Abstract

Nagari Magek Village in Agam Regency, West Sumatra, faces significant challenges in managing clean water resources. To address these challenges comprehensively, a holistic approach is essential, involving through area analysis, water treatment, and evaluation of distribution networks to ensure efficient and equitable water distribution. It is crucial to adhere to the principles of water resource conservation, utilization, and management as stipulated in Law Number 17 of 2019 on water resource management, which must be observed to ensure legal clarity in water management practices. The community service team handles clean water problems in Nagari Magek by designing a clean water treatment system that includes aeration, sedimentation, and filtration units. This process improves water quality by reducing yellowish color and eliminating unpleasant odors. However, the capacity of the treatment plant is not able to meet the increasing water demand, while the galvanized pipe distribution network has not been functioning optimally. Based on simulations using EPANET 2.2 software, it was found that the water flow speed in the pipes was still below the optimal range due to the diameter of the pipes being too large. The solution applied was to increase the processing discharge to 10 L/s (0,01 m3/s), which succeeded in increasing the flow rate according to the regulatory criteria. This recommendation improves the efficiency of the distribution system and ensures better water quality for the people in Nagari Magek.

Abstract

Black Garlic is a product resulting from the thermolysis of garlic which is highly nutritious and has many benefits for the health of the human body. The problem that occurs is that black onion products are very rare and the price is very expensive. Limitations regarding equipment and from marketing and social aspects of the community include knowledge in producing black garlic, as well as marketing it to be able to increase partners' income sources. So far, partners have only used a simple method, namely an electronic rice cooker (Rice Cooker). The solution is to increase public understanding about the properties of black garlic and increase awareness of production so that it can get added value in the form of income if sold to the Utsman Bin Affan Islamic Boarding School. By using a thermolysis device with a capacity of 30 kg, it is possible to increase the quality and production of black garlic. The aim of the PkM implementation activities for the DRTPM Community Based Empowerment scheme in 2024 is to improve the quality of Black Garlic made by Pondok Tahfizh Utsman Bin Affan Pantai Labu by utilizing a thermolysis tool so that it can increase the level of income for partners. This service activity resulted in the production of 30 kg of black garlic on the 12th day of thermolysis with visualization results such as a slightly chewy texture, an even black color throughout, and a distinctive black garlic smell. The organoleptic results of black garlic have a taste that is dominated by sweetness and is slightly sour. The next plan in this service is to help partners in the packaging and marketing process using social media technology.

Abstract

Organic pollutants, including pesticides and industrial waste, have become a significant environmental challenge due to their persistence and difficulty in decomposition, posing serious threats to both environmental health and water quality. This issue is particularly pressing in regions like Penang, where rapid industrial development and urbanization have exacerbated water pollution. In response, various research efforts have explored potential solutions, with graphite emerging as an effective adsorbent for removing toxic compounds from water. Building on this, our study focuses on the synthesis of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), a material recognized for its high-performance photocatalytic properties. g-C3N4's unique structure and ability to harness solar energy make it a promising candidate for catalyzing the breakdown of organic pollutants into less harmful molecules. Our project aims to develop a cost-effective and scalable method for producing g-C3N4 using readily available materials, with the goal of mitigating organic pollution in Penang. Through a straightforward synthesis process, we seek to make this technology accessible for widespread adoption in water treatment practices. The successful synthesis of g-C3N4 has already been demonstrated, with the process being effectively shared with students from the School of Chemical Science at USM. While further refinements are needed to maximize results, our findings suggest that g-C3N4 can play a crucial role in reducing organic pollution and improving water quality, contributing to the long-term sustainability of Penang's environment.

Abstract

The community service program conducted in the fostered village of LPPM USU, namely Kuta Mbelin Village, STM Hulu District, Deliserdang Regency, which already has a village information system (https://s.id/kutambelin) as a manifestation of a digital village, should convert the population data processed conventionally into population data that can be integrated with the village's needs. This includes the ability to monitor population growth, facilitate correspondence and archiving, obtain village population statistics, and more. To improve this data, the fostered village team is implementing an open-source Village Information System, commonly known as Open SID. The data processed by the village using MS Excel covers two hamlets out of the three in Kuta Mbelin village. Hamlet I has 261 residents and Hamlet II has 532 residents, while Hamlet III is still being processed by the village operator. This existing population data needs to be refined and integrated into the Open SID-based population data platform by first performing data cleaning to ensure it can be incorporated into the village information system. The data entry process is continuously carried out by the LPPM USU community service team and village operators, involving USU MBKM KKN students in the village.
