Abstract

The background to writing this article was the variety of linguistic phenomena in reduplication used in local print media. This phenomenon is evident in the diversity of types and categories of essential words/primary forms that form reduplication. This research aims to describe the types and categorization of words that form reduplication in local print media. There are three research methods and techniques used in this paper, namely: methods and techniques for providing data; methods and techniques for data analysis; and methods and techniques for presenting data analysis results. In providing data, the observation method is used with basic techniques, tapping techniques, advanced techniques, skillful free-involvement listening techniques, and note-taking techniques. The matching process and the addition method were used to analyze the data. An informal presentation method is used to present the results of data analysis. The population of this study consisted of reduplications used in two local print media, namely the Padang Ekspress and Singgalang newspapers. The research sample was reduplication in the Padang Ekspress and Singgalang newspapers published from January to August 2024. The findings in this research are based on the type of reduplication, there are four types of reduplication used in local print media, namely complete/whole reduplication, partial reduplication, reduplication with a combination of affixes/affixes, and phoneme-changing reduplication. Based on the categories of words that form reduplication, reduplication in local print media is formed by repeating ten categories of essential words/primary forms, namely repetition of basic words/basic forms in the categories of noun (KB), verb (KK), adjective (KS), word numbers (Kbil.), question words (KT), pronouns (KG), demonstrative words (KP), adverbs (adv.), unique morphemes (MU), and words of greeting (KSp).

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the feelings of inferiority and compensatory behaviors of the main character in the novel Kawi Matin di Negeri Anjing by Arafat Nur, using Alfred Adler's psychology theory. The research methodology employed is qualitative descriptive analysis, involving repeated readings to describe the identified data comprehensively. Through the analysis conducted, it was found that Kawi Matin, as the central character in the novel, faces serious psychological issues stemming from his inferiority complex. These issues include shame, insecurity, fear, doubt, submissive obedience, feelings of inadequacy, and a need for encouragement or support. The inferiority complex possessed by the main character significantly affects his psychological condition. Consequently, the character development of the protagonist is prominently visible from the beginning to the end. Furthermore, Kawi Matin's compensatory actions do not bring significant changes to his life, largely because he lacks a concrete vision for his future. This is due to psychological factors resulting from inferiority of the main character Kawi Matin which greatly influences his personality.

Abstract

In criminal law evidence mechanisms, actus reus and mens rea are two elements that must be fulfilled. A person suspected of committing a criminal offense cannot be held criminally liable if the element of mens rea is not found in their actions, even if actus reus is present (in certain crimes, legal liability depends on mens rea). This study aims to demonstrate the relevance between actus reus and mens rea in language-based criminal offenses, presented through a forensic linguistic approach. It highlights the role of linguistics in describing and explaining linguistic phenomena structurally and intentionally within the scope of criminal law evidence. The utterance data for this case study were sourced from cases handled by the Polrestabes Bandung. This study employs three main theories, i.e. presupposition, speech acts, and felicity conditions, with additional relevance theory, conversational implicature, and politeness principles. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that a criminal act (actus reus) that lacks malicious intent (mens rea) but arises from negligence (culpa) does not necessarily meet the criteria for prosecution under Article 45(3) of Law No. 19 of 2016 on Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE), as the act is deemed not to fulfill the element of “Setiap Orang yang dengan Sengaja” as stipulated in the article.

