Abstract

In every agricultural business, farmers face the phenomenon of farming risk. Climate-related production risk, market risk, financial risk, and institutional risk are some of the dangers faced. This study aims to analyze the level of risk and risk mapping faced by farmers and its impact on shallot farming income. This study was conducted in the shallot center area in Wanasari District, Brebes Regency, Central Java, Indonesia from April to May 2023. The survey was conducted using semi-structured interviews and questionnaires on the level of shallot farming risk and factors that influence farmers' income. The analysis was carried out using risk mapping and multiple regression techniques. The results of the study showed that the production risk, market risk, and financial risk of shallot farmers in the study area were included in the high category, while institutional risk was included in the moderate group. The shallots produced per hectare reached 12.76 tons. The factors that influence shallot farming income are land area, productivity, total costs and shallot farmers' risk awareness. Meanwhile, the price of shallots and the level of risk did not significantly affect shallot farming income.

Abstract

Rice farming is closely related to climate and weather in the business process, especially the on-farm process in the crop area. Climate risk in rice farming is closely related to the occurrence of floods, droughts, and attacks of Plant Disturbing Organisms (OPT). Therefore, it is necessary to overcome uncertainty to protect farmers and their farms, namely agricultural insurance. Agricultural insurance shows partiality to farmers to anticipate the risk of farming losses. Sragen Regency is one of the rice production centers in Central Java Province, so its farms need to be protected from risks through Rice Farming Insurance (AUTP). The purpose of this study is to analyze farmers' behavior in conducting rice farming through their risk preferences in Sragen Regency. The research was conducted using the survey method. Data were collected by interview technique using questionnaires. The number of samples taken from 100 rice farmers in Sragen Regency from three representative Sub-districts with specific criteria, namely Tanon Sub-district, Sidoharjo Sub-district, and Sambirejo Sub-district. The population in this study are rice farmers who participated in the Rice Farming Insurance (AUTP) program from 2018 to 2020. Data analysis uses the Multiple Price List (MPL) approach. Some previous studies analysing farmers' willingness to pay premiums in the AUTP programme have not included farmers' risk preference factors in the analysis. In addition, there is no research that discusses farmers' willingness to pay for AUTP premiums in Sragen Regency. Therefore, this research is expected to be a literature study in formulating strategies related to the implementation of the AUTP programme in the future by considering farmers' risk preferences, especially in Sragen Regency. The results showed that rice farmers in Sragen Regency have a very risk-averse risk preference, which means that they are risk-averse individuals when farming. Therefore, the Rice Farming Insurance (AUTP) program can be utilized by farmers as a form of risk mitigation implementation in their farming operations.

Abstract

The concept of urban agriculture can overcome the problem of shrinking productive agricultural land. Urban agriculture can run successfully in communities that have good social capital. This study aimed to investigate the role of social capital in urban farming success within the Dahlia Farmer Group. Conducted from December to January 2024. This research uses the methods analysis technique used is quantitative and statistical in the form of multiple linear regression. This research shows that norms have an important role in supporting the success of urban agriculture by establishing SOPs for members. The contribution of norms is essential because they create the basis for effective coordination within the group and ensure the achievement of common goals. Trust and networks have proven to be less influential because urban farming relies more on management and knowledge than on interpersonal relationships. The differences in previous studies bring newness (gap) in the research to be conducted. This study will contribute new understanding of the relationship between social capital and urban agriculture in farmer groups in urban areas, namely the Dahlia Farmer Group. Suggestions for the Dahlia Farmers Group are to prioritize strengthening norms that support urban agriculture, such as strengthening digital networks, developing mentorship, organizing social activities, establishing partnerships with external parties, and implementing a reward system.

Abstract

Strawberries, which are closely associated with the Ciwidey District in West Java, pass through a supply chain that includes numerous stakeholders, from farmers to retailers. This complex chain results in significant price disparities and lowers farmers' profits. This study aims to analyse the value chain and price disparity of strawberry commodities in Ciwidey District, Bandung Regency, West Java. The value chain analysis method is used to understand and improve the way a product or service generates value, and Hayami's analysis is used to calculate the added value for each actor in this supply chain. Based on the results of the analysis, the value chain of strawberry commodities in Ciwidey District obtained parties/actors that play a role in this supply chain, such as farmers, who act as producers of the strawberry cultivation process. Small collectors who collect the strawberry harvest directly from the farmers do the sorting and grading and sell it to large collectors. Large collectors act as traders who collect the strawberry harvest and distribute the sales more widely. Retailers act as traders who sell strawberries to consumers. The added value obtained by farmers is Rp 300.01/kg, small collectors Rp 6,345.67/kg, large collectors Rp 14,799.29/kg, and retailers Rp 18,224.8/kg. In this strawberry commodity value chain, the disparity value from the farmer to the consumer level is Rp 63,550/kg. The implications of this study provide insight into market dynamics and offer a basis for improvements and interventions that can help all parties, especially in improving the economic conditions of farmers. The strawberry supply chain's complexity impacts various actors differently. Farmers suffer reduced profits due to price disparities, while retailers gain from price markups. Consumers experience price variability. This study highlights the need for interventions to streamline the supply chain, reduce intermediaries, and improve farmers' economic conditions.

