Abstract

Family communication patterns are represented in the cartoon “Keluarga Pak Somat” Episode 41, along with their impact on the formation of children's personality. This local cartoon serves as a significant object of study as it reflects the realities of family life within Indonesian society. This research employs a qualitative approach using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis method to identify the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings of the communication patterns depicted. The findings indicate that the cartoon portrays democratic, permissive, and authoritarian communication patterns in the relationships among family members and their influence on character development in children. The cartoon implicitly conveys an educational message about the importance of healthy and positive family communication in shaping a child’s personality.

Abstract

The use of face filters on social media has become part of a self-presentation strategy, especially in the context of finding a partner. This study investigates the motives, perceptions and impact of women’s use of face filters in building online relationships. The method used is a qualitative approach with in-depth interview techniques with four informants, consisting of two unmarried women and two widows. The results of the study indicate that the reasons for using filters are related to the desire to appear more attractive, to increase self-confidence and as a form of self-expression. The informants’ perceptions of filters are divided into two views: as a form of manipulation and as a way to show the best version of themselves. In addition, it was found that unmarried women showed a greater tendency to rely on filters than widows.

Abstract

Stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) remain a major obstacle to achieving an optimal quality of life, especially in terms of self-disclosure and access to social support. In the midst of the rapid development of digital technology, social media has emerged as a potential online space that can be utilized by PLWHA to express their identity and build social support networks. This study aims to analyze the role of social media in supporting the self-disclosure of PLWHA and its contribution in forming a supportive online community. The method used is a literature review with a descriptive analysis approach that examines various academic studies from the last 5 years published from 2019 to 2024 through databases such as PubMed, JMIR, Springer, PMC and Google Scholar. The results show that social media provides a safe space for PLWHA to manage their identity narratives, increase self-confidence, and obtain validation and emotional support from online communities. However, the dilemma between the need for openness and the risk of stigma and invasion of privacy remains a significant challenge. This study recommends that future research emphasize qualitative exploration of PLHIV's direct experiences, as well as the development of inclusive and safe digital platform policies and designs to support the sustainability of empowering self-disclosure.

Abstract

The phenomenon of identity-based bullying in the multicultural educational environment of Pematangsiantar City reflects a complex issue that extends beyond individual behavior and is closely linked to the failure of educational institutions to substantively recognize student identity diversity. This study aims to explore how a philosophical approach to identity recognition can be applied as a more fundamental and sustainable bullying mitigation strategy. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with students, teachers, and educational staff, complemented by participant observations and analysis of school policy documents. Data analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman’s techniques, which include data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification through credibility, dependability, transferability, and confirmability tests. The findings reveal that identity recognition remains primarily administrative, often neglecting psychosocial dimensions, thereby fostering identity-based bullying in the form of social exclusion, verbal bullying, and symbolic domination by majority groups. The limited integration of educational philosophy into learning processes further amplifies identity homogenization within classrooms. In conclusion, the philosophical approach to identity recognition offers a strategic contribution to strengthening inclusive education based on social justice, capable of sustainably mitigating bullying in multicultural educational settings.

