Abstract

Karangsong is the largest fishing village in Indramayu. The Karangsong community, dominated by fishermen, has a distinctive linguistic identity reflected in the lexicon of maritime activities understood only by the local coastal people. Therefore, it is important to explore this lexicon as an effort to document the linguistic wealth of the Indramayu coastal community. This study aims to: (1) describe the linguistic situation of the Karangsong community; (2) identify the lexicon of fish names, fishing transportation, ship parts, fishing equipment, and fishing activities; and (3) explore the cultural portrait of the Karangsong community. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnolinguistic approach. The data consist of the linguistic activities of the Karangsong coastal community collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and questionnaires involving captains, boat builders, fishermen, and local residents. The results show that: (1) the Karangsong community has a wide variety of marine lexicon understood only by Indramayu’s coastal people; (2) this lexicon appears in the naming of fish, boats, boat parts, fishing tools, and activities; and (3) besides distinctive linguistic characteristics, the Karangsong community also holds beliefs, traditions, and folklore that shape their cultural identity.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how Indonesian social and cultural ideologies are linguistically represented in the Sahabatku Indonesia BIPA 2 textbook through a Critical Linguistics perspective. The ideological dimension in textbooks, particularly how social, moral, and national values are constructed through language choices, has rarely been studied in depth, necessitating an analysis capable of uncovering the role of language as a means of representing symbolic power in textbooks. This research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the Critical Linguistics analytical framework developed by Fowler. Data were obtained from reading texts, dialogues, and exercises in each learning unit and then analyzed at three levels: lexical choice, syntactic structure, and ideological discourse forms. The results show that this textbook consistently represents national values such as mutual cooperation, social harmony, cleanliness, modernity, and cultural nationalism. These values are conveyed through evaluative vocabulary choices, simple declarative and imperative sentences, and narratives that frame Indonesia as a developed, harmonious, and morally sound nation. This finding confirms that BIPA textbooks play a dual role: as a pedagogical tool and a cultural diplomacy tool that strengthens Indonesia’s image in the eyes of the international community.

Abstract

This study examines four Indonesian women’s travel narratives published between 2011 and 2014: The Naked Traveler One Year Round The World Trip (Trinity), The Jilbab Traveler (Asma Nadia), Perempuan Merah Putih (Nungky Irma Nurmala Pratikno), and London: Angel (Windry Ramadhina) through the concept of ambivalent agency by Ullah (2025) and Spivak’s (1994) notion of the double bind. This study reinterprets these contradictions not as conscious political strategies, but as symptoms of a complex, often complicit, negotiation with hegemonic power. The analysis reveals that agency in these texts is achieved through patterned accommodations to the very structures they critique: Trinity articulates agency through self-orientalizing mimicry that internalizes the tourist gaze; Nadia navigates the commodification of piety, transforming the jilbab into a neoliberal lifestyle brand; Nungky operates within the gendered constraints of State Ibuism, performing empowerment only within state-sanctioned nationalism; and Ramadhina utilizes intimate relationality to manage the anxiety of the unhomely. The study concludes that Indonesian women’s travel writing is less a site of pure resistance than a space of ambivalence, where the postcolonial subject must inhabit conflicting norms, simultaneously resisting and reproducing patriarchal and capitalist logics to achieve mobility.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the translation of women’s language features in Jane Austen’s novel Sense and Sensibility. The study focuses on understanding how the unique linguistic characteristics of female characters in the novel are rendered in the target language both by the official translator and by DeepL.The researchers are interested in cutting open the translation resulted by those two different translators. The study considers both the linguistic and cultural aspects of the translations, aiming to identify any potential challenges faced by translators in conveying the subtleties of women’s language features. The research used qualitative methods. Close reading and textual analysis were employed to identify and examine instances of women’s language features in the original text. Theoretically, the findings of this research shed light on the strategies employed by both the human translator and the DeepL in rendering women’s the language features. It is empirically proven that emphatic stress, lexical hedges/fillers, and intensifier are the most frequently used features in the novel. As for the translation strategies, the official human translator tends to employ a wider range of translation strategies than the DeepL.

