Abstract

Background: Vitamin D deficiency affects about 50% of people worldwide and 95% of Indonesian women of childbearing age. Micronutrient intake can impact serum 25(OH)D levels. Obesity is linked to serum 25(OH)D levels and micronutrients like zinc, magnesium, and vitamin D consumption. Objectives: This study aims to determine the differences in serum levels of 25(OH)D, vitamin D, magnesium, and zinc intakes in obese and normal students at the Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University, Padang. Methods: This research was observational with a comparative case-control design at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Laboratory, Andalas University, from November 2021 to July 2022. Systematic random sampling was used to select the sample, obtaining 64 female students with obesity and normal nutritional status. Data were collected by blood sampling and questionnaires. Bivariate analysis used an independent t-test. Results: The results showed the mean serum levels of 25(OH)D, vitamin D, magnesium, and zinc intakes in the obese group were 10.98 ± 2,12 ng/mL; 5.07 ± 1,47 mcg; 166.04 ± 65.27 mcg and 6.88 ± 2.73 mcg, while the mean in the standard group were 13.94 ± 4.57 ng/mL; 5.92 ± 1.77 mcg; 205.88 ± 92.84 mcg; and 7.62 ± 2.67 mcg. The mean serum levels were 25(OH)D, vitamin D, magnesium, and zinc intakes were lower in the obese group (p-value = 0.001; 0.040; 0.044; 0.280). Conclusions: There are significant differences in serum levels of 25(OH)D, vitamin D, and magnesium in female students with obese and normal nutritional status. There is no significant difference in zinc intake in female students with obese and normal nutritional status.

Abstract

Background: Identification of nutritional status upon their admission as well as influencing factors related to changes in nutritional status during hospital treatment need to be done to prevent the risk of worsening of the patient's clinical outcomes. Objectives: This study aimed to find out the nutritional status of hospitalized elderly patients at hospital admission using the Mini Nutrition Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) screening tool. Methods: This study was an observational design with a cross sectional design and conducted at dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta Hospital from September-November 2021. Basic characteristic data is gathered, nutritional screening is performed using MNA-SF, and nutritional status is measured using weight, height, Mid-Upper Arm Circumferences (MUAC), calf circumference, Hand Grip Strength (HGS), total fat percentage, visceral fat, muscle mass and hemoglobin. Results: A total of 86 elderly patients, ranging in age from 60 to 80 years, were recently admitted to the hospital. The results showed the prevalence of malnutrition in the hospitalized elderly was 46.5%. According to the assessment results, malnourished elderly patients had statistically significant lower Body Mass Index (BMI) (19.4±3.1), total fat levels (20.0±10.9), visceral fat levels (4.4±4.6), muscle mass (34.4±7.7), MUAC (22.6±3.4), calf circumference (27.2±6.7) dan hemoglobin (10.7±3.2) (p<0.05). Conclusions: According to MNA-SF, half of the elderly patients in hospitals were malnourished at hospital admission. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the nutritional state of elderly patients as soon as they are admitted and to implement the proper nutritional therapy in order to reduce its negative effects on the patients and healthcare system.

Abstract

Background: Humans require iodine as a micronutrient; a deficit in this mineral lowers IQ. Seaweed (E. cottonii) is a non-salt source of iodine. You can add E. cottonii flour to food items like nuggets. Aside from that, Vanname Shrimp are a high-protein fishery product that can be utilized as a base for nuggets. Therefore, to prevent iodine deficit, Vanname Shrimp nuggets supplemented with E. cottonii flour can be developed as a substitute food. Objectives: Fortification of E. cottonii flour in making Vanname Shrimp nuggets as an effort to increase the iodine content. Methods: Three replications of a non-factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) were used in the study. The fisheries products laboratory at Brawijaya University's Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) was the site of the research. There were four additions of E. cottonii flour: 0%, 7.5%, 10%, and 12.5%. Iodine content is the parameter for chemical testing; elasticity is the parameter for physical testing; and color, scent, taste, and texture are the criteria for organoleptic testing (the hedonic approach for determining the optimal treatment utilizing the de Garmo and proximal testing). Results: The study found that adding different quantities of E. cottonii flour fortification significantly altered the iodine content and flexibility of Vanname Shrimp nuggets. E. cottonii flour is optimally fortified at a level of 7.5% treatment, with iodine content of 6.17 mcg/g, elasticity of 6.65 N, carbohydrate content of 77.04%, protein content of 7.78%, fat content of 3.67%, water content of 9.85%, and ash content of 1.66%. Conclusions: In order to prevent and treat iodine deficiency, the Vanname Shrimp nugget product fortified with E. cottonii flour should be further developed as a food option.

