Abstract

Elementary school students in Indonesia generally do not know the proper and correct steps for washing hands according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which is indicated by the high rate of spread of hand-borne diseases, including diarrhea. Diarrhea is an endemic disease in Jombang Regency with the incidence rate increasing in 2019 compared to 2018. Teaching Staff of the Department of Clinical Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, UNAIR, carry out community service activities with the aim of providing education on how to wash hands properly and correctly for Madrasah Ibtidaiyah students (MI) Mambaul Maarif Denanyar Jombang. The method of socializing the correct hand washing steps is carried out in two stages, namely education and evaluation. The education carried out is an explanation of the correct steps for washing hands according to WHO, what germs are found on human hands, what diseases can be transmitted through hands, and when we should wash our hands. Evaluation is carried out by culturing germs from the surface of the hands at two times, namely before and after washing hands. The data obtained is the difference in bacterial culture results in specimens before and after washing hands. The growth of bacteria before hand washing showed more colonies compared to after hand washing.

Abstract

Corn is the second largest commodity in Tawangrejo Village, Gemarang District, Madiun Regency with a harvest reaching 3 tonnes in 2023. The large corn harvest is in line with the corn waste produced at the end of each harvest period. Until now, corn waste is still used as animal feed in small quantities and the rest is burned, resulting in air pollution around Tawangrejo Village. The work program of "KKN-BBK 2 Universitas Airlangga" aims to educate the public to optimize corn harvest waste while providing additional income from selling these handicraft products through digital marketing. The short-term result of this activity is that the people of Tawangrejo Village can make crafts from corn husk waste to become furniture decorations and brooches. Apart from that, the people of Tawangrejo Village are also able to create accounts on the marketplace and know marketing strategies that can be applied easily. The expected long-term result of this activity is that the income of the people of Tawangrejo Village can increase. For sustainability activities, training should be carried out regularly so that people can hone their creativity more deeply and become experts in making crafts. Apart from that, education regarding interesting marketing methods is also carried out regularly so that the public understands better and can be implemented in other products.

Abstract

Segunung is one of the six Dusun in Carangwulung, Wonosalam, Jombang, East Java where Sapi Perah Jaya and Wanita Tani Perah Jaya groups manage to breed 210 dairy cows. The milk produced is deposited to KUD Anjasmoro before being transferred to the milk processing industry and some is processed by Wanita Tani Perah Jaya into pasteurized milk. The problems faced by dairy farmers, especially after the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak, are the decreasing milk and feed production, and livestock health. The problem faced by Wanita Tani Perah Jaya is a lack of knowledge about dairy product verification and marketing. To solve this problem the researchers administer nano meniran extract containing bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and Saponin flavonoids, as an immunomodulator, stimulate and improve the immune system and the impaired immune function, while Saponins increase the diameter of the villi and the permeability of intestinal cell walls, thereby affecting the absorption of nutrients carried by feed. If the immunity increases and the absorption of feed nutrients is good, it will increase milk production in dairy cows. Through this community service activity, there will be increased empowerment of partners of the Sapi Perah Jaya Group with training in making concentrate with meniran nano extract as well as milk processing at the Wanita Tani Perah Jaya. The solution is to diversify milk in the form of yogurt. This activity was carried out using three methods: 1) Counseling on making beef concentrate with the addition of nano meniran extract, making yogurt and marketing dairy products, 2) Training on making the concentrate and making yogurt 3) Monitoring and evaluation that was carried out every month for 3 months after the counseling and training were carried out. The results obtained from this community service are the increased empowerment of partners and the increased skills of farmers in making concentrates and dairy products in the form of yogurt and marketing them. The successful application of technology through community service can increase the income and welfare of these two groups.

