Abstract

Indonesia's agriculture is evolving towards modern, high-value, and market-driven practices, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Technological change, markets, institutions, climate change, and government policies influence the performance of agriculture. The government plays a major role in agricultural innovation through investment in agricultural Research and Development (R&D), focusing on food and nutrition security, climate resilience and sustainability, and agricultural transformation. This paper aims to analyze the level and structure of agricultural R&D funding in Indonesia and draw recommendations for reorienting future agriculture R&D priorities. The analysis is based on a series of focused group discussions and secondary data from related stakeholders, enriched by information from the literature review. This study assesses Indonesia's agricultural R&D funding, finding it minimal at less than 0.2% of agricultural GDP, mostly public-funded. Farmers are slow to adopt these innovations despite substantial spending on technology dissemination. Gaps exist in accelerating agricultural transformation and technology adoption. Based on the findings, we propose seven recommendations for reorienting the R&D funding, including increasing the funding level of public research and better disseminating research results Keywords: agricultural R&D, gaps, recommendation, reorienting, Indonesia

Abstract

Changes in institutional structures, mandates stated in laws and regulations, growing community participation, and the involvement of government institutions in international space organizations have resulted in issues related to countries’ contribution of roles and responsibilities, as well as the strategic value of collaboration for implementing national space science. This study presents the discourse on space science activities in Indonesia. Based on the analysis results of 92 online media articles published from 2022 to 2024, various actors spoke about space science, emphasizing more collaboration and a formulary of technical regulations to handle the country’s wide area, while considering modalities that need to be strengthened and challenges that need to be addressed. Using a relationship mapping method known as discourse network analysis (DNA), in which the results were analyzed for causal-effect among them, this study has identified three gaps as the national priority needs: space security for national sovereignty, space disaster mitigation due to falling space objects, and flight safety due to space weather. This study has explained these challenges through a framework that captures the interplay of actors, policy gaps, specific sophisticated technologies, and mandates of actors.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of smart destination management on tourists’ satisfaction and perceived sustainability in six major destinations in Indonesia: Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Malang, Bali, and Lombok. Using the Smart Tourism Destination (STD) framework, this study investigates the effects of smart tourism infrastructure, destination communication, and crowd management experience, with perceived destination accessibility as a mediator and tourists’ digital literacy as a moderator. A total of 380 valid responses were collected through a structured survey and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results show that the three core dimensions contribute significantly to enhance tourists’ satisfaction, with perceived accessibility serving as key mediator. Tourists’ satisfaction also strongly predicts perceived sustainability. Digital literacy moderates the smart services’ effectiveness, highlighting the importance of individual readiness. Multi-Group Analysis (MGA) results reveal that crowd management has a significantly stronger impact in islandbased destinations, suggesting the need for context-sensitive strategies. Theoretically, this study expands the STD framework by integrating individual and spatial dimensions. Practically, it offers insights for destination managers to invest in inclusive technologies, support digital literacy, and tailor approaches based on destination types. These findings support the development of smart and sustainable tourism, particularly in emerging economies like Indonesia.

Abstract

This study investigates the key determinants of Islamic FinTech adoption by extending the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) framework to include Perceived Sharia Compliance and Perceived Innovativeness as antecedent variables. A quantitative approach was employed using survey data from 380 Islamic bank customers in Indonesia who had experience with Islamic FinTech services. The findings reveal that both antecedent variables positively influence Perceived Ease of Use and Perceived Usefulness, confirming the relevance of both religious values and innovation perceptions in shaping users’ attitudes. Consistent with TAM, Perceived Ease of Use impacts Perceived Usefulness and Behavioral Intention, while Perceived Usefulness is a key driver of customers’ intention to utilize Islamic FinTech services. Additionally, Behavioral Intention significantly predicts Actual Adoption, which subsequently enhances Customers’ Satisfaction. Mediation analysis results further shows that Behavioral Intention partially mediates the relationships between TAM beliefs and Actual Adoption. This study has contributed to the growing body of Islamic banking literature by enriching the TAM framework with culturally relevant and innovation-oriented constructs. The findings provide important insights for Islamic banks and FinTech service providers, highlighting the needs to develop Shariacompliant, user-friendly, and technologically advanced services to drive customers’ adoption and satisfaction. Recommendations and future studies directions are also discussed.

