Abstract

This study aims to describe students' abilities with visual-spatial and logical-mathematical intelligence in solving contextual mathematical problems. This qualitative research involved two eighth-grade students from a junior high school, each with a background in logical-mathematical and visual-spatial intelligence. The task consisted of two questions that asked students to create two park designs and two alternative payment methods for the "Suroboyo Bus." These findings show both subjects’ complete fluency and flexibility indicators in creative thinking. Subjects exhibit the ability to generate diverse solution pathways and apply various problem-solving strategies. Furthermore, the creative thinking skills displayed by the subject contribute to their comprehensive understanding of mathematical concepts and foster deeper engagement with the subject. The analysis results show that students with logical-mathematical intelligence were able to solve the problems well and came up with various alternative answers that other students did not consider. Students with visual-spatial intelligence were able to solve the problems successfully but did not find ideas to search for alternative answers beyond what was already presented. These findings indicate that both students with visual-spatial and logical-mathematical intelligence were capable of solving the given contextual problems, although there is still room for improvement

Abstract

This research is based on descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The purpose of this study is to describe the understanding of the concept of algebraic form of junior high school students using APOS (Action, Process, Object, and Scheme) theory in terms of introverted and extroverted personality types. The instruments in this study are researchers (key instruments), personality type questionnaires, concept understanding tests and interviews (supporting instruments). Data collection techniques in this study using questionnaire, test and interview methods. The subjects in this study were one female student with introverted personality and one female student with extroverted personality. The results showed that the understanding of the concept of algebraic forms of introverted students based on APOS theory is at the action, process, object and scheme stages related to the concept of arithmetic operations of algebraic forms and is at the action stage related to the concept of solving contextual problems related to algebraic forms. While the understanding of the concept of algebraic form of extroverted students based on APOS theory is only at the action stage related to the concept of arithmetic operation of algebraic form and the concept of solving contextual problems related to algebraic form. Researchers hope that this research can be used as a consideration for teachers to pay more attention to the type of personality possessed by students, so that concepts can stick and reduce the occurrence of misunderstanding of concepts

Abstract

The application of ethnomathematics in teaching has many benefits. Cultural diversity can be an interactive learning resource for students. One culture that has high ethnomathematics potential is the Papuan Mountain culture. Although several examples of ethnomathematics have been found in Papuan culture, the design of ethnomathematics applications in learning is still very minimal. In addition, the lack of student involvement in the ethnomathematics exploration process is an important reason for the need to develop ethnomathematics-based learning based on 21st-century learning. The type of research is research development by using the nine stages of Dick and Carey’s development. The results of research and development concluded that the mountain ethnomathematics-based learning design was developed in 4 main stages, namely analysis, development design, implementation, and evaluation. Strategies that can be used in ethnomathematics-based learning in Papua Mountains to increase learner involvement and create meaningful learning are exploration, oriented to problem statements, constructing knowledge and experiences of learners based on their culture. The results of the analysis show that the ethnomathematics-based learning design of the culture of the Papua Mountains is good and feasible to implement with a validity index of 0.802 while the reliability index of rater agreement on the learning design is good, namely 0.896.
