Abstract

Previous research found that extracts and fractions have quite good antioxidant activity because they contain secondary metabolites such as flavonoids. The extract and ethyl acetate fraction were made into a preparation in the form of a sunscreen gel which is expected to function as a gel that can ward off the negative effects of UVA and UVB from sunlight. This test used an in vitro method with UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The extract and fraction gels were initially tested for their antioxidant activity which showed that the gel with the active ingredient 96% ethanol extract had better antioxidant activity. The gel with the active ingredient ethanol extract was then tested for its stability during the storage period every 7 days until the 28th day of antioxidant activity was tested and the results showed that the gel with the active ingredient ethanol extract was astable even with the storage its antioxidant activity increased. The gel preparation was also determined for the percentage of pigmentation and the percentage of erythema to prove the gel's activity as a sunscreen. The results obtained were that the percentage of pigmentation decreased during storage where on day 0 the gel had activity as a sunblock but on day 28 the protection decreased to fast tanning. A different thing happened to the erythema percentage value where on day 0 the gel had activity as a fast tanning agent but on day 28 the protection increased to sunblock.

Abstract

Hypertriglyceridemia is a condition of elevated triglyceride levels in the blood. High triglyceride levels in the blood can increase the risk of heart disease. High triglyceride levels are caused by consumption of high-fat foods, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. Snake fruit is a fruit rich in antioxidants and plays a role in degenerative diseases. Snake fruit potential to development as an alternative in treatment. This study aims to test the antihypertriglyceremic activity in rats induced by a high-fat diet using a mixture of quail eggs and used cooking oil, and then the rats were treated with 10%, 20%, and 40% snake fruit extract. The data obtained showed that the administration of snake fruit extract could reduce the triglyceride levels of rats induced by a high-fat diet back to normal levels of <150mg/dL compared to the group induced by a high-fat diet and not treated (negative control). These results show that there is a difference between the group given snake fruit extract and the group not given snake fruit extract. Snake fruit extract contains phenolic and flavonoid metabolites that can lower triglyceride levels. Snake fruit extract can lower triglyceride levels in rats on a high-fat diet.

Abstract

Hyperuricemia is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated serum uric acid levels due to excessive production or impaired excretion. Conventional therapy using xanthine oxidase inhibitors such as allopurinol is effective but may cause adverse effects with prolonged use. This study aimed to evaluate the antihyperuricemic activity of kenikir (Cosmos caudatus Kunth.) leaf infusion in a potassium oxonate-induced hyperuricemic mouse model. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. Twenty-five male mice were randomly assigned into five groups (n=5): negative control (0.5% NaCMC), positive control (allopurinol 100 mg/kgBW), and three treatment groups receiving 10%, 15%, and 20% infusion. Hyperuricemia was induced using chicken liver juice and potassium oxonate (300 mg/kgBW). Each mouse received 0.5 mL orally. Blood uric acid levels were measured hourly for four hours using EasyTouch GCU. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal–Wallis test showed no significant difference among groups (p=0.220). However, descriptively, the 15% concentration demonstrated the highest percentage reduction (56.77%), followed by 20% (41.28%) and 10% (38.74%), compared with allopurinol (66.01%). These findings suggest that kenikir leaf infusion exhibits potential antihyperuricemic activity and supports further investigation with optimized dosing, larger sample size, and enzymatic validation. Abstract

Red guava fruit (Psidium guajava L.) is rich in minerals, one of which is magnesium, which has the potential as a natural active ingredient in cosmetic formulations. To ensure the effectiveness and stability of this compound, a study of various extraction methods is needed to determine the most optimal technique in producing the highest magnesium ion levels. This study aims to compare the magnesium ion levels in 70% ethanol extracts of red guava fruit extracted using maceration and ultrasonic methods. An experimental approach was used to determine which method is more effective in producing optimal magnesium levels. Identification of magnesium ions was carried out qualitatively using the titan yellow test and the NaOH test. Quantitatively, the determination of magnesium ion levels was analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 527.5 nm with the EBT color complex. To evaluate the effectiveness of the extraction method, a t-test was conducted on the magnesium content data to prove the significant effect of the different extraction techniques used. The results showed that both extracts contained magnesium ions. Analysis of magnesium ion levels in the ultrasonic method (260.47 mg/100 g) was proven to be higher than that in the maceration method (199.46 mg/100 g). The independent t-statistical test strengthens the research results by showing a significant difference between the two extraction methods (sig 0.000), so that ultrasonic is considered more effective in producing higher levels of magnesium ions.
