Abstract

The Ngaruwat tradition in Cimalingping Village, Sindangsari Subdistrict, Kasomalang District, Subang Regency, represents the community’s expression of gratitude to God, nature, and their ancestors for the abundance of agricultural produce and social harmony. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a symbolic approach to reveal the meanings of local wisdom values embedded in the Ngaruwat ritual. The findings indicate that Ngaruwat serves not merely as a ritual to ward off misfortune but also as an embodiment of spirituality, mutual cooperation (gotong royong), and ecological awareness among the people. These values reflect social and religious ethics that are relevant to be integrated into character education in elementary schools through an ethnopedagogical approach. The integration of values such as gratitude, environmental care, responsibility, and solidarity into culture-based learning modules can foster religious character, environmental awareness, and love for national cultural heritage. Thus, the Ngaruwat tradition serves as an educational medium that bridges local cultural heritage with modern character education in elementary schools.

Abstract

Bilingual experience is the experience of language users when they actively use two languages in their daily activities. The construction of this experience is shaped by the environment and context that encourage and require to use English as a second language (L2). The subjects in this study were 24 students from the class of 2022 in the International Relations Study Program at Sunan Ampel State Islamic University (UINSA) Surabaya. This research used a mixed methods approach with an explanatory design that utilized qualitative methods to deepen the analysis of data obtained through quantitative methods. To measure bilingual experience, a questionnaire was used containing four indicators: the use of English as a second language (L2) on campus, the use of English as a second language (L2) in social and family settings, media and learning resources to improve English proficiency, and strategies for using English as a second language (L2). These indicators also served as a reference in developing the interview guide. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics techniques with the help of SPSS 21 software, further enhanced by interview results. The results of the correlation test narrowed down to two groups. The first group is the bilingual experience variable group with "moderate" and "low" values. In this case, there were 7 correlation results between variables with "moderate" values and 11 correlation results between variables with "low" values. The second group is the variable group with "very low" correlation values. The correlation test results showed 37 correlation results between variables with "very low" values. The correlation test between the use of English as a second language (L2) outside of class hours and the use of code-switching and code-mixing was the variable with the highest correlation coefficient compared to the other variables.

Abstract

The low reading ability of second-grade students at Babadan Elementary School, with an average achievement of only 55%, emphasizes the need for more engaging and child-friendly learning media. Canva-based digital comics were chosen because they present engaging visuals, simple storylines, and enjoyable learning experiences. This study aims to develop digital comic media and test its validity, practicality, and effectiveness in improving elementary school students' reading abilities. The study used the ADDIE Research and Development (R&D) model, including needs analysis, media design, product development, implementation through pretest-posttest, and evaluation using the N-Gain Score. The research subjects were second-grade students at Babadan Elementary School and Bodor Elementary School 1. The results showed that the media's validity was very high (media experts 97.22%, language experts 93.75%, material experts 96.66%), confirming that the media met the standards for design, language, and material feasibility. In terms of practicality, the media scored 96.87%, was easy to use, understand, and was engaging for students. Meanwhile, effectiveness is evident from the improvement in student learning outcomes with a moderate N-Gain category, indicating the media is able to consistently improve comprehension. This research contributes theoretically and practically by providing a feasible, practical, and effective digital comic medium, while also enriching the literature on innovative media development for reading instruction for lower-grade students.

Abstract

The ability to write narrative texts is a fundamental competency in Indonesian language learning, but various field findings show that junior high school students still face difficulties in determining ideas, developing plots, and comprehensively understanding narrative structures. In this context, the integration of learning technologies that are sensitive to local culture is an urgent need. This study aims to develop and implement the Cerita Huma Betang Application as a medium for learning narrative writing that combines the power of digital literacy with the local wisdom of Central Kalimantan. The method used is Research and Development (R&D) with 30 eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 6 Palangka Raya as test subjects. The results of the study show that this application contributes significantly to improving students' writing skills. The Read feature, which presents folk tales such as the Legend of Riam Mangkikit and others, has proven to be effective in helping students understand the patterns of orientation, complication, and resolution. The Selecting feature plays a role in facilitating students in choosing themes, characters, settings, and cultural values, so that the writing process becomes more focused. Data showed that 86.7% of students were able to produce more coherent, logical, and creative narrative texts after using the application. In addition, student response to the application has been very positive; its simple display, intuitive navigation, and digital writing space allow students to work more independently. Thus, the Cerita Huma Betang application is considered effective, practical, and relevant as a medium for learning narrative writing based on local culture, as well as being able to support the strengthening of students' digital literacy in the era of modern learning.

