Abstract

Characterization of a material in dentistry has been developed for research purposes. One of the characterization tools that are often used in dentistry is Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is a technique used to obtain the absorbance pattern of a compound of a material. FTIR can be used to analyze organic and inorganic compounds. In addition, FTIR can also be used for qualitative analysis including functional group analysis (the presence of a 'peak' from a specific functional group) along with its pattern and quantitative analysis by looking at the absorption strength of compounds at certain wavelengths. determine the composition of the compounds that make up a material. This paper aims to examine the use of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy FTIR as a characterization tool in dentistry. The spectral image pattern produced by the ATR-FTIR tool can provide information on the composition of the compound so that it becomes one of the tools of choice for characterizing a material.

Abstract

Tooth discoloration is one of the aesthetic problems that have a significant impact on psychological conditions. Pineapple is a natural ingredient that can be used as an alternative to dental bleaching. Citric acid and malic acid in pineapple can bind calcium in teeth and cause porosity of enamel crystals which in turn reduces the enamel hardness. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of pineapple gel (Ananas comosus) application on tooth enamel hardness. The study design was a pretest and post-test controlled group design. Twenty five post extraction maxillary premolars were divided into 5 groups. The pH test of pineapple gel was done before treatment, each group was applied pineapple gel 25%, 50%, 75%, 35% hydrogen peroxide gel, and gel without active compounds. The hardness test was carried out using Vickers Hardness Tester. Data analysis used Paired t-test, Wilcoxon, Kruskal Wallis, one way ANOVA using probability 0,05. Paired t-test results showed significant differences in tooth enamel hardness before and after application of pineapple gel 50% (0,04), 75% (0,00), 35% hydrogen peroxide gel (0,04), but no significant difference in tooth enamel hardness before and after application of 25% pineapple gel (0,16). Wilcoxon test results no significant difference in tooth enamel hardness before and after application of gel without active compounds (0,08). Kruskal Wallis (0,17) and one way ANOVA (0,06) test results no significant differences in tooth enamel hardness between groups. The results of this study concluded that pineapple gel application can be recommended as an alternative to dental bleaching.

Abstract

Periodontal disease is a common oral disease. The main cause is microorganisms that colonize in dental plaque. Dental plaque is a collection of microorganisms that form a biofilm. The most effective way to control plaque is to brush your teeth regularly and use mouthwash. Aloe vera as an herbal plant has many benefits due to its properties, such as; antiseptic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, and wound healing. These properties make aloe vera potential to be utilized as an anti-plaque mouthwash. The purpose of this paper is to determine and review the use of mouthwash containing Aloe vera as an inhibitor of plaque formation. Mouthwash containing Aloe vera is proven to inhibit plaque formation, due to its active compounds such as saponins, anthraquinones, phenols and flavonoids.

Abstract

Performing treatment for diastema closure of the maxillary anterior teeth is a challenge for dentists. They are required to do the best possible treatment and are faced with various treatment options, such as direct and indirect restorations. A 32-year-old female patient came to the dental clinic with complaints of a space of her front teeth. The patient wanted her teeth to be fixed. She wanted the space between her teeth to be closed. On clinical examination it was found that there was a diastema between 11 and 21 with vital and healthy condition without any caries lesion. We perform the gingivectomy on the gingival margin of 11 and made the porcelain labial veneer restorations. The gingivectomy was planned to obtain a more aesthetic and symmetrical margin compared to 21. The porcelain labial veneer restorations chosen to be inserted to the patient. The restorations have adapted well to the teeth and soft tissues. Porcelain labial veneer treatment as an indirect restoration is one of the options for the cases of diastema closure of the maxillary central incisors due to their good aesthetic appearance.

