Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration through ChatGPT in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills in the Islamic Education subject of Akidah Akhlak at the junior secondary level. Employing a quantitative approach with a pretest–posttest experimental design, complemented by qualitative analysis of students’ written responses, the research utilized critical thinking tests and response analysis sheets as instruments. The findings reveal a significant improvement in students’ critical thinking abilities, indicated by an increase in mean scores from 62.1 in the pretest to 84.6 in the posttest. The Mann–Whitney U test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), confirming the effectiveness of the AI-based intervention. Qualitative results further show substantial development across all indicators of critical thinking, including identifying relevant information, integrating religious evidence, analyzing social situations, constructing moral arguments, and engaging in reflective thinking. The study concludes that ChatGPT serves as an innovative and pedagogically effective learning tool in Akidah Akhlak, capable of enhancing cognitive engagement and fostering higher-order thinking skills. These findings contribute to the advancement of technology-assisted Islamic education and provide direction for future research on AI integration in religious learning contexts.

Abstract

Tolerance is one of the essential character traits that should be developed in elementary school students to foster mutual respect within cultural diversity. However, learning about cultural diversity still requires interactive and contextual learning media to help students better understand the material and apply the values of tolerance in their daily lives. This study aimed to develop a contextual-based cultural diversity learning media using Glide Apps to foster tolerance among fifth-grade elementary school students. This research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model. Data were collected through expert validation questionnaires, user response questionnaires, and a tolerance attitude instrument. The results of the study produced a digital learning media based on Glide Apps called “Edu Fun.” The validation results from media experts, material experts, and language experts obtained percentages of 88.33%, 95%, and 82,5%, respectively, which were categorized as very good. The trial results showed positive responses from students, while the N-Gain score of 0.32 indicated an improvement in students’ tolerance attitudes in the moderate category. Based on these findings, the developed learning media can be used to support the development of tolerance among fifth-grade elementary school students.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low literacy skills of elementary school students, particularly in reading comprehension, and their lack of engagement in literacy activities. The study aims to develop an educational literacy-themed Snakes and Ladders game based on South Sulawesi folktales as a learning medium that can improve students’ literacy skills. This study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE development model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The developed product was validated by media and subject matter experts, then pilot-tested with elementary school students. Research data were collected through validation questionnaires and student response questionnaires, then analyzed descriptively using percentage calculations. The results indicate that the developed educational media meets the criteria for high suitability based on expert evaluations and received very positive feedback from students. The use of the story-based literacy snakes-and-ladders educational game, inspired by South Sulawesi folklore, enhances student engagement in literacy activities, fosters a love of reading, and helps students better understand the content of their reading materials. Thus, the developed educational media can serve as an innovative learning alternative to support literacy activities in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study examines teachers' language politeness toward students and its implications for classroom learning interactions at MTs Alkhairaat Baliase. The study was motivated by the observation that teachers' ways of speaking influence classroom atmosphere, student participation, and the quality of teacher–student interaction, particularly among junior secondary school students who are highly sensitive to verbal treatment. The objectives of this study were to describe the forms of teachers' language politeness and to explain their role in shaping learning atmosphere and classroom interaction. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data consisted of teachers' utterances, students' responses, classroom interactions, interview results, and field notes collected through observation, recording, and interviews. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed 25 politeness-related data. Based on Brown and Levinson's theory, 16 data reflected positive politeness strategies and 9 data reflected bald-on-record strategies. Based on Leech's politeness principles, the data consisted of 10 agreement maxims, 4 tact maxims, 2 approbation maxims, and 8 violations of the approbation maxim. The findings indicate that polite language use by teachers contributes positively to creating a comfortable learning environment, encouraging student participation, increasing confidence in responding to questions, and fostering two-way interaction. Conversely, violations of politeness tended to reduce student participation by generating feelings of fear, embarrassment, and reluctance to engage in classroom interaction.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze teachers' dilemmas in enforcing discipline in the era of human rights, the implementation of the teacher code of ethics, and humanistic disciplinary enforcement strategies at SMP 1 Ulujami. The study used a qualitative approach with descriptive research and case studies. Data were obtained through observation and documentation studies, then analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis techniques. The results indicate that teachers face a dilemma in enforcing discipline because they must balance assertiveness with respect for students' rights. Challenges in student behavior influenced by technological and social media developments also affect teachers' authority in the learning process. In practice, the implementation of the teacher code of ethics is carried out through a fair, educational, and character-building approach. This study also found that humanistic disciplinary strategies, such as a dialogical approach, providing educational consequences, teacher role models, and collaboration with parents, can create a more conducive learning environment and support positive student character development.

