. The results showed significant differences in the value of systolic blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, body temperature, oxygen saturation, muscle endurance, and physical fitness between the exercise using medical masks and not using medical masks. The p-values were 0.000 on all of these variables. A significant difference was also found in diastolic blood pressure with a p-value of 0.001. This study concludes that using medical masks during physical activity increases all vital sign parameters and decreases oxygen saturation, muscle endurance, and physical fitness levels.

Abstract

Volleyball is one of the most popular sports in the world. To be a professional volleyball player, a coach needs to know how to train their athletes. According to the physiological component, the most used energy of a volleyball player comes from ATP-PC and glycolysis. This study aimed to classify an anaerobic capacity standard of male volleyball athletes in Indonesia. In this study, 60 athletes participated in 2 levels: Junior 15-17-year-old High School student level and 18-25-year-old University student level. The samples were chosen according to their achievement in national-level competitions in the last few years. The measurement used the Running Anaerobic Sprint Test, Vertical Jump Test, and 5-Meter Multiple Shuttle Repeat Sprint Test. The analysis employed an ANOVA test using SPSS 16 and Tukey post hoc test. This study found differences in several anaerobic performance aspects of each position in the same level of competition and at the different levels of competition. In the junior-level athletes, a significant difference was found in the average power between outside hitter and libero, peak power vertical jump between middle blocker and libero, and total distance achieved among outside hitter, opposite hitter, and setter. Senior-level athletes showed a significance different in maximum power, average power, and fatigue index of outside hitters, middle blocker, opposite hitters, setter, and libero, peak power of vertical jump among hitters, setter, and libero, and total distance achieved by hitters, setter, and libero. In conclusion, senior-level athletes showed superiority shown by higher scores of anaerobic capacity than junior-level athletes. It is suggested to conduct more research on the characteristics of each position in volleyball to train athletes more effectively and efficiently according to their position.
