Abstract

Multicultural education is key in overcoming intercultural conflicts and increasing understanding between individual students and society. This study explores the implementation of multicultural education at MI Riyadlotul Ulum Kunir Demak as a case study, focusing on the role of multicultural education in dealing with social diversity. Qualitative methods were used to collect data through observation, interviews and document analysis. The results show that MI Riyadlotul Ulum Kunir Demak has adopted a multicultural education approach with initiatives such as a multiculturally oriented curriculum and the use of the latest technology. The impact is an increased student understanding of social diversity and a higher level of tolerance towards cultural and religious differences. However, there are still challenges such as limited resources and the lack of parents' role in supporting multicultural education. Greater efforts are needed from the government to support the implementation of multicultural education explicitly in the curriculum. The results show that multicultural education can help students become more inclusive, open to differences and ready to contribute in a diverse global society. This is an important step in dealing with social diversity in the digital age.

Abstract

One of the discussions of ulumul qur'an which has a very important position in the study of Islamic science is the Science of Qira'at. Qira'at Science is a scientific fan that concentrates on examining the validity of the text of the Qur'an, both in terms of pronunciation and writing. According to scientific terms, qira'at is one of the madhhabs (schools) of pronunciation of the Qur'anic recitation chosen by one imam qurro' as a school that is different from other schools. Differences in reading the Qur'an in general can affect changes in meaning, including the implications for legal istinbath. However, is the taking of Istinbath law from a madzhab adopted by a country in harmony with the qira'at that is popular in that country? This research is in the form of library research (literature study), literature study can be interpreted as a data collection technique by conducting a study of books, literature, notes, and reports that have a relationship with the problem being solved. The object of observation in the research is the diversity of qira'at and its implications for Istinbath law in a madzhab. After analysis, it was found that a recitation of qira'at that is popular in a country does not have to be in line with the method of Istinbath law carried out by the imam of the madzhab that applies in that country. The results of this research are expected to provide a new perspective in the study of Ulumul Qur'an as well as knowing the values that are an inspiration for the community.

Abstract

Interpreters need to employ appropriate interpreting strategies to prevent information overload. The skills to employ such strategies may be associated to their experience. The current study investigates interpreting strategies employed by inexperienced novice interpreters (students) and more experienced interpreters (early professionals). The objective of this study is to make a comparison between interpreting strategies adopted by novice interpreters and those by early professional interpreters. The participants of the study were twenty students taking consecutive interpreting course and nine early professional interpreters. The data, gathered from video recordings of consecutive interpreting tasks, were analyzed to identify the strategies employed by the interpreters. The findings show that there are four strategies employed by the novice interpreters and six by the early professionals. The four strategies by the novice interpreters are skipping, word for word translation, guessing, and reproduction. The six strategies by the early professional interpreters are stalling, reproduction, word for word interpretation, inferencing, approximation, and taking advantage of cohesive markers. This shows that the early professional interpreters have wider repertoire of interpreting strategies compared to their novice counterparts. The limited number of strategies employed by the novice interpreters may be caused by their limited listening capacity, limited vocabulary, and their note taking skills. This implies that the consecutive interpreting course needs to be offered for students having passed courses on basic language skills. The second implication is that the consecutive interpreting materials need to include materials on active listening, chunking, and note taking.