Abstract

Background: Bilih fish (mystacoleucus padangensis bleeker) is a local food source in West Sumatra with the potential to be one of the processed food products that can contribute to reducing stunting. Bilih fish contains complete nutrients for the growth and development of toddlers. Objectives: This research aims to (1) develop the formulas of buffalo milk-based nuggets with the addition of bilih fish, (2) select the best nugget formula based on an organoleptic test, and (3) analyse the nutritional content through tests (proximate, zinc, and calcium) in the formulas of buffalo milk-based nuggets with the addition of bilih fish as supplementary food for the growth and development of children aged 1-3 years (toddlers). Methods: The research design employed was experimental studies. The experimental design for the nugget formula was a Completely Randomised Design (CRD). The nugget formula was created with four treatment levels: F0 = standard formula (buffalo milk nugget + 0 g bilih fish), F1 (buffalo milk nugget + 10 g bilih fish), F2 (buffalo milk nugget + 30 g bilih fish), and F3 (buffalo milk nugget + 50 g bilih fish). The organoleptic test was conducted with 30 semi-trained panelists and 2 replications. The data collected were analysed by applying the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: The best formula was F1, indicated by a bright yellow colour, savoury taste, aromatic smell, and tender texture. There were no significant differences among F0, F1, F2, and F3. The nutritional analysis results for F1 include water (46.90%), ash (2.32%), protein (11.77%), fat (7.60%), calcium (5.52 mg), and zinc (16.63 mg) per 100 g of nuggets. Conclusions: The best formula is F1 (buffalo milk nugget + 10 g bilih fish).

Abstract

Background: Hypercholesterolemia is a state of total blood cholesterol levels transported by LDL exceeding normal limits. As a result, it can clog blood vessels, and this condition is a risk factor for CHD. Alternative medicine includes flavonoids in Averrhoa bilimbi (belimbing wuluh) known to reduce cholesterol and LDL levels, and curcumin in turmeric known to reduce fat absorption and increase fat excretion. Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the combined effect of bilimbi fruit and turmeric extracts on LDL levels. Methods: This experimental research used post-test only with a control group design involving male Wistar rats divided into 6 (six) random groups. Group KN (standard feed, aquadest for 28 days), K- (high-fat feed for 14 days, followed by standard feed and aquadest), K+ (high-fat feed for 14 days, followed by standard feed, aquadest, and simvastatin 0.18mg/200 g BW/day), P1 (high-fat feed for 14 days, followed by standard feed, aquadest and extracts of bilimbi fruit and turmeric extract at a dose of 240: 270 mg/200 g BW/day), P2 (high-fat diet for 14 days, followed by standard feed, distilled water and bilimbi fruit and turmeric extract at a dose of 360: 175 mg/200 g BW/day), P3 (high-fat diet for 14 days, followed by standard feed, distilled water and extracts of bilimbi fruit and turmeric at a dose of 120: 405 mg/200 g BW/day). The determination of LDL levels was done through a direct method using a spectrophotometer with a wavelength of 550 nm. Results: The mean LDL levels were KN (53.60 ± 10.69) mg/dL, K- (193.40 ± 16.86) mg/dL, K+ (100.20 ± 42.48) mg/dL, P1 (118.00 ± 64.71) mg/dL, P2 (104.00 ± 45.28) mg/dL, P3 (78.00 ± 4.69) mg/dL. The data received was analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Then, the results obtained differences in LDL levels between various groups (p<0.001). Subsequently, it was continued with the Mann-Whitney test on KN compared to K-, K+, P1, P2, P3 indicating p=0.009. As a result, it was found a significant difference in LDL levels between KN and K-, K+, P1, P2, and P3. Conclusions: This research concludes that providing a mixture of bilimbi fruit extract and turmeric extract can reduce LDL levels.

