Abstract

Politeness plays a vital role in social interaction, as it reflects cultural norms, social relationships, and the speaker’s communicative intentions. This study aims to explore and analyze the factors that influence the use of politeness strategies in both spoken and written forms of communication. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis across various communicative settings, The findings indicate that several key elements such as social status, interpersonal distance, The researcher also found the factors that influence the use of politeness strategies based on Brown and Levinson’s theory. They are pay-off in 10 times and relevant circumstances in 6 times (social distance in 1 time, relative power in 5 times). Pay-off was the highest of the factor that influence the use of politeness strategies. These insights are expected to support the development of pragmatic theory and foster greater awareness of polite language use in diverse communicative contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of using role play combined with audio-visual media to improve the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Lab School UNTAD Palu. The research was conducted in response to students’ difficulties in speaking English, such as limited vocabulary, incorrect pronunciation, and lack of self-confidence. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was used, involving two groups: an experimental group and a control group. Both groups were given a pre-test and a post-test to measure their speaking performance before and after the treatment. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software. The results showed that the experimental group made significant progress in their speaking skills, with the average score increasing from 60.00 in the pre-test to 82.11 in the post-test. In contrast, the control group showed only a small improvement, from 59.41 to 67.71. Statistical analysis confirmed that the use of role play supported by audio-visual media had a significant positive effect on students’ speaking abilities, particularly in improving their fluency and accuracy.

Abstract

This research analyzes the representation of hegemony of power in Tarik Saleh's 2022 film "Cairo Conspiracy". This film offers a complex narrative that highlights the dynamics of power, religion and Egyptian politics. Through qualitative analysis using Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony of power, this research aims to reveal how the film depicts an unbalanced power relationship between the state, religious institutions, and individuals. Based on his consent and coercion, the analysis focuses on a young man named Adam, who comes from the village of Manzala, and how the hegemony of state power manipulates religious institutions to maintain its dominance. Using the descriptive analytical method, this research concludes that the film "Cairo Conspiracy" exposes the practice of hegemony of power in Egypt's religious political system. The results of this research will be in the form of several points of consent or coercion, namely agreement on domination or coercion, and in this research, there are 13 data that have been analyzed, one example of which is political hegemony which in this film is coercive or forced.

Abstract

This investigation was conducted with the principal objective of examining the influence exerted by the utilization of folktales on enhancing the reading comprehension abilities of tenth-grade students at MAN 1 Palu. Employing a quasi-experimental methodology, the study encompassed two distinct cohorts: the experimental group, which engaged with narrative texts rooted in folktales, and the control group, which received instruction through conventional reading passages. The evaluative instruments comprised both pre-assessments and post-assessments, which incorporated multiple-choice items and essay prompts aimed at gauging comprehension at the literal level. Findings indicated that learners exposed to the folktale-based instructional approach exhibited a marked elevation in comprehension performance following the intervention. Specifically, the average achievement score within the experimental group rose from an initial mean of 28.21 to a post-treatment mean of 49.95. In contrast, the control group's mean score exhibited a modest increase, shifting from 28.45 to 30.05. Statistical validation using the Mann-Whitney U test produced a significance value of 0.007, thereby substantiating a statistically meaningful divergence between the two groups. This result necessitates the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis while concurrently rejecting the null. Consequently, it can be inferred that the incorporation of folktales into the reading curriculum substantively augments students’ literal reading comprehension capabilities in the context of tenth-grade learners at MAN 1 Palu.

Abstract

This research examines the use of kalam khobari (declarative sentences) in Qiṣṣat al-Miʿrāj, a book that documents the spiritual journey of Prophet Muhammad SAW.  The objectives of this study are (1) to identify and classify the types of kalam khobari, including ibtidā’ī, ṭalabī, and inkārī, and (2) to analyze their communicative purposes and functions in conveying spiritual messages. The research employs observation and note-taking as data collection techniques, while using the distributional method to analyze grammatical structures and meanings. The data is presented descriptively and interpretatively. The findings reveal a total of 69 kalam khobari expressions: 5 khabar ibtidā’ī, 53 khabar ṭalabī, and 11 khabar inkārī. The main communicative purposes are categorized into faidah al-khabar (58 instances) and lazīmul faidah (11 instances). Additionally, several secondary functions were identified, including izhār al-fakhr (displaying glory) in 7 sentences, tadzkīr bimā bayna al-marātib (reminding of status differences) in 5, tawbīkh (reproach) in 6, waʿẓ wa irshād (advice and guidance) in 14, izhār al-taḥassur (expressing regret) in 1, and taḥdhīr (warning) in 5 sentences. These results affirm that kalam khobari in Qiṣṣat al-Miʿrāj serves not only an informative function but also contributes significantly to emphasis, correction, motivation, and spiritual guidance within religious communication.