Abstract

Research about cellulose fiber from coconut fibers (Cocos nucifera L/coir) was currently done as an organic fillers for dental composite materials. DGEBA was chosen as a coupling agent to obtain covalent chemical bonds between BisGMA, TEDGMA matrices and coir cellulose fibers. The mixing method of DGEBA played an important role in the biocompatibility of the material. The ideal requirement for dental materials must be non-toxic through cytotoxicity tests. Objective to modify the synthesis method of coir-based cellulose as a natural fiber to optimize chemical bonding through polymerization reaction between fiber, coupling agent and matrix. Methods: There were 2 kinds of cellulose synthesis methods, which were (1) synthesis of cellulose solution using DGEBA and ethanol, (2) synthesis of cellulose solution using ethanol without DGEBA. Cytotoxicity test on pulp fibroblast cells with MTT Assay method on coir cellulose fiber composite samples from the two methods. Method 1 cell viability rate for 7 days immersion was 93.30855%, 14 days was 99.07063%, 21 days was 74.53532%. Method 2 obtained 64.68401% for 7 days immersion, 73.79182% for 14 days and 53.15985% for 21 days. Conclusion, the cellulose solution synthesis method using DGEBA and ethanol produces composites with better chemical bonds seen from the results of the cytotoxicity test

Abstract

Gypsum is a material that is commonly used in dentistry as study model or working model. The accuracy of the working model is influenced by the absence of defects in the model. Dental students need to know the gypsum setting time in order to avoid fracture of the model when opening the model from negative impression before reaching final setting time. Gypsum setting time can be affected by several factors such as water temperature, water ratio, room temperature and mixing speed. Measurement of gypsum setting time has been done before, however, the number of samples used was still few. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the setting time of gypsum with different water/powder ratio on a big number of samples. This research was done by dental students of Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Trisakti as one of Dental Material’s Courses. A total of three types of water ratios were used in this study, namely 27 cc, 30 cc and 33 cc (n = 141). Type III gypsum powder was weighed with the same weight of 100 gr and then mixed by different water ratios for 60 seconds. Gypsum mixture was placed on a container and vibrated for 60 seconds to eliminate pores. The placement of a small needle to measure the setting time begins at the 150th second and was repeated in multiples of 30 seconds until the tip of the needle did not penetrate the gypsum mixture. The results showed that more water ratio caused the setting time of gypsum type III increased.

Abstract

Extrusive luxation is an outward or incisal displacement of teeth due to trauma with long- term complications, namely pulpal necrosis and periapical inflammation. Endodontic treatment that can be performed on immature permanent incisor is regenerative endodontics or apexification. The aim of this case report is to evaluate the effectiveness of calcium hydroxide paste as a dressing material in regenerative endodontic treatment. A 7 year old girl patient was brought by his mother to the Children's Dental Polyclinic at RSGM UNPAD with complaints that the front maxillary teeth touched the ground. The results of the clinical examination showed that tooth 11 was extruded by 4 mm and had a mobility level of 2 and the gums were swollen and exposed labial to apical third. The treatment carried out was fixation and orthodontic treatment but after 6 months of treatment tooth 11 returned to extrusion. Radiograph showed radiolucency in periapical region 11, negative vitality test, grade 1 mobility test and 4 mm probe test in mid-buccal region. The treatment performed is regenerative endodontics. Currently, patients use calcium hydroxide paste as a dressing material to treat periapical abscesses. After 3 months of treatment, from the patient's periapical X-ray, it can be seen that the radiolucent appearance in the periapical area has begun to decrease. Calcium Hydroxide Paste is an effective dressing material for regenerative endodontic treatment of immature permanent incisor with dentoalveolar trauma.

Abstract

Wax is a soft and flexible material obtained from plants and insects or made synthetically and composed of high molecular weight organic molecules. One of the properties of dental wax or wax is the property of distortion, namely the return of the modified form of dental wax or wax to its original shape. Wax patterns or wax models are used as wax patterns in the manufacture of orthodontic appliances, complete dentures, and other prostheses that use plastic construction. Base plate wax is a dental wax for denture patterns based on acrylic resin. To evaluate wax distortion that occurs at room temperature for 24 hours. Testing of 141 wax samples placed at room temperature 25°C for 24 hours. One-way ANOVA test revealed a significant difference (p<0.05) in storage of wax at room temperature for 24 hours. There is an effect of temperature and storage time on the amount of wax distortion that occurs.