Abstract

Background: Nutritional support is a globally acknowledged standard of care for critically ill patients, forming an integral component of clinical therapy in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) to enhance overall clinical outcomes. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the impact of enteral nutritional support on clinical outcomes in ICU patients. Methods: This research adopted a systematic review approach, focusing on Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) studies conducted between 2010 and 2020. The review adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. The clinical outcomes studied included length of stay in the hospital, length of stay in the ICU, and mortality. Discussion: Among 897 reviewed articles, only 6 articles were relevant. The study respondents were ICU in patients who received enteral formula, both in the control and intervention groups. The intervention group received an enteral formula featuring modified energy (normocaloric and high protein) and nutrients (enriched with pectin and immunse-modulating nutrients). Nutritional support in the form of enteral nutrition has varying effects on the length of hospitalization, ICU, and mortality. Conclusions: No significant difference was observed in ICU and hospital stays between patients receiving standard enteral/hypocaloric/high protein nutrition and those receiving enteral nutrition enriched with pectin or immune-modulating nutrients. However, patients receiving enteral nutrition with immune-modulating nutrients experienced a reduced length of hospitalization. The administration of immune-modulating nutrients was associated with an increased risk of mortality at 60 and 28 days in critically ill patients.

Abstract

Background: In Indonesia, the prevalence of hypertension was found to increase from 25.8% (2013) to 34.1% (2018). In additon, patients with this medical condition are generally required to adhere to lifelong anti-hypertensive drugs for blood pressure control. However, recent studies have suggested the use of tea containing active compounds Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which can lower blood pressure. Objectives: This study aimed to provide an overview of active compounds in tea with the potential to lower blood pressure. Methods: The data used were obtained from sources related to randomized controlled clinical trials searched through the Pubmed page in the 2017-2022 period, with various keywords such as tea, blood pressure, and hypertension. Discussions: Out of 35 studies reviewed, a total of 9 were obtained from the literature search. The results showed that EGCG in capsule form with a dose range of 75-300 mg could reduce blood pressure significantly, as observed in studies with capsules containing anthocyanins and polyphenols. Although 4 studies used tea beverages as intervention materials, there was no significant decrease in blood pressure. Furthermore, 2 studies showed a significant variation due to differences in the levels of active compounds and the presence of caffeine in tea, which affected blood pressure measurements. Conclusions: The use of active compounds in tea, particularly EGCG, in recent clinical trials on blood pressure regulation has shown a significant reduction in hypertension. Therefore, exploiting the potential of EGCG in a larger sample size could serve as a promising avenue for future studies.

Abstract

Background: Pregnant women experiencing chronic energy deficiency are at risk of giving birth to low birth weight and premature (stunted) babies. Objectives: In an effort to prevent stunting, the study investigates the effects of a 1:1:1 ratio of Moringa oleifera, Cyclea barbata, and Centella asiatica leaf extract on fetal growth and blood protein levels. Methods: This research used a laboratory experimental approach with 25 adult female Mus musculus Balb/C mice as a model of malnourished pregnancy, was divided into 5 groups: pre-test, positive control, negative control, placebo and test group. Moringa oleifera, Cyclea barbata, and Centella asiatica leaf extracts are administered to the test group and positive control in 1:1:1 ratio. Results: The study results indicated that in pregnant mice without malnutrition receiving a mixture of Moringa oleifera, Cyclea barbata, and Centella asiatica leaf extracts, the average fetal body length was 9.7% higher and their weight was 7.4% heavier than pregnant mice with experiencing chronic energy deficiency. Conclusions: The administration of Moringa oleifera, Cyclea barbata, and Centella asiatica leaf extract can contribute to improving fetal development and blood protein levels. However, its effectiveness is more pronounced in normal pregnancies than in pregnancies with chronic energy deficiency as it can prevent stunting.