Abstract

Tanjungpinang is one of 100 cities designated as Smart City pilot cities by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. To support this initiative, Tanjungpinang City Government then developed Tanjungpinang Smart City Masterplan, which is directly supervised by the Ministry of Communication and Information. One of the strategies that the Tanjungpinang City Government must develop as part of this masterplan is a Smart Branding strategy that focuses on the image and brand of Tanjungpinang City. This research evaluates the development of Tanjungpinang City's Smart Branding strategy based on three core values: (1) Emotional, (2) Functional, and (3) Smartness according to the Grebosz-Krawczyk (2021) framework. The research is qualitative in nature, using a case study approach conducted in Tanjungpinang City, with data collection through interviews, observations, and literature reviews. After the data was collected, it was analyzed following the processes of reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the Smart Branding strategy for the city of Tanjungpinang follows three main strategies, namely (1) Smart Tourism & Seaport, (2) Tanjungpinang Investment Lounge, and (3) Smart Landmark, which are collectively outlined into 17 work programs. In terms of emotional value, cultural and thematic tourism activities are conducted to strengthen the city's image; however, the lack of direct community involvement is considered a possible improvement. In terms of functional value, the work programs implemented by the City Government demonstrate consideration and objectives to provide easy access to services for tourists and investors; however, further consideration is needed to accommodate the impact of activities on socio-environmental aspects. The value of intelligence itself can be found in the development of software such as e-Tourism and the OSS portal, as well as Green Building initiatives. In its development, the Tanjungpinang City Government must ensure that the utilization of ICT, interoperability, innovation, and sustainability can be achieved. This study ultimately identified weaknesses, namely a top-down approach and minimal community participation, which could potentially reduce community acceptance of the brand and lead to rejection. Therefore, this study recommends that the Tanjungpinang City Government strengthen community participation mechanisms, realign the use and application of technology with local needs, and ensure the appropriateness of economic, social, and environmental objectives to ensure the strength of Tanjungpinang City's Smart Branding identity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the adaptation of digital campaigns carried out by the Instagram account @millenial_hiro in attracting the swipe generation in Medan City, through the approach of Islamic political communication and symbolic interactionism theory. The swipe generation, as a representation of productive-age youth, shows characteristics of critical, fast, and responsive information consumption to social media. The @millenial_hiro campaign strategy does not only use digital media to convey political programs, but also builds an interaction space based on the values of honesty, trustworthiness, justice, and benefit. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, observation techniques, documentation, and content analysis based on the Klaus Krippendorff model. The findings show that various forms of content such as online game tournaments, educational microblogs, narrative talk, flow-talk, social experiments, and parody videos are used to create emotional resonance, strengthen political involvement, and form collective meanings rooted in Islamic values. Symbolic interactionism theory is used to read how digital symbols in the campaign build shared political meanings between candidates and youth. This study offers novelty by combining the perspectives of Islamic communication and symbolic interactionism in understanding the dynamics of digital political campaigns. The results of the study indicate that socio-political da'wah in the new media era can run effectively through a creative approach based on Islamic values, building a participatory, just, and civilized political culture among the younger generation. This study also opens up space for further studies on the transformation of Islamic political communication in the context of the development of digital technology.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of Learning Management System (LMS)-based training and career development on employee competence at PT. Perkebunan Nusantara IV Regional II Medan. The research addresses the ongoing challenge of improving employee competence despite the implementation of LMS and career development programs. A quantitative research design was used, and data were collected through structured questionnaires distributed to 123 employees. Multiple linear regression analysis was applied to examine the relationships among variables. The findings reveal that LMS-based training has a significant and dominant effect on employee competence, with greater impact than career development programs. The LMS provides flexibility and accessibility that enhance learning engagement, yet limitations remain, such as the lack of contextual content and alignment with job-specific needs. Career development programs also positively affect competence but show uneven access across employee groups, limiting their full impact. The study concludes that a structured, integrated approach combining LMS training with equitable career development pathways is essential to maximize employee competence. The research highlights the need for organizations to align LMS content with workplace requirements and develop inclusive career strategies. These findings contribute to the human resource development field by offering practical insights for enhancing digital learning systems and career growth in the plantation sector.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of a simulation learning model assisted by film media on the ability of Grade XI students at SMA Swasta Pelita Pematangsiantar to demonstrate drama scripts. The background of this research lies in the low level of student participation and skills in performing drama scripts, which is attributed to a lack of interest, inadequate training, and the use of inappropriate learning models. This research employs a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a pre-test and post-test design applied to two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The research instrument consists of essay tests, which were analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, and paired sample t-tests through the SPSS application. The results show that the data are normally distributed and homogeneous, and there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test mean scores in the experimental group (from 66.93 to 82.80) compared to the control group (from 49.86 to 76.89). These findings indicate that the implementation of the simulation model assisted by film media is effective in improving students’ ability to perform drama scripts. Therefore, this model can be recommended as an alternative learning strategy to enhance students’ speaking skills and literary appreciation in an active, creative, and contextual manner.
