Abstract

With the wider range of humans accessing various information and entertainment on social media, translation is increasingly important in the cyber world to make information easier for people with different language backgrounds to process. Subsequently, @badmintalk_com's caption on breaking news posts furnished both the English and Indonesian languages. Human involvement in translating can reduce or eliminate the result of an awkwardly translated text. The research uses the theories of Molina and Albir to determine and find the translation techniques in the data and Nababan’s to assess the translation quality in terms of readability. Through the qualitative descriptive methodology, the result found that there are 8 out of 18 translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002), with the frequent in detail as follows: Amplification 16 (25.8%), Reduction 12 (19.3%), Literal Translation 11 (17.8%), Transposition 7 (11.3%), Borrowing 6 (9.7%), Generalization 5 (8.1), Particularization 4 (6.4%), and Description 1 (1.6%). Therefore, the readability assessment shows that out of sixty-two pieces of data obtained, 52 were counted as readable with a percentage of 83.9%, less readable (16.1%), and no data is considered unreadable

Abstract

In the digital age, where conventional methods of feedback may no longer be sufficient, e-feedback presents a modern approach that aims to provide clarity and efficiency. This study investigates the effectiveness of electronic feedback, or e-feedback, in enhancing students' writing skills. This descriptive qualitative study involved 25 students from a university in Central Kalimantan and used a diverse range of data collection methods, including open-ended and closed-ended questionnaires, observations, interviews, and analysis of student papers. Throughout ten instructional meetings, participants expressed positive feedback regarding the e-feedback method, highlighting its time-saving nature, clarity, and user-friendliness. They particularly valued the opportunity to correct their mistakes, with the use of color-coded highlights to understand different types of errors adding an engaging element to the feedback process. While the advantages of e-feedback were widely recognized, some participants noted a desire for more verbal explanations to accompany their written feedback. Overall, the findings indicate that e-feedback not only boosts students' enthusiasm and participation in writing classes but also significantly improves their writing skills.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the factors that lead students to use swearwords and to find out how students feel when they do so. The research was conducted on B-class students of the English Literature study program at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung during the 2020 academic year. This research employed a qualitative research method with a case study design, describing the data narratively. Six respondents were interviewed using ten items to identify the factors and feelings associated with the use of swearwords. The study found that the use of swearwords is dominantly triggered by negative emotions like anger and discomfort, which are worsened by entertainment media and surrounding culture. Surprisingly, two participants discovered that their game teammates strongly supported using swearwords. Further, people's reactions and moods after swearing vary from harmony to silence, depending on the situation at hand. These findings emphasize the long-term impact of swearing on social perceptions and interpersonal relationships, highlighting a comprehensive approach to understanding and managing sensitive communication behaviors.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly reshaped the world of education, particularly in how university students access and interact with learning resources. Among the various AI tools, ChatGPT stands out for its capability to engage advanced, human-like conversations, offering students a novel way to obtain information and interact with academic content. This study aims to investigate university students' perspectives on using ChatGPT compared to traditional textbooks as learning resources. Employing a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 students from Indonesia and Malaysia, allowing for a comparative analysis of their experiences. The findings reveal a significant paradigm shift in learning behaviours, with ChatGPT emerging as the preferred initial resource, even among students who recognize the importance of textbooks. This research highlights the transformative potential of AI in education and emphasizes the necessity for educators to adapt their teaching practices to effectively support student learning in an increasingly AI-driven environment.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the views of both preparatory school instructors and students concerning native speakerism within the context of English Language Teaching (ELT), English language variations, and culture. The research involved 171 preparatory students and 70 instructors affiliated with a non-profit university in Istanbul, Turkey. Employing a mixed methods approach, this study sought to comprehend the perspectives of these participants. Quantitative data were gathered through surveys adapted from Liu (2018), while qualitative insights were obtained via semi-structured interviews with instructors. The collected data underwent analysis using SPSS and content analysis techniques. The analysis of student perceptions, categorized by gender and proficiency levels, revealed no significant disparities in their views on ELT and culture. Nonetheless, differences surfaced among A1 and A2 level students concerning English variations. In contrast, instructors' perceptions, factoring in their years of experience and academic qualifications, exhibited no variations in relation to ELT, English variations, and culture. Qualitative findings indicated that instructors had positive attitudes toward teaching diverse cultures and English language varieties. Moreover, instructors expressed the belief that discrimination between native and non-native instructors should cease.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the educational paradigm shift caused by artificial intelligence. The theoretical frameworks in this study are Artificial Intelligence and English Language Teaching. The research methodology used case study qualitative. The data used in this research consists of statements taken from the Forum Group Discussion. The data source consisted of FGD transcripts by three English teachers from a favorite high school in Surabaya. The data collection technique used focus group discussion. The analytical approach used thematic analysis. From the FGDs conducted, three axes of answers were found. The first is related to the consequences of artificial intelligence in changing the educational paradigm through tasks given to students. There are three things in giving assignments, 1) A shift from assigning tasks based on Lower Order Thinking Skills to Higher Order Thinking Skills. 2) A shift from directive assignments to reasoning or explanation and 3) Giving tasks that are theoretical to practice. Second, the learning process reflects significant changes. There are two main reasons why the learning process can cause significant shifts. 1) The shift from teacher center to student center and 2) The change from learning using traditional methods to using technology. Third, the utilization of artificial intelligence in learning purposes also reflects a very important phenomenon. There are two main reasons in learning. 1) The change from knowledge mastery to the application of knowledge to solve problems and 2) A paradigm shift from simply answering questions to developing critical and creative thinking skills.