Abstract

This study analyzes the romantic formula in Midnight Sun (2018) by analyzing the plot and characterization through the lens of John G. Cawelti's romantic formula theory, supported by Radway's theory. Using a qualitative research design and an objective literary criticism approach, this study identifies the key elements of the romantic formula, including the initial meeting between the protagonists, the development of their relationship, the introduction of conflict, and its resolution. The findings show that Midnight Sun successfully applies the classic structure of romantic narratives. The film follows Cawelti's stages from the first meeting, the development of the relationship, emotional conflict, and ends with a bittersweet yet meaningful resolution. The characterization revealed by Radway reflects the romantic formula that provides emotional depth and satisfaction for the audience. The findings show that Midnight Sun follows the common romantic structure, where the relationship between the hero and heroine develops through emotional and situational obstacles before reaching a resolution. This study contributes to the broader discourse on romantic narratives in popular cinema, offering insights into the application of formulaic storytelling in contemporary films.

Abstract

Speaking is an essential component of English language learning, yet many EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students continue to struggle with fluency, confidence, and engagement in speaking activities. The integration of digital learning media is increasingly seen as a potential solution to these challenges, particularly through the use of audiovisual platforms such as Canva. This study aims to explore the perceptions of English language teachers and students regarding the use of Canva-based audiovisual media in improving students’ English speaking skills and supporting effective classroom management. Conducted at Pondok Pesantren Putra IMMIM Makassar, this qualitative study involved one English teacher and ten eighth-grade students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. The findings showed that teachers perceived Canva as a practical and innovative tool that supports structured lesson planning, increases student engagement, and aligns with 21st-century educational goals. Canva’s visual and audio features help improve focus, minimize distractions, and deliver content more effectively. Meanwhile, students gave positive perceptions, stating that Canva made speaking lessons more enjoyable, improved their understanding of the material, and increased their confidence in speaking. Although some technical limitations were noted, both teachers and students agreed that Canva significantly improved the overall learning environment. The study concludes by recommending consistent integration of audiovisual digital media to support teaching quality and speaking proficiency in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to examine whether the use of the Text Twist Game can improve the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 15 Palu. A quasi-experimental research design was employed involving two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The study used quantitative research with purposive sampling. Class VII A with 30 students was the experimental group, and Class VII B with 30 students was the control group. A vocabulary test was used as the instrument for data collection, administered both before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the treatment. The experimental group received instruction using a Text Twist Game, while the control group was taught using an explanation technique. The findings show that the post-test mean score of the experimental group is 56.33 while the control group’s post test mean score is 30. Additionally, the statistical analysis revealed that the value of the t-counted is greater (97.20) than the value of the t-table (0.117). It indicates that the vocabulary mastery of the experimental group outperformed that of the control group after getting treatment. In other words, the use of Text Twist Game is effective to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study focuses on the difficulties faced by low achiever students in learning English at SMA Negeri 7 Bulukumba, a rural school with limited educational resources. Using a descriptive qualitative case study, data were gathered from five low-performing students and two English teachers through interviews, observations, and documentation. Findings reveal that internal issues, such as low motivation, poor vocabulary, and grammatical difficulties, are compounded by external factors, including inadequate support, traditional teaching methods, and the unproductive use of technology. Although digital tools have potential, limited digital literacy and infrastructure hinder their effectiveness. The study calls for contextualized teaching, teacher training, and improved technological support to enhance English learning for low achievers in rural areas.

Abstract

This research aims to compare the emotions depicted in the main character in the 1996 movie Matilda to the movie Matilda in 2022. This research investigates the emotional evolution that occurs from the movie Matilda 1996 to the movie Matilda 2022. This research is comparative diachronic research by Zepetnek theory and uses a character psychology approach in literary works. In obtaining data, this research was analyzed using Elizabeth B. Hurlok's theory of children's emotions and applying qualitative descriptive methods with notetaking as a research instrument. The results of this research show that there are types of emotions children get from the character Matilda: emotions of anger, joy or happiness, grief, curiosity, fear and affection. Therefore, the researchers concluded that the emotions that occur in the character Matilda from the 1996 movie Matilda to the movie Matilda 2022 show that Matilda 2022 is more aggressive, more expressive, and braver than the movie Matilda 1996. Overall, this research reveals evolution of emotions that are influenced by the author's mindset towards children's characters related to current developments.
