Abstract

The development of Islamic philosophy is often claimed as a golden bridge by some orientalists, as a result of which many assumptions conclude that Islam has no philosophy and is even considered irrational. However, Islamic philosophy has its own originality and has undergone a long development and experienced the ups and downs of debates between groups. Therefore, this research aims to: (1) trace the main factors in the development of Islamic philosophy; (2) explore the development, differences, and changes in Islamic philosophical thought; (3) examine the shift in Islamic philosophical thought. The method applied is a qualitative method, with a literature-based data collection method, and analysed by content analysis or context. The results showed that; (1) the main factor that became the initial foundation and even provided ammunition for the development of Islamic philosophy was the process of translating Greek monumental works starting from the Umayyad caliphate, especially during the time of Abdul Malik (685-705) to the Abbasid caliphate which reached its heyday during the time of al-Makmun (813-833); (2) the development of Islamic philosophical thought was supported by a number of figures who had integrated philosophy with religion, such as al-Kindi (806-875), al-Farabi (872-951), Ibn Sina (980-1037), and Ibn Rushd (1126-1198); (3) On the other hand, Islamic philosophical thought also experienced rejection and criticism by a number of fiqh scholars, such as Ahmad Ibn Hanbal (806-875), al-Ghazali (1058-1111), and Ibn Taymiyyah (1263-1328).

Abstract

This article addresses the primary issue of environmental degradation caused by excessive human consumption and unsustainable development models. The study employs a critical analysis of the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) by Catton and Dunlap to explore the complex interactions between humans and the natural environment. Methodologically, the research utilizes qualitative data from various sources, including historical texts and contemporary studies, to illustrate how socio-cultural values and practices contribute to environmental crises. Key findings indicate that the overexploitation of natural resources, coupled with inadequate awareness of the intrinsic relationship between humans and nature, exacerbates environmental damage. The research highlights the potential of Generation Z to lead behavioral changes towards more sustainable lifestyles through social media and technological engagement. By integrating Tasawuf (Sufi) ethical values, which emphasize simplicity, ecological balance, and empathy towards all creation, Generation Z can foster a movement towards environmental preservation. The study underscores the importance of re-educating society on ethical environmental practices to mitigate ongoing environmental issues and promote sustainability.

Abstract

The emergence of the Renaissance in the Western world started when individuals exhibited a high degree of criticality towards the prevailing circumstances, subjecting everything to empirical scrutiny. To attain a truth, it is necessary to employ several modes of thinking and evidence, one of which is the criterion of rationalism, which significantly shaped the foundation of the Age of Enlightenment. The present evaluation of rationalism in the Postmodern era is crucial to determine if the sole actual truth is a rational truth that is logically coherent, if the ratio is the exclusive source of truth, or if there exist alternative truths that rationalism is unable to attain. This study aims to acquire knowledge and comprehension of the epistemology of rationalism as a theory of truth. This study methodology employs literature (library research) by systematically collecting and tracking data or library resources pertaining to the topic of the discussion and the actual problem. The results indicate that rationalism is a philosophical perspective that asserts reason as the primary instrument for acquiring knowledge, with the ultimate truth being attributed to human reason or rationality. 2) In his philosophy, Descartes introduced a way of scepticism, the doubt method, which involves questioning all beliefs, ideas, thoughts, and materials acquired by the senses. The integrity of information and knowledge acquired by individuals from birth is not assured, necessitating thorough testing through doubt. 3) Despite being driven by rational and empirical principles, rationalism is inherently incapable of elucidating or manifesting empirical existence beyond the confines of the intellect, such as phenomena related to colour, taste, smell, or shadow.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to explore Paul Ricoeur's thinking and see how far Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics is used as an approach. Paul Ricoeur's Hermeneutics is a philosophical hermeneutics whose approach is very rarely used by Exegesis academics. The research was carried out using a literature approach. Data collection was carried out through literature studies. The results of this study confirm that Paul Ricoeur's approach has been applied in various fields of study, including Islamic studies and interpretation. However, in some parts, the methodological flow of Ricoeur's hermeneutics is not used in its entirety. Some emphasize linguistic aspects, symbols and myths. Meanwhile, several scientific works use the methodological flow offered by Ricoeur in its entirety, including, Objectification of structures, Distansiasi (distance), World of Texts, and Apppropriation. Ricoeur's approach in Islamic studies is quite widely studied by academics, but in the study of the Qur'an and exegesis, Ricoeur's approach is only limited to being used as a comparison with other mufassir thoughts. In short, Ricoeur's approach is not used as a tool for interpreting the Qur'an like some other hermeneutic approaches.