Abstract

Text readability is a crucial aspect in determining the effectiveness of teaching materials, particularly at the elementary school level, which requires a match between reading difficulty and students' cognitive development. This study aims to analyze the readability of five story texts in thematic textbooks for grade IV elementary school students using the Fry graph method. This study employed a quantitative descriptive approach with an analysis technique based on counting the number of sentences and syllables in a 100-word sample text. The results showed that the texts' readability varied, ranging from grades IV to VI. Two texts were at the grade IV level, one text was in the grade IV-V range, and the other was in the grade V-VI range. This variation indicates that the text difficulty level in thematic textbooks is not entirely consistent with the reading ability level of grade IV students. This finding indicates that although some texts are appropriate for students' developmental levels, some texts are more complex and potentially hinder comprehension. Therefore, an evaluation of the development of teaching materials is needed to provide more attention to readability aspects in a proportional and hierarchical manner.

Abstract

This study examines language politeness in the 2024 public debate of governor and vice governor candidates of Central Sulawesi. Political debates are not only forums for presenting visions and missions but also arenas where candidates employ various communication strategies that may reflect politeness or violate politeness principles. Therefore, this study aims to describe the forms of language politeness and identify violations of politeness principles found in the debate. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach within the framework of pragmatics. The data consisted of utterances produced by the candidates during the third segment of the debate, which involved direct interaction among candidates. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data classification, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed 91 utterances containing politeness forms and politeness violations. Based on Leech’s politeness principle, five politeness maxims were identified, namely tact maxim, approbation maxim, agreement maxim, sympathy maxim, and modesty maxim. The most dominant politeness form was the tact maxim with 20 data, while the most frequent violation was the modesty maxim violation with 10 data. Based on Brown and Levinson’s theory, three politeness strategies were found: positive politeness, negative politeness, and bald-on-record. Positive politeness was the most dominant strategy with 57 data. The findings indicate that language politeness in political debates functions not only to maintain social relationships but also as a political communication strategy to build self-image, influence public opinion, and defend arguments in a competitive context.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the learning difficulties of junior high school students in the material of Linear Equations and Inequalities in One Variable (LEOV and LIOV) at SMP Negeri 1 Pujut. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach involving 55 students from classes VII-3 and VII-5. Data were collected through written tests, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that overall concept understanding was at a moderate level with an average achievement of 48.8%. The distribution of student abilities showed 41.82% in the high category, 23.64% in the medium category, and 34.54% in the low category. The lowest achievement was found in the indicator of applying concepts in problem solving (40.0%), while the highest was in restating concepts in one's own words (55.0%). The main difficulties experienced by students include errors in interpreting equality signs, incorrect transposition of terms, and failure to determine the solution set. Factors contributing to these difficulties include procedural-only learning approaches, lack of conceptual understanding, and insufficient variation in practice problems. These findings suggest that teachers should implement contextual and problem-based learning approaches to strengthen students' conceptual understanding.

Abstract

Speaking is an essential competence for vocational high school students because it supports academic communication and future workplace demands. This study examined whether TikTok-based instruction produced a significant difference in the speaking skills of tenth-grade Digital Business students compared with conventional instruction. A quantitative quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group was employed. The sample consisted of 38 students selected through purposive sampling, including 18 students in the experimental group and 20 students in the control group. Students completed procedure-text speaking tasks assessed primarily on accuracy and fluency. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test, Levene’s test, a homogeneity-of-regression-slopes test, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Both groups improved after instruction. The experimental group increased from a mean pretest score of 81.94 to 86.11, whereas the control group increased from 74.25 to 82.50. However, after controlling for initial speaking ability, the group effect was not statistically significant (p = .747), while the pretest significantly predicted posttest performance (p = .001). The findings indicate that TikTok did not outperform conventional instruction under the conditions of this study, although it still provided opportunities for repeated practice, self-evaluation, and feedback. TikTok is therefore more appropriately positioned as a supplementary medium supported by structured tasks and sustained teacher guidance.
