Abstract

Stunting is a state of chronic malnutrition associated with nutritional insufficiency.  Stunting can increase the risk of morbidity and mortality, hindering children's growth and development.  Malnutrition in toddlers can also arise due to the cultural practices, eating habits, and social norms related to food intake. The role of the family and the community is very important in ensuring the success of stunting prevention programs. This study aimed to undertake a systematic review of the international literature on community-based interventions to prevent stunting in children under 5 years. We reviewed original quantitative research from Scopus, Science Direct, PubMed, and ProQuest using the keywords “community intervention” OR “family intervention” AND “stunting” AND “toddlers”. We conducted a critical appraisal using PRISMA guidelines on evidence documenting the community-based intervention or program as a strategy to reduce stunting in toddlers, between 1 January 2013 and 31 January 2023 with the inclusion criteria of English-language, full-text, open-access, quantitative studies. Thirteen peer-reviewed papers met the inclusion criteria. This review found that family-based intervention could improve child growth and community-based intervention could strengthen the community health systems. The existing evidence showed a positive impact of community and family-based intervention to prevent stunting.  Family-strengthening interventions may have an impact on reducing stunting among children under 5 years.

Abstract

Chemotherapy is a primary treatment modality for cancer, but it often results in adverse effects such as anemia due to decreased hemoglobin levels. Factors including age, chemotherapy frequency, and nutritional status may influence hemoglobin levels, particularly in rural areas with limited healthcare resources. To examine the relationship between age, chemotherapy frequency, and nutritional status and hemoglobin levels among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in a rural setting. This cross-sectional, correlational study involved 154 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Baladhika Husada Hospital, Jember, from July to September 2024. Data were collected through patient interviews, the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), and hemoglobin test results. Bivariate analysis using Spearman’s rank correlation was conducted to assess associations among variables. The majority of participants were aged 46–55 years (42.8%), had received 1–3 chemotherapy cycles (57.1%), and were at risk of malnutrition (45.5%). A significant association was found between age (p = 0.009, r = 0.191) and nutritional status (p = 0.014, r = 0.178) and hemoglobin levels. No significant association was found between chemotherapy frequency and hemoglobin levels (p = 0.60). Age and nutritional status are significantly associated with hemoglobin levels in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, while chemotherapy frequency is not. These findings highlight the need for individualized care and nutritional interventions, particularly for elderly patients in rural areas, to mitigate the risk of Chemotherapy-Induced Anemia

Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic disease that often occurs in the elderly and contributes significantly to increased morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular complications. This literature review aims to identify risk factors that influence the occurrence of hypertension in the elderly in the family environment through a literature review approach. Scientific articles published from 2019 to 2024 originated from PubMed, Garuda, and Google Scholar databases. Keywords used include “Hypertension,” “elderly.” “risk factor,” and “daily activites.” Ten article met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed further from the search results. The study results show that several main risk factors for hypertension in the elderly in the family include unhealthy eating patterns (excessive salt consumption), low physical activity, obesity, psychological stress, and low social support from family members. Genetic factors also play a role, but their interaction with lifestyle and family environmental conditions increases the potential for hypertension. Older adults who live in families with little attention to a healthy lifestyle or who experience social isolation tend to have higher blood pressure. Therefore, interventions involving families to increase awareness and play an active role in supporting older adults to adopt a healthy lifestyle, such as a low-salt diet, regular exercise, and stress management, are very important to reduce the prevalence of hypertension in this age group. Further Research is needed to develop effective family-based intervention strategies.

Abstract

Free sexual behavior poses significant risks, including sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies, and the potential for illegal abortions. The prevalence of free sexual behavior among adolescents is often attributed to inadequate reproductive health education. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a health promotion program utilizing game-based learning among students in a rural school setting. This study employed a a pre-experimental study pre-post-test group design with a sample of 31 students from Madrasah Tsanawiyah Al-Munawaroh Malang (grade nine). This research did not use a control group. Respondents were provided premarital sex education using power point presentation, a card game and educational BINGO games. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data was analyzed using paired t-test. The game-based learning method demonstrated significant effectiveness in improving adolescents' premarital sex knowledge. The average pre-test knowledge score was 6.0, while the average post-test score increased to 9.6, indicating a substantial improvement. This finding is statistically significant (p = 0.0000.050), suggesting a notable enhancement in cognitive abilities related to premarital sex knowledge among the adolescent participants. Pre-marital sex education delivered through a Game-Based Learning approach, incorporating PowerPoint presentations and games media, has the potential to empower adolescents with the knowledge and skills necessary to establish healthy sexual boundaries, prevent risky sexual behaviors, and reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections.

Abstract

Dengue fever is one of the challenging public health problems in Indonesia with an increasing trend in cases. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of dengue fever education on improving the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of housewives in preventing dengue fever. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-test post-test approach. The respondents were chosen through a simple random sampling resulting 102 of 423 housewives living in Wiloso, Gondowangi Village, Malang Regency. The intervention was carried out through lectures using presentation media and 3M Plus videos. Data were collected using knowledge, attitude, and behavior questionnaires that had been previously validated through a Pearson correlation test (r = 0.519–0.816) and shown to be reliable with Cronbach’s Alpha values of 0.856 (knowledge), 0.778 (attitude), and 0.832 (behavior). Data analysis used the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test with a significance level of p 0.05. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge (p = 0.000) and behavior (p = 0.000), while attitudes did not show significant changes (p = 0.064). This indicates that education can improve understanding and practice of dengue prevention, but attitude requires more intensive and sustained intervention. This study confirmed that empowering housewives as agents of change at the household level is very important to control dengue. The results of this study are expected to serve as a reference in the development of community-based public health education strategies in endemic areas.