Abstract

According to the QS World University Rankings for Theology, Divinity, andReligious Studies 2024, religious studies in Muslim regions are inadequately developed. The Muslims' dismissal of religious studies is intricately linked to the underdevelopmentof the field. Nevertheless, the dismissal of religious studies by Muslims is frequentlyregarded as commonplace without additional scrutiny. This study aimed to examine theMuslim aversion to religious studies and propose solutions to address theunderdevelopment of religious studies within the Islamic world. Western religiousscholars have frequently positioned modern European history, particularly secularism,as the core of their explanation of religion. For them, scientific examinations of religionmust exclude the sacred aspect of religion. Consequently, Muslims perceive that theirinterpretation of Islam is limited. The hostility and rejection of religious studies byMuslims fundamentally signify a repudiation of secularism, which negates thetranscendence of God and dismisses the role of religion in society. The debate onreligious studies has not established a neutral environment for Muslims. The authorcontemplates this antagonism to counter the narrative surrounding religious studies. This study aimed to develop Muslim conflict as a contemporary phenomenon, integrating religious studies, particularly Islamic studies, into Islam's worldview orepistemology framework, devoid of any characterization as non-rational or nonscientific. The underdevelopment of religious studies in Muslim nations is attributed toa deficiency of experts educated in contemporary academic approaches to religion. Thenormative-doctrinal approach has thus far been the predominant method employed byMuslim scholars in the study of Islam. To address the stagnation of religious studies inthe Islamic world, Muslim scholars must amalgamate the normative-doctrinal approachwith the social sciences methodology.

Abstract

This study explores the role of inclusive philanthropy in addressing the persistent challenge of poverty in Indonesia’s multicultural society, where structural disparities are often shaped by religious, ethnic, and socio-economic differences. While philanthropic traditions such as zakat, infaq, sadaqah, and waqf have long been central to Islamic social practice, their implementation has often remained confined within exclusive communal or religious boundaries, limiting their transformative potential. Taking the case of the LAZ Griya Yatim & Dhuafa Foundation in Cilegon City, this research seeks to understand how philanthropic initiatives that transcend identity-based limitations can contribute to more equitable and sustainable welfare distribution. Employing a qualitative approach that includes in-depth interviews with key philanthropic stakeholders and critical literature analysis, the study draws on Jürgen Habermas’s theory of deliberative justice to examine how inclusive philanthropy can operate within the public sphere as an instrument of both solidarity and justice. The analysis reveals that dialogically grounded and participatory philanthropy, when responsive to the pluralism of its social context, has the capacity to strengthen civil society engagement and promote fair access to welfare resources. It was found that inclusive philanthropy is an effective strategy for alleviating poverty regardless of ethnicity, religion, or race. These findings emphasize deliberative justice to ensure a fair welfare distribution through the active participation of civil society. It is hoped that inclusive philanthropic practices will increase through government policies in more structured state philanthropy and active involvement in the public sphere. Ultimately, this study offers both theoretical insight and practical direction for how inclusive philanthropic models can be integrated into broader strategies of poverty alleviation and social transformation in plural societies.

