Abstract

Phycocyanin (PC)-producing cyanobacteria has shown many pharmaceutical applications, the main one is the antioxidant properties. Biosynthesis of PC-producing cyanobacteria is affected by many factors like nitrogen availability and light intensity during cultivation. This study aims to analyze the optimum concentration of nitrogen and light intensity during the cultivation of PC biosynthesis of marine cyanobacteria BTM 11 and identify its antioxidant properties This study was an experimental laboratory method and the PC level was determined through the variation of sodium nitrate (NaNO3) as a source of nitrogen dissolved in media and using different light intensities. The most optimum nitrogen and light intensity values of PC were measured by its antioxidant activity by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical capture method. Data was analyzed by one-way ANOVA and the post-hoc Duncan to see whether p<0.05. The result showed that there was a significant difference in the PC level that was cultivated with the variation of NaNO3 concentrations. The highest PC level was observed in media containing 525 mg of NaNO3 and the optimum light intensity of 4500 lux. The result of the antioxidant activity assay showed that the BTM11’s PC’s antioxidant activity had its IC50 at 91.89 μg/mL and the IC50 of ascorbic acid was 2.39 μg/mL

Abstract

Domestic waste is a global problem that is growing along with population growth and changes in consumption patterns. Domestic waste, if not handled properly, can cause environmental and health problems. Pineapple peel as a type of domestic waste has the potential to be used as an alternative pharmaceutical product because it still contains compounds in it, such as enzymes and bioactive compounds. Utilizing this waste not only reduces negative impacts on the environment, but also creates high-value products that are beneficial to society. Utilizing pineapple peel waste as a dishwashing soap product is the focus of our community service. The use of fruit peel waste represents a progressive step towards sustainability, small-scale home industry innovation and waste reduction which are increasingly important in efforts to preserve the environment and create products that are more beneficial to humans.

Abstract

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a daily home-based learning program implemented in Rumah Pintar, Pantai Lango. The program aimed to improve the academic skills of children aged 3-12 years who were experiencing learning difficulties. The intervention, conducted from July 12 to August 2, 2024, provided a structured learning environment outside of school hours. Participants were divided into groups based on their academic levels, addressing needs ranging from basic literacy and numeracy to English language learning. Results indicated that the program was successful in enhancing participants' abilities in reading, writing, and mathematics. However, challenges such as fluctuating daily attendance, attributed to a lack of parental awareness about the importance of home learning, were encountered. Despite these challenges, the program demonstrated the potential of non-formal, home-based learning initiatives in addressing the educational needs of children in underserved areas.