Abstract

Background: Consumption of beverages and processed foods with high fructose content has increased recently. This condition increases the risk of metabolic syndrome, which include insulin resistance, impaired lipid profile, and elevated blood pressure. Moringa leaves (Moringa Oleifera), with their bioactive compounds that function as antioxidants, are known to improve fat metabolism and blood glucose. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of Moringa Oleifera leaf powder and quercetin in controlling metabolic syndrome conditions by improving lipid profiles and aortic thickness in prediabetes mellitus (pre DM). Methods: This experimental research used a post-test-only control group design approach. A total of 35 male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups such as group K0 (standard feed), E1 (66% fructose probe for 16 weeks), E2 (66% fructose probe for 12 weeks), E3 (66% fructose probe + quercetin 50 mg/kgBW), and E4 (66% fructose probe + Moringa leaf powder 500 mg/kgBW). The examination method for lipid profiles involved serum extraction and enzymatic tests, weighing for white fat tissue mass, while the aorta was examined using a light microscope and histological image analysis. Data analysis used the One-Way ANOVA test. Results: This research showed there are no difference in triglycerides, Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and white adipose tissue significantly between the treatment groups. Level of High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, total cholesterol, and aortic thickness between the treatment groups are significant differences, with the best results sequentially in groups E2, E1, and K0. Conclusions: The administration of Moringa leaf powder for 4 weeks showed improvements in lipid profiles and aortic thickness in prediabetes mellitus conditions.

Abstract

Background: Purple sweet potato productivity in Indonesia is notably high, particularly in Bondowoso at 213.84 quintals/ha. This variant of sweet potato is rich in beta-carotene, with a content of 4237 µg/100 g, known for its ability to protect cells from free radicals and reduce the risk of diabetes mellitus. Notably, Indonesia ranks third globally in the prevalence of prediabetes, affecting 27.7 million people. In 2022, in Tapen District, Bondowoso, the prevalence of prediabetes, based on Tapen Health Center data, was recorded at 12.36%. Objectives: Analyzing betacarotene, total sugar, and organoleptic propeties of purple sweet potato jam as a prediabetes distraction food. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with a post-test-only control group was employed. The research involved producing purple sweet potato jam with varying ratios of cassava sugar and purple sweet potato (X0: 0% cassava sugar; 100% purple sweet potato; X1: 15% cassava sugar; 85% purple sweet potato; X2: 30% cassava sugar; 70% purple sweet potato; X3: 45% cassava sugar; 55% purple sweet potato). Analysis included determining betacarotene content using the UV-Visible Spectrophotometry method, total sugar using the Luff Schoorl method, and organoleptic evaluation through the hedonic test method. Data were subjected to statistical analysis using the One-Way ANOVA test for betacarotene and total sugar levels, followed by Duncan's post-hoc test. Organoleptic test data were analyzed using the Kruskall Wallis test and Dunn's post-hoc test. Results: The average betacarotene content in treatments X0, X1, X2, and X3 were 4230.3 µg/100 g; 3464 µg/100 g; 2955.6 µg/100 g; and 2257.3 µg/100 g, respectively. Total sugar content averages for treatments X0, X1, X2, and X3 were 2.2%; 13.7%; 27.5%; and 39.2%, respectively. The panelists' preference indicated that sample X3 (45% cassava sugar and 55% purple sweet potato) was the most favored jam. Conclusions: Significant differences were observed in beta-carotene, total sugar, and organoleptic levels of purple sweet potato jam, suggesting that the variation in purple sweet potato and cassava sugar ratios influenced the beta-carotene and total sugar levels in the jam.