Abstract

Approximately 2,500 newborns are born with thalassemia annually in Indonesia. Premarital screening can help avoid thalassemia. Health behavior is expected to be influenced by individual views about the disease, and nurses can affect health beliefs by serving as a model for the community. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between nursing students' attitudes toward thalassemia screening and their health beliefs as future nurses. In July 2025, a cross-sectional survey of 122 respondents, was conducted among participants aged 18 to 24. Simple random sampling was used to choose the sample. A questionnaire that the researcher had been tested for validity and reliability was used to gauge screening attitudes and health beliefs. The Pearson correlation test was then used to examine the data statistically. Of the respondents, only 24.59% had undertaken initial screening with Hb examination, and the majority (75.41%) had never done so. The results showed a significant relationship between health beliefs and attitudes toward thalassemia screening (p-value 0.001). In the future, developing a thalassemia screening education program based on culture and health beliefs is necessary to increase participation in thalassemia screening. Nurses should be trained to develop educational programs based on health beliefs to maximize their ability to provide interventions for at-risk groups.

Abstract

Stunting remains a threat to Indonesia's future generations. Local plants with high nutritional content include moringa leaves. This study aims to determine the level of acceptance of the subjects toward the combination of moringa leaves and eel sausage formulation and to assess the effectiveness of the sausage formulation in improving the weight and height of infants. This study uses an experimental method involving 30 toddlers, with subjects taken using purposive sampling. This study was divided into a treatment group and a control group. The study subjects consisted of 30 toddlers (15 toddlers in the treatment group and 15 toddlers in the control group). Data analysis included organoleptic testing to measure subjects' preference for the sausage formulation and a Paired-sample t-test to assess the formulation's effectiveness in improving weight and height. The results of the study showed that the average level of preference of mothers of toddlers during the organoleptic test of moringa leaves and eel sausage in terms of aroma and taste was rated as very good, while the criteria of color and texture were rated as good. There was an increase in the weight of infants before and after being given moringa leaves and eel sausage. The average weight of toddlers before being given moringa leaves and eel sausage was 15.33 kg and after being given moringa leaves and eel sausage, the average weight of toddlers increased by 0.48 kg to 15.81 kg. Meanwhile, the average height of toddlers before being given moringa leaves and eel sausage was 102.07 cm and after being given moringa leaves and eel sausage, the average height of toddlers increased by 0.6 cm to 102.67 cm. The conclusion of the study confirms that the formulation of moringa leaves and eel sausage has the potential to positively impact the increase in toddler weight.

Abstract

Health workers serve as role models, counselors, and educators in promoting preventive health behaviors. However, some female health workers still do not undergo Pap smear examinations as a cervical cancer prevention measure. This study aims to analyze the relationship between various factors and Pap smear participation among female health workers based on the Health Promotion Model. This research employed a quantitative analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of all female health workers at Gotong Royong Hospital Surabaya. A purposive sampling technique was used, involving 51 respondents who met the inclusion criteria. Independent variables included personal factors (age, perceived health, and culture), perceived benefits and barriers, self-efficacy, attitudes, interpersonal influences, husband support, and situational influences. The dependent variable was Pap smear participation. All variables were measured using questionnaires. Some of the questionnaires on independent variables were adopted from previous studies with reference to the Health Promotion Model theory. The results showed a significant relationship between age and participation in Pap smear screening among health workers, with a p-value of 0.006. However, no significant relationship was found for other variables. Age was found to be the only factor significantly associated with Pap smear participation. Future studies are recommended to use qualitative methods to explore deeper behavioral factors influencing Pap smear practices among health workers.

Abstract

Non-adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among people living with HIV (PLHIV) remains a significant global challenge in the effort to control the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In Indonesia, although access to ART continues to expand, adherence rates remain below the optimal threshold, thereby compromising treatment effectiveness and increasing the risk of drug resistance and secondary transmission. This literature review aims to explore and categorize the factors contributing to ART non-adherence among adult PLHIV. A narrative literature review was conducted through systematic searches of four major databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and SpringerLink. Articles were selected based on inclusion criteria such as publication year (2019–2025), relevance to ART adherence, and focus on adult PLHIV populations. Ten eligible articles were analyzed thematically to identify common barriers to adherence. The findings indicate that ART non-adherence is influenced by a combination of individual, social, and health system-related factors. Individual-level barriers include depression, anxiety, medication side effects, and lack of motivation. Social factors such as stigma, insufficient family or peer support, and cultural beliefs significantly hinder adherence. Meanwhile, health system barriers encompass unwelcoming services, inflexible schedules, lack of patient education, and complex administrative procedures. These results underscore the importance of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach involving psychosocial support, stigma reduction, community-based interventions, and health system reform. This review also recommends future empirical studies employing more rigorous methodologies and localized research that can inform the development of contextually and culturally appropriate interventions.

Abstract

Attention disorders often hinder students' mental well-being, social relationships, and academic achievement. One effective intervention to address these symptoms is Self-Help Group (SHG) therapy, emphasizing peer support and emotional regulation. This quantitative study used a one-group pre-posttest pre-experimental design involving 76 junior high school students in Malang Regency. The intervention was carried out in 4 SHG sessions conducted across 17 meetings aimed at improving concentration and coping skills. Attention deficit symptoms were measured using the Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17 (PSC-17) scale and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed that the average attention deficit score decreased from 5.92 (SD = 1.83) before the intervention to 5.41 (SD = 2.26) after the intervention, indicating an improvement in focus and attention. Statistical analysis showed a significant effect with a p-value of 0.011 (p 0.05). These findings prove that SHG therapy is effective in reducing attention deficit symptoms and improving students' learning focus. The application of SHG in schools can be an innovative psychosocial approach to support mental health and education quality in Indonesia.
