Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the impact of using the Brainingcamp application in improving the understanding of arithmetic concepts among fourth-grade students at Islamic Leader School in Tasikmalaya City through a constructivist approach. The research employs a case study approach with qualitative descriptive design, involving 22 students as research subjects during the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through classroom observations, written tests (pre-test and post-test), and interviews with students and teachers. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis, while quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results show a significant improvement in students’ average scores after using Brainingcamp, with increases of 17.6% in addition, 18.8% in subtraction, 24.3% in multiplication, and 30.8% in division. Observations and interviews also reveal that students became more active, motivated, and collaborative during the learning process. The use of virtual manipulatives supports the principles of constructivism, aligning with Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s theories by providing opportunities for students to build their own understanding through visual exploration and social interaction. Based on these findings, Brainingcamp proves effective in enhancing both conceptual understanding of arithmetic and student engagement, although this study has limitations in terms of sample size, duration, and generalizability. Therefore, it is recommended to replicate the study with a larger and more diverse population and extend the duration of implementation in future research.

Abstract

Connection ability is one of the mathematical skills standards that students must possess. Mathematical connection ability is the capability to relate mathematics to other fields of study as well as to mathematics itself. In the mathematics instruction for Class X MP 2, based on the results of an initial assessment, it was found that only 20% of students had a sufficiently good connection ability, while the remaining 80% lacked this skill. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using the discovery learning model to improve the mathematical connection ability of Class X students at SMK Negeri 5 Madiun in exponent material. The study uses a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, conducted over two cycles. The subjects of the study were 31 students from Class X MP 2 at SMK Negeri 5 Madiun. The study was conducted through several stages in each cycle, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The results of this study showed an increase in students' mathematical connection abilities through the application of the discovery learning model. Learning using the discovery learning model in mathematics for Class X MP 2 at SMK Negeri 5 Madiun can enhance students' mathematical connection abilities from 46.67% in the pre-cycle, 68.33% in Cycle I, to 78.3% in Cycle II.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the critical thinking skills of prospective elementary school teachers in solving ethnomathematics-based spatial geometry problems. Critical thinking skills are essential skills for prospective teachers in facing the challenges of modern education. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with four final year students of the PGSD Study Program, UN PGRI Kediri as subjects who are classified into two categories, namely high and low ability. Data were collected through problem-solving tests and interviews based on Ennis' critical thinking indicators, which include simple explanations, basic skills, strategies and tactics, conclusions, and further explanations. The results showed that low-ability subjects were only able to achieve three of the five critical thinking indicators, namely providing simple explanations, building basic skills, and drawing conclusions. Meanwhile, high-ability subjects were able to meet all critical thinking indicators. This study confirms that critical thinking skills can be developed through ethnomathematics-based problem presentation, which links mathematical concepts to local culture.