Abstract

Farmer competence is the ability of farmers to think, behave, and act in managing farming businesses. The competence can involve various stakeholders (actors) and types of farmers’ competencies. Therefore, this study investigates the role of stakeholders in farmers' competencies and assesses the rank of farmers’ competencies in Magelang Regency (highland) and Pati Regency (lowland). Both regions have a significant number of millennial farmers in Central Java Province. The sample for this study was 12 people (institutions) selected using purposive sampling. They provided their perceptions of farmer competencies through in-depth interviews. The interviews were conducted during July–August 2023. MACTOR and AHP methods were applied to measure the stakeholders’ role and rank the types of farmer competencies. The findings reveal that all actors agreed on developing farmer competencies through collaboration and business partnerships. Some stakeholders have the strongest level of convergence, consisting of local government agricultural agencies, local government industry agencies, farmer communities, and the banking industries. In contrast, the strongest divergence occurs with sellers of agricultural products and local public figures. In addition, the ranking or priority of farmer competencies from the top is innovative, communication, and entrepreneurial competencies. Policy implications emphasize increasing the level of collaboration and partnership between agricultural business stakeholders and local governments to enhance and guarantee the quality of farmer competencies.

Abstract

The existence of SiLPA (Excess Budget Calculation) in village financial management is an abstract thing that can indicate a surplus village financial condition but also indicates that the absorption of budget could be more optimal. Being the region in Bali Province with the lowest SiLPA ratio in 2018 and 2019, Tabanan Regency has demonstrated budget management capabilities despite the large number of villages in its area. The impact of village financial management also affects the development of village agriculture, which is the primary employment in Tabanan, the title of Bali's main rice barn. This study examined the relationship and influence of village revenue and expenditure on SiLPA and the causes of SiLPA in Tabanan Regency. This research is confirmatory research with GSCA analysis that used to analyze the relationship and influence of village income and expenditure on SiLPA in Tabanan Regency. Meanwhile, qualitative descriptive analysis is used to examine the causes of SiLPA in Tabanan Regency. The results show that P1, P3, and B5 matter positively affect S. Meanwhile, P2 and B1 have a negative effect on S. The causes of SiLPA are dominated by force majeure and planning.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and evaluate the superior regional products of Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir (PALI) Regency, South Sumatera, using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The primary problem addressed is the need for a structured approach to prioritize regional products based on key criteria. The study evaluates five products: Sagarurung, Jengkol Chips, Aluminum Crafts, Bumi Ayu Temple, and Batik PALI, across criteria including economic contribution, price, market potential, socio-cultural value, and product uniqueness. The AHP method was used to determine the weight of each criterion, revealing that economic contribution was the most significant (0.262), followed by price (0.236). The TOPSIS method then ranked Sagarurung as the highest-performing product with a preference value of 0.823, indicating its strong economic impact and market potential. Batik PALI followed with a preference value of 0.551, excelling in uniqueness and socio-cultural value. The results suggest that while Sagarurung and Batik PALI are the leading products, others like Aluminum Crafts, Jengkol Chips, and Bumi Ayu Temple require targeted improvements to enhance their competitiveness. The study concludes by recommending focused strategies to optimize the development of these products, leveraging their strengths and addressing identified weaknesses.

Abstract

Rojolele rice is a superior commodity from Klaten Regency, known for its premium quality and distinctive flavor. Rojolele can be grown both organically and conventionally. Organic farming systems have many advantages, especially in terms of income and profitability; however, most farmers still practice conventional methods. The objectives of this study were: (1) to compare the income and profit of organic and conventional rojolele rice farming, and (2) to determine the factors that affect the income and profit of rojolele rice farming in Klaten Regency. This study used a survey method involving 20 organic farmers and 47 conventional farmers. The analytical method employed is an income and profit analysis, as well as multiple regression analysis. The results of the study showed that the income from organic rojolele rice farming is Rp 30,988,293 per hectare over two growing seasons, which is higher compared to conventional farming (Rp 20,463,484). Meanwhile, the profit for organic farmers is Rp 18,686,701 and for conventional farmers it is Rp 14,106,446. This indicates that organic rojolele rice farming is more profitable than conventional. Statistically, organic and conventional rojolele rice farming shows significant differences in income, though not in profit value. The factors significantly affecting income for organic farmers are land area, while in conventional farming, they are the price of chemical pesticides and land area. Furthermore, the factor influencing the profit of rojolele farmers, both organic and conventional, is solely the land area. Therefore, it may be considered to expand the development of organic rice farming, particularly rojolele rice, in Klaten Regency.
