Abstract

This research is based on the idea that students must use in daily interactions in school language programs. Therefore, learning vocabulary is very important for improving students' language skills. Students should learn as much vocabulary as possible to communicate well with others. This study investigates students’ vocabulary learning strategies outside of classroom activities. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods, where the researcher implements interviews and observation as data collection techniques. Researchers used observations to understand the school environment where students learn in school language programs. Researchers used semi-structured interviews with three students as participants to find out strategies for learning vocabulary. The interview technique used was focus group discussion to reduce students' nervousness in expressing ideas. The data obtained was then divided into several classifications of vocabulary learning strategies by Schmitt (1990), namely determination, social, memory, cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies. The research results show that students often use meta-cognitive strategies to improve their vocabulary skills.

Abstract

Unbeknownst to many, a child's character does not develop spontaneously; instead, it undergoes a process that involves specific phases, particularly during early development, especially for young children. Parental attention in shaping a child's character during this period is crucial. In forming the character of young children, the environment and the family role-play a significant influence. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method to explore this process. In this article, the researcher examines the process of forming the character of young children, focusing on three main elements: family, school, and community. The research findings indicate that the formation of the character of young children begins with the family, is further influenced by the school, and involves the role of the community, including play communities and talent development courses attended by young children. Nevertheless, the family remains the primary and foremost factor in the process of shaping a child's character, being the most minor and highly influential community for them.

Abstract

This study examined the enhancement of English communication skills among adults working in Mulyaharja’s Tourism Village, with the aim of empowering the community through improved language proficiency. Adopting Beeton’s Active Community Tourism Development Model, which emphasizes empowering local communities through active participation, the study involved 18 adult participants and four English instructors from the College of Vocational Studies of IPB University. Using a combination of questionnaires and a pre-test/post-test design, the research assessed participants’ language skills and perceptions before and after the training. The findings revealed a significant improvement in post-test scores, with an average increase of 50%, indicating the program’s effectiveness in fostering language skills. Participants reported high satisfaction rates, with 82% recognizing the relevance of the training to their professional and personal lives. These outcomes underscore the role of English proficiency in enhancing interactions with foreign tourists and supporting community development. Feedback also highlighted high motivation levels, as participants valued the training’s applicability to their roles, while observational notes captured challenges faced, offering insights into areas for future training improvements. The research highlights the potential of targeted English training in rural tourism contexts to strengthen community empowerment and communication skills, suggesting that future programs could benefit from extended courses and follow-up sessions to consolidate learning.

Abstract

This study explores gender differences in language learning strategies (LLS) within the Indonesian context. Drawing on various studies, it reveals mixed results regarding the preference for strategies between male and female students. Some studies, such as Budiarti (2022), report no significant gender differences, while others (e.g., Rianto, 2020; Melvina et al., 2020) suggest that female students, particularly those with higher English proficiency, use strategies more frequently. Female learners tend to prefer metacognitive strategies (e.g., planning and self-monitoring), while male students lean toward cognitive strategies (e.g., memorization) and social strategies (e.g., peer interaction). The study highlights strengths in the use of validated instruments like the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) but also identifies weaknesses such as response bias and limited consideration of contextual factors like motivation and social support. These findings indicate that gender influences strategy use, but external factors, including proficiency and motivation, also play significant roles. The research recommends adopting more comprehensive research methods and practical teaching approaches that account for gender-specific strategy preferences, thus fostering more inclusive language learning environments. This study contributes to both theoretical and practical insights in foreign language education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study investigates teachers’ perception on the use of ICT in ESP class. This research employed a qualitative case study. The semi structured interview was used to collect the data. The data from the interview were analyzed with Thematic Analysis using Nvivo R14 software. The qualitative data analysis resulted in two primary themes supported with several subthemes. The two primary themes are teachers’ positive perception and teachers’ challenges. The teachers perceived ICT facilitates ESP teaching and it makes teaching more enjoyable. However, the challenges such as the increase of copy-paste/cheating habits, limited internet access and the difficulty of monitoring students still occur during the class. The findings of this study would give a better insight of what constitutes an environment that is conducive for learning where ICT is integrated into the classroom especially ESP class.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the understanding of 6C PGSD students regarding learning theories and their implementation in teaching, focusing on aspects of theoretical comprehension, application, evaluation, and integration with elementary school curricula. This descriptive study involved 37 students enrolled in the Microteaching course. Data were collected through a Google Form questionnaire during November-December 2024. The results revealed that students' understanding levels were categorised as fairly good. Comprehension in the context of education reached 65%, application of theory 61%, evaluation and analysis of theory 68%, and integration of theory with elementary school curricula 64%. A portion of the students were categorised as highly proficient, particularly in the evaluation and analysis aspect (24%). However, some students still faced challenges, especially in applying theory (8%). These findings indicate that while students generally have a solid foundational understanding of learning theories, they require further reinforcement through intensive practice and applied learning approaches to enhance their implementation skills.