Abstract

Language is always used in everyday communication. During the communication process, cooperation between the speaker and the interlocutor is necessary. The principle of cooperation is one of the studies in pragmatics. Many violations of the cooperative principle can create humor, but not only violations; adherence can also create humor, and this can be seen in the Playlist Cerita Cintaku 2022 on the YouTube channel Raditya Dika. This research aims to explain the maxims of the cooperative principle that are adhered to and violated in the Playlist Cerita Cintaku 2022 on the YouTube channel Raditya Dika and to explain the techniques of creating a humorous language based on the language categories found in the Playlist Cerita Cintaku 2022 on the YouTube channel Raditya Dika. There are three stages of research, namely the data provision stage, data analysis stage, and presentation of data analysis results stage. In the data provision stage, the method and techniques used are the observation method with basic tapping technique and advanced technique of Free Involvement Conversation Observation (FIC) and note-taking. In the data analysis stage, the method and techniques used are the pragmatic equivalence method with basic Determining Element Selection (DES) technique and advanced techniques of Comparing Similarities (CS) and Comparing Differences (CD). In the presentation of data analysis results stage, an informal presentation method is used. From the data analysis results, there are cooperative principle maxims that are adhered to, namely the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, and the maxim of relevance. The violations of the cooperative principle maxims identified are the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relevance, and the maxim of manner. Then, there are techniques for creating humor based on language categories, namely: bombast, definition, facetiousness, infantilism, over-literalness, pun, wordplay, repartee, ridicule, sarcasm, and satire. From these techniques, it can be seen that the violation of the maxims of the cooperative principle is the most prevalent in creating humor.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengelaborasi representasi nilai-nilai kritik sosial yang muncul pada cerpen Makhluk di Belakang Rumah karya Pramoedya Ananta Toer melalui tinjauan sosiologi sastra. Keadaan sosial yang digambarkan dalam sebuah karya sastra dapat menjadi penanda penting realitas yang terjadi pada masa karya tersebut diciptakan oleh pengarangnya. Melalui karyanya, pengarang ingin menyampaikan kritik sosial terhadap berbagai kesenjangan yang terjadi di masyarakat. Oleh karena itu, tulisan ini juga akan menguraikan gambaran kondisi sosial masyarakat di dalam cerita dan fenomena sosial pada masyarakat yang ditunjukkan pada masa setelah revolusi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode kepustakaan dan simak catat dari korpus yang digunakan. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan membaca keseluruhan cerita dari cerpen, membuat kategori, dan menganalisis nilai-nilai kritik sosial yang tergambar di dalamnya. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ditunjukkan representasi keadaan sosial masyarakat yang terdapat pada cerita Makhluk di Belakang Rumah dan nilai-nilai kritik sosial yang terkandung di dalam cerpen seperti kritik sosial moral, kritik sosial pendidikan dan eksploitasi anak, kritik sosial terhadap nilai-nilai kemanusiaan, dan kritik sosial nilai moral.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap dan memahami penerapan lima kode semiotika Roland Barthes dalam cerpen A.A. Navis, “Man Rabuka”, yang dipilih karena kekayaannya akan tanda-tanda sosial dan simbol-simbol budaya. Penelitian kualitatif deskriptif ini menerapkan pendekatan objektif dalam menganalisis kata, frasa, dan klausa yang mengandung lima kode Barthes: hermeneutik, konotatif (semes), simbolik, aksian, dan budaya. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa kode-kode tersebut beroperasi secara berlapis untuk membongkar makna tersembunyi dan kritik sosial narasi. Kode hermeneutik menciptakan misteri melalui pertanyaan tentang keheningan desa dan stigma pengkhianat. Kode konotatif mengungkapkan kekosongan spiritual karakter Jamain melalui ekspresi penderitaan batin dan atribusi ironis kualitas surgawi pada keburukan duniawi (opium, tuak). Kode simbolik menyajikan oposisi biner yang runtuh antara Pahlawan (sang kakak) dan narator (Aku), yang pada akhirnya ditiadakan oleh kekuatan Kelupaan. Kode aksian memetakan urutan peristiwa penting, terutama penyiksaan sang pahlawan dan tindakan satir Jamain menyuap Malaikat Kubur. Terakhir, Kode budaya diwujudkan melalui istilah agama dan Minangkabau seperti Tuanku, malin, dan frasa judul Man Rabuka. Kesimpulannya, pendekatan semiotika Barthes berhasil mendekonstruksi “Man Rabuka” sebagai sistem tanda yang kompleks, merefleksikan pandangan dunia penulis dan kritik sosial terhadap masyarakat yang terjebak dalam formalisme dan materialisme.

Abstract

Formasi ideologi dalam cerita pendek “God Sees the Truth, But Waits” menjadi fokus utama penelitian ini, khususnya terkait bagaimana berbagai ideologi direpresentasikan dan dinegosiasikan dalam cerita. Dengan menggunakan kerangka hegemoni Antonio Gramsci, penelitian ini memandang teks bukan hanya sebagai cerita moral, tetapi sebagai ruang kontestasi ideologi. Pendekatan kualitatif diterapkan dengan desain analisis wacana kritis melalui teknik close reading untuk mengidentifikasi struktur naratif, penokohan, dialog, dan simbol sebagai penanda ideologis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tradisionalisme, materialisme, anarkisme, humanisme, dan spiritualisme hadir dan saling berinteraksi melalui hubungan ideologi kontradiktif, korelatif, dan subordinatif. Materialisme tampak sebagai ideologi dominan pada awal narasi, sementara spiritualisme secara bertahap menjadi ideologi penengah melalui transformasi tokoh utama. Pergeseran ini menunjukkan adanya negosiasi ideologi yang berlangsung melalui mekanisme konsensus alih-alih paksaan sebagaimana konsep hegemoni Gramsci. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa “God Sees the Truth, But Waits” tidak hanya menampilkan nilai moral dan spiritual, tetapi juga merepresentasikan ideologi kolektif yang mencerminkan pandangan sosial-politik Tolstoy sebagai pengarang.