Abstract

Language is not merely a tool for communication but also an instrument of power that reflects domination and social control between the speaker and the listener. In the context of sexual harassment, speech acts often serve as manipulative tools to influence, persuade, or control victims without physical violence. This study aims to describe the types and functions of directive illocutionary acts found in the audio recordings and public statements of I Wayan Agus Suartama, a suspect in a sexual harassment case. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a pragmatic approach. The data consisted of the suspect’s utterances, which were analyzed based on Searle’s (1979) speech act theory and classified into directive categories such as requests, commands, prohibitions, and advice. The findings reveal that the directive speech acts used by Agus are generally indirect and persuasive, expressed through declarative forms that conceal their true intentions. These utterances function to build trust, manipulate the victim’s emotions, and construct a positive public image. Thus, directive illocutionary acts in this case serve not only as linguistic instructions but also as instruments of power and psychological manipulation, illustrating the interplay between language and power within the discourse of sexual harassment.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of the Islamic boarding school environment on the honorific language structure of students at SMP A. Wahid Hasyim Tebuireng. The focus of the study is directed at how the daily life and culture of the Islamic boarding school shape the language habits of students, especially in the use of speech forms that show respect (honorifics). In this context, honorifics are understood not only as greetings, but also as part of the grammar of politeness and social hierarchy that reflect the values of Islamic boarding school ethics. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a naturalistic observation method, namely the researcher directly observes the language habits of students in daily activities at school and the Islamic boarding school environment. Data are collected through field notes, then analyzed and conclusions are drawn. The results of the study indicate that the Islamic boarding school environment has a strong influence on the honorific language structure of students. In daily interactions, students are accustomed to using polite and respectful language forms, such as the greetings "Ustaz", "Ustazah", "Panjenengan", as well as polite forms of speech such as "nggih", "monggo", and "nuwun sewu". The use of these forms not only reflects linguistic habits but also reflects the internalization of the values of ta'dzim (respect for teachers) and tawadhu' (humility) that are characteristic of Islamic boarding school culture.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to ascertain if the Heroic Figures Story flipbook medium and the Project-Based Learning model, which is based on the Culturally Responsive Teaching approach, have improved fifth-grade elementary school students' capacity to produce spoken texts. A quasi-experimental and nonequivalent control group design is the technique employed. Fifth-grade primary school students from classes V-B and V-C, each with 33 pupils, participated in the study. Purposive sampling was the method used in this investigation. In this study, tests and observations were used as data-gathering methods. A speech text writing ability exam was one of the tools utilised. IBM SPSS Statistics 2.6 software was utilised for the hypothesis test data analysis method, specifically the n-gain test. According to the study's findings, students at SDN 024 Coblong who received instruction using the PjBL model based on the CRT approach and the Heroic Figures Story Flipbook medium saw a more notable improvement in their ability to produce speech texts. This is demonstrated by the n-gain calculation findings, which show that the experimental class is in the medium group with a gain index of 0.55 (or an increase of 55.46%). In contrast, the control group only attained a modest gain index of 0.05 (5.20%). This indicates that the experimental class's writing proficiency increased significantly more than that of the control group. Thus, it can be said that the use of the PjBL model, which is based on the CRT approach and Flipbook media, is deserving of being suggested as an alternate teaching strategy to enhance primary school students' speech writing abilities.

Abstract

This study analysed the metacognitive awareness of 43 D-3 Mechanical Engineering students towards four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) through the Student-Centered Learning approach assisted by artificial intelligence. In contrast to previous studies that focused on quantitative correlation or test results, this study emphasizes metacognitive reflection and the role of AI as a facilitator. Primary data from exit ticket reflection, interactive quizzes, and monitoring of Brisk Boost activities were analysed qualitatively descriptively using case studies, iterative thematic coding, triangulation of sources and investigators, and member checks. The results showed that students were able to identify strengths (e.g., confidence in group discussions) and weaknesses (nervousness in speaking, weak writing structure). AI facilitates the transformation of general reflection into concrete SMART goals (e.g., 3x/week speaking practice for 5-7 minutes, reading 30 minutes/day with 5 new vocabulary), with 70% target achievement and up to 25% increase in cross-skill interaction. The integration of SCL-AI increases active engagement, intrinsic motivation, and awareness of skill interconnection. The findings contribute to the conceptual framework of metacognition–SCL–AI–SMART, with practical implications for lecturers, students, and vocational curricula.