Abstract

The suboptimal speaking proficiency among eleventh-grade students in Bekasi has prompted the development of novel instructional methods. Currently, only 36% of students can speak accurately and in accordance with linguistic rules. To address this, the present study explores the implementation of podcast-integrated lessons using the ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) framework and evaluates its effectiveness in enhancing student performance. Adopting an experimental approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design, the study involved 36 participants. Data were gathered through assessments conducted before and after the intervention, utilizing narrative material from the podcast “Jalan-jalan dan makan-makan di Palembang.” Analysis revealed a significant improvement, with mean scores rising from 48.39 in the pretest to 71.69 in the posttest (p = 0.000 via paired sample t-test). Furthermore, the N-Gain calculation yielded an average of 0.42, placing the improvement in the moderate category. These findings suggest that integrating podcasts with the ESA method not only effectively boosts speaking skills but also fosters greater student engagement and motivation, offering a valuable strategy for innovative language pedagogy at the high school level.

Using a descriptive qualitative methodology, this field research collects primary data through interviews and observations, supported by secondary data sourced from journals, online news, and books. Data analysis is conducted using a literary tourism approach. The results shows that Sitor Situmorang’s grave has great potential to transform into a prominent literary and cultural tourism destination. However, to realize this potential, a comprehensive and integrated development strategy is needed. This includes building strategic partnerships with all relevant parties. Development should be oriented towards the concept of Integrated Literary Tourism by creating literary routes, thematic tour packages, cross-destination collaboration, and literary festival. Thus, the grave will not only become a pilgrimage site, but also a dynamic center for cultural heritage preservation and a driver of the local economy, ultimately leading to a significant increase in tourist visits and length of stay.

Abstract

This study aims to (1) describe the multi-sector contribution to efforts to preserve the Javanese language in Wonosobo Regency, (2) identify inhibiting and supporting factors, and (3) describe strategies to increase the use of Javanese among the younger generation. This research method employs a qualitative approach, utilizing a case study design. Data collection through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation studies. The research location is Wonosobo Regency, with respondents from the Permadani Pawiyatan Institute, the Tourism Office, and UNSIQ. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis with the help of the NVivo application. This study shows that the preservation of the Javanese language in Wonosobo is the result of a multi-sector collaboration. Permadani plays a role in both the practical and cultural aspects. The local government provides regulatory support and resources, while UNSIQ strengthens the academic aspect. Inhibiting factors: the lack of binding regulations, low motivation of the younger generation, and the dominance of the Indonesian language. Supporting factors: the commitment of related institutions, local policy support, and the role of higher education. The synergy of the three sectors is expected to ensure that the Javanese language remains a proud part of the younger generation’s identity in Wonosobo.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the utterances of marginalized characters in Okky Madasari’s Pasung Jiwa and Kerumunan Terakhir as performative acts containing resistance to dominant social structures. This research is a qualitative descriptive type with a feminist approach. The research data consists of narrative excerpts, monologues, and dialogues containing performative utterances. Data collection was carried out through intensive reading. The analysis focused on how these utterances form performative acts in the character’s social context, and function as discursive practices that reproduce or challenge norms of identity and power. The results of the study show that language is not merely an expression of personal experience, but a form of performative act that contains resistance to dominant social structures. The language in the characters’ utterances can be used as a means to restructure the social order. Through the concept of linguistic performativity by Austin and Butler, the language spoken by the characters is present as a tool for negotiating meaning and power. Language becomes a space of resistance that challenges the boundaries of social norms, challenges the truth claims conveyed by the majority, and invites readers to see reality from other perspectives that tend to be marginalized.

Abstract

This study examined how the English for Nusantara textbooks represent identity and politeness in fostering students’ sociolinguistic competence across multiple grade levels. Using a qualitative case study design with content analysis, the study analyzed 93 identity-related words and phrases from all texts and 208 politeness-related utterances drawn exclusively from scripted dialogues. The findings indicate that the textbooks promote national identity through the incorporation of local names, places, foods, address forms, and other cultural references into English discourse. In terms of politeness, the textbooks contain 19 bald-on-record, 170 positive politeness, 18 negative politeness, and 1 off-record strategy, with positive politeness emerging as the dominant strategy that fosters solidarity, approval, and cooperation in peer interactions. Overall, the findings demonstrate that the English for Nusantara textbooks represent learners’ sociolinguistic competence through language identity and politeness. However, this representation remains partial and requires further development to more comprehensively capture uniquely Indonesian identities and a broader range of politeness strategies. This highlights the need for more comprehensive cultural content and more varied interactional contexts, encompassing both formal and informal interactions that reflect authentic language use.