Abstract

This study examines women’s resilience through the main character in Hanauzumi, a novel by Watanabe Jun’ichi. Employing a narrative approach and feminist literary criticism, the research explores the factors that shape resilience, the forms of resilience displayed by the female protagonist, Ogino Ginko, and the outcomes achieved. The findings reveal that both internal factors, such as trauma and illness, and external factors, including social pressures and societal expectations, shape Ginkgo’s resilience. In confronting these conditions, Ginkgo demonstrates strength through transformations in her appearance and her courage in facing social rejection. Ultimately, she succeeds in fulfilling her aspiration to become a female physician. The character Ogino Ginko in the novel Hanauzumi represents a resilient woman who can confront and overcome both internal pressures, such as trauma and illness, and external pressures in the form of social expectations and gender-based discrimination. The forms of resilience she demonstrates include symbolic identity transformation and the mental fortitude to persevere. Her ultimate achievement as a female physician signifies Ginko’s success in breaking through gender boundaries and proving that women are capable of determining their own life paths. This study highlights the importance of understanding the dynamics of women’s resilience in literary texts as a reflection of their existential struggle against patriarchal cultural dominance.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menganalisis cerita pendek “Sommerhaus, später” dan “Rote Korallen” karya Judith Hermann sebagai cerminan kondisi sosial masyarakat Jerman pascareunifikasi. Melalui pendekatan sosiologi sastra, penelitian ini mengidentifikasi tema-tema utama seperti krisis identitas, ketidakpastian masa depan, dan disonansi antara harapan dan kenyataan yang dialami oleh generasi muda pada masa pascareunifikasi, terutama untuk warga Jerman Timur. Adapun teori yang akan membantu untuk menguraikan permasalahan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori yang berkenaan dengan krisis identitas oleh Hall (1993) dan Erikson (1968), disonansi kognitif oleh Festinger (1957), serta konsep Erlebnisgesellschaft oleh Schulze (1992) dan Bauman (2000). Kompleksitas persoalan sosial, ekonomi, budaya, dan politik yang dialami masyarakat Jerman Timur setelah reunifikasi ditunjukkan oleh teks secara tersirat. Melalui kutipan yang terdapat dalam kedua cerita pendek tersebut dapat terlihat gambaran kebingungan dan keterasingan yang dirasakan oleh tokoh-tokohnya yang saling berkelindan. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa teks objek penelitian ini tidak hanya merefleksikan pengalaman individu, tetapi juga mencerminkan trauma dan pengalaman kolektif masyarakat Jerman dalam menghadapi perubahan besar yang terjadi pascareunifikasi.

Abstract

This study examines written language errors in public spaces at Universitas Andalas as a response to a linguistic paradox: the international recognition of Indonesian—marked by its designation as an official language of UNESCO—and persistently disordered domestic practices, particularly within higher education contexts. The objectives of the study are to identify the forms and degrees of dominance of linguistic errors and to interpret their implications for language practices and institutional image. Employing a descriptive–analytical approach, the study applies error analysis to 30 data sources containing 151 linguistic errors. The results reveal that orthographic errors are the most dominant, accounting for 73.51% of all cases, followed by lexical choice errors (9.93%), sentence-level errors (5.30%), logical errors (4.64%), and phrase- and clause-level errors, each comprising 3.31%. These findings suggest that linguistic issues in public spaces are predominantly microstructural and technical in nature, reflecting a low adherence to the norms of written Indonesian. This phenomenon suggests a lack of normative awareness among educated communities. The study recommends strengthening the role of academic institutions in monitoring language use in public spaces and utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in conjunction with human linguistic expertise to enhance the quality of public texts, thereby contributing to the elevation of Indonesian as a national language.