Abstract

This study investigates how digital transformation (DT) and financial literacy (FL) influence innovation capability (IC) and financial management effectiveness (FME) in family-owned small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across five Southeast Asian countries. Grounded in the resource-based view, the model positioned organizational learning (OL) and strategic agility (SA) as mediators linking DT and FL to performance outcomes. Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey of 300 respondents and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings reveal that DT primarily enhances OL, while FL exerts a stronger influence on SA. Both OL and SA significantly drive IC, which in turn positively affects FME and firms’ competitiveness (FC). Additionally, FL is revealed to be a meaningful predictor of DT, suggesting that financially literate leaders are more likely to adopt and implement digital tools effectively. This study also uncovers cross-country differences in path strengths, reflecting how institutional context shapes capability development. While all core hypotheses are supported, this study is limited by its cross-sectional design, reliance on selfdeveloped measurement items, and partial regional scope. This study contributes to the literature on SMEs’ internal capacity-building by highlighting the complementary roles of digital and financial competencies in enhancing innovation and strategic outcomes within family-owned business context.

Abstract

To benefit community welfare, a set of policies to improve access to—and the quality of—basic health services by encouraging thorough efforts via technological adoption is necessary, such as by implementing telemedicine. This study aims to determine the readiness of telemedicine adoption and evaluate telemedicine implementation policies to enhance community welfare in the post-COVID-19 era. Using a case-study and qualitative descriptive method, the data were analyzed using Powersim Studio 10 through systems thinking approach. A post-COVID-19 Telemedicine Service Policy and Management Model was developed using system dynamics through simulation. Secondary data included COVID-19 case numbers and telemedicine platform usage during the pandemic. The findings reveal three key reinforcing loop (R) relationships in telemedicine service management: (1) the enhancement of service speed positively influences users’ convenience; (2) the improvement of telemedicine provision enhances the service simplicity and users’ convenience; and (3) a rise in telemedicine users stimulates improvements in service quality. These loops demonstrate mutual benefits, where advancements in one aspect positively affect others. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and providers to optimize telemedicine delivery in the post-pandemic era. Recommended actions include increasing public awareness of telemedicine's benefits and ensuring user-friendly platforms without compromising service effectiveness and efficiency.

Abstract

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role within emerging economies, such as Indonesia, yet many struggle to maintain competitiveness due to limited internal capabilities and uneven digital adoption. While market orientation and financial practices have been widely studied, few studies have examined how these strategic elements interact, particularly in the context of emerging markets where digital infrastructure and managerial resources are often constrained. This study addresses this gap by investigating the direct and indirect effects of Market Orientation and Strategic Financial Practices on Competitive Advantage, using Indonesia’s retail SMEs as the empirical setting. Grounded in Resource-Based View and Dynamic Capabilities Theory, the model incorporates three mediators: Innovation, Resource Allocation, and Financial Reporting Quality, and examines the moderating role of Accounting Information Systems (AIS). Data were collected from 500 SMEs managers and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results confirm the significant impact of both market and financial capabilities on Competitive Advantage, and demonstrate how these relationships are amplified by innovation, effective resource use, and financial transparency. AIS also positively moderates the financial strategy–performance link, highlighting its role in digital transformation. This study provides a holistic framework for enhancing SMEs’ competitiveness and offers practical insights for policymakers and SMEs development programs.

Abstract

While the effect of knowledge management (KM) in predicting firm innovation and performance has been extensively documented in large enterprises, its dynamics within micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are relatively underexplored. The current study surveyed 174 Indonesian MSMEs, employed Hayes PROCESS Macro to investigate the KM-innovation-performance pathways with firm size as a moderator. The findings reveal that medium-sized firms exhibited the greatest KM practices, innovation, and performance. KM significantly enhanced innovation and performance, while innovation had no significant impact. Firm size strengthened the KM-innovation-performance linkage, while the KM-innovation-performance mediation and its size conditional effects were positive yet marginally insignificant. Theoretical and practical contributions are also discussed, and recommendations for further studies are also proposed.

Abstract

This article explores how science fiction films shape science and technology policy by constructing public imaginaries and envisioning future scenarios. Grounded in the Narrative Policy Framework and the theory of sociotechnical imaginaries, the study employs narrative analysis to examine selected films—Interstellar, Gattaca, Her, and The Martian—focusing on how they portray ethical dilemmas, technological visions, and sociopolitical themes relevant to policy discourse. The findings reveal recurring narrative tropes such as techno-utopianism, existential risk, space exploration, and post-human futures, which inform how societies imagine innovation, regulation, and governance. Rather than treating films as mere reflections of technological change, the article argues that they actively shape collective hopes, fears, and expectations around emerging technologies. These cinematic narratives function as cultural tools that frame policy discussions on artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and climate technologies. By connecting popular culture with policy analysis, the article highlights the role of science fiction in the anticipatory governance of science and technology, offering an interdisciplinary contribution to Science and Technology Studies (STS).