Abstract

This study examines the traditional rituals of the Baduy community related to the use of jampe and mantra as an integral part of Sundanese Wiwitan religious life. Sunda Wiwitan, as a local belief of the Baduy people, contains spiritual values, local wisdom, and traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. Jampe rituals and mantras have an important role in various aspects of life, from traditional ceremonies to traditional medicine to the practice of self-protection. This study uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods to explore the symbolic meaning, social function, and relevance of jampe and mantras in maintaining harmony between humans, nature, and Sang Hyang (God Almighty). The findings of the study show that these rituals not only reflect the cultural identity of the Baduy people but also become a medium to preserve spiritual ties with ancestors and maintain the sustainability of natural ecosystems. This research contributes to the understanding of the importance of preserving local traditions as part of Indonesia's cultural heritage and the relevance of these rituals in the context of modern life.

Abstract

The Azmiyyah Sufi Order, also known as the Azmiyyah Tariqa, has played a significant role in the spiritual and social landscape of Egypt, particularly during the Ottoman and modern periods. Emerging from the rich tapestry of Sufi traditions, the Azmiyyah Order is characterized by its unique practices, teachings, and its relationship with the socio-political dynamics of Egypt. This synthesis will explore the historical development, key figures, and contemporary relevance of the Azmiyyah Sufi Order in Egypt, drawing on a variety of scholarly sources. Throughout the Ottoman period, the Azmiyyah Order, like other Sufi orders, navigated the complex interplay between spirituality and politics. The political elite often sponsored Sufi rituals and gatherings as a means of consolidating power and countering the influence of more radical Islamist movements. This relationship between Sufism and the state was particularly evident during the 19th century, when Sufi orders, including the Azmiyyah, became involved in the socio-political fabric of Egypt, often aligning themselves with the ruling authorities to maintain their status and influence. The Azmiyyah Order's ability to adapt to changing political landscapes has been a key factor in its longevity and relevance.

Abstract

Seeking the truth is a human trait in life. The ultimate truth can be proven in the way of thinking or the human method itself. The methods used by humans in seeking the truth are philosophy and science. This article aims to discuss the relationship between philosophy and science. The method used by researchers in this study is a literature review approach or library research. Philosophy is a method used to obtain the truth by thinking continuously so as to find the ultimate truth. The truth that philosophy produces is deeply reflective. While science is part of knowledge that aims to find the truth through scientific procedures. The truth produced by science consists of the developmental values of knowledge which can change over time. Philosophy and science itself are closely related. This can be seen from the similarity of using reflective thinking to find a truth even though it has its own way. But also has a difference that is seen from the formal object. Which is where philosophy seeks information in depth while science seeks the deepest cause.

Abstract

Islamic philosophy became an interesting discourse and discussion among thinkers in the East as well as in the West in the 19th century until recently and in the history of Islamic philosophy many refer to the scientific tradition of the Islamic religion of the 8th century, especially to the study of Greek texts. The mention of Islamic philosophy is not because it is based on philosophers who do it from Islam, from the Arabs, or in terms of the object of discussion discussing the subject of Islam, but Islam is meant to be the spirit as the spiritual value of an Islamic philosophy. This was seen in Islamic philosophy during the phase after Ibn Rusyd with the name hikmah al-muta'aliyah pioneered by Mulla Shadra and developed by Suhrawardi Al-Maqtul. Thus, in this study, the formulation of the problem studied is how the existence of God in the thought of Suhrawardi and Mulla Shadra using qualitative research methods based on a literature review approach by studying books, literature, notes, and various reports related to the problem to be solved. As for the findings in this study, if Suhrawardi has an Isyraq theory in his philosophy of illumination, where God according to Suhrawardi is the light of all light capable of illuminating the universe "Nur al-Anwar" and that light is the manifestation of infinite reality, because everything created in this universe is an infinite will that belongs to Him. Whereas in the concept of Mulla Shadra's thought is closely related to the makrifat of the being that exists in God, where this form is the highest essence. Because for Mulla Shadra, maujud is not only an object of maujud, but also as an essence that cannot be limited by various mahiyahs that give various appearances, so that maujud with various forms and each existence is free from the other.