Abstract

Thalassemia is the most common monogenic disease in Asia, including Indonesia that causes burdens for the government, patients, and families. As the sixth most non-communicable disease, thalassemia utilized IDR 600 billion in 2022 for more than 300 thousand cases. With, 3.8% of Indonesians carrying a mutation of thalassemia on their globin gene, this economic burden is projected will increase if no actions are taken. On the other hand, child marriage is reported to increase every year, including among orphans. Without proper knowledge and genetic testing on thalassemia, child marriage might contribute to the increasing of thalassemia patients. Thus, increasing knowledge on thalassemia among orphan adolescents is important. This community development uses several methods, including seminar, discussion, book, and poster, targeting the orphan adolescents (n= 40) in Mojokerta, East Java. A questionnaire on thalassemia was used to measure the knowledge, before and after the activity. The results show that the respondents have a moderate knowledge about thalassemia (median= 4 (0-9)), and increase to median=9 (3-10)) after the activities (p< 0.001). Even though overall knowledge is increased, several information including thalassemia is a genetic disease, not similar to blood cancer, not the only type of anemia (Q6), and how to diagnose thalassemia (Q9) still need to be emphasized. Taken together, direct and indirect approaches, such as seminar, discussion, book, and poster are effective in increasing thalassemia knowledge among orphan adolescents. These activities are more effective in targeting late adolescents, compared to early and middle adolescents. However, more effective methods are necessary to target Generation Z who are more familiar with the internet.

Abstract

Research is not only based on what we create, but whether the research can be applied and have a positive impact on society in general or not. SMAN 3 is one of the favorite schools in Semarang, but until a long time SMAN 3 Semarang has not been a research-based school, so this PkM aims to provide a more detailed understanding of research. The method used is by mentoring SMAN 3 Semarang in the process of becoming a research-based school, and building a journal as a medium to publish the results of student and teacher research. The result of this service was the establishment of a research centre at SMAN 3 Semarang and the journal Journey. With this journal, the published research results will be able to bring significant changes to sustainable research, where young people will be able to improve their competence in the field of research and can become reliable researchers in facing the era of globalization. Furthermore, in this community service, the step to build a smart centre is to apply it to the curriculum and this will be able to have a significant impact such as the establishment of UMKM to support the community's economy.

Abstract

Self-medication behaviors of the society kept increasing as years passed, including for the residents of Desa Pengalangan, Kecamatan Menganti, Kabupaten Gresik. Over-the-counter medicines, the ones that can be obtained without a prescription, have been a prior solution to relieve the symptoms of various diseases. Unfortunately, the consumption of these medicines is not accompanied by proficient knowledge of how to manage medicines properly. Consequently, the health of the community and environment are negatively affected. Therefore, it is considered crucial to educate society as a form of approach made for promoting public health and preventing the irrational usage of medicines. Socialization of the ‘DAGUSIBU' (dapatkan, gunakan, simpan, dan buang) [eng: get, use, store, and dispose] of medicines through a session of interactive mini-lecture and simulation, has been chosen to be the proper modality to deliver such information about managing medicines. About 21 health cadres of Desa Pengalangan are involved in this program, fulfilling the pretests and post-tests as instruments to determine the level of knowledge of the society about medicines. Based on the result of this program, it is noted that an average of 80.9% participants' level of knowledge increases after socialization. Highest increase in the level of knowledge is reported in the topics ‘Golongan obat' [eng: drug's classes] (85,7%) and ‘DAGUSIBU obat' (85,7%), while the topic ‘Penggunaan antibiotik' [eng: antibiotic usage] (71,4%) becomes the topic with the least increase in the level of knowledge. Though these findings seem in line with the previous studies, innovations are required to optimize the increase of society's level of knowledge in managing medicines.

Abstract

Metabolic disease is an epidemic phenomenon that affects both men and women from various ages, ethnic, and socio-economic groups. The term metabolic disease itself is an umbrella term that includes, among others: hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Lifestyles such as poor nutrition, physical activity, and habits are risk factors that can increase the incidence of metabolic disease. Therefore, prevention of metabolic diseases is necessary, including for ordinary people. Metabolic disease, namely hypertension, is in 3rd place and diabetes is in 10th place, the most common disease suffered by residents of Singotrunan Village, Banyuwangi. In this regard, it is important to make efforts to prevent metabolic disease and even death due to complications from metabolic disease. This community service program is designed to create a fit village as a sustainable healthy lifestyle, initiated through health checks for screening, exercise training, education and discussions as encouragement to do regular exercise. The participants' pre-test and post-test results showed a significant increase in their level of knowledge (p=0.01). Abstract

MSMEs have an important role in a nation's economy because of their contribution to national sales and employment. Moreover, the structure of business entities in Indonesia is still dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are compelled to compete on the global market due to the numerous blows from global competition and the prospect of recession. To increase the competitiveness of domestic MSMEs so that they can excel on the international stage, strategic and effective methods are required, such as implementing the marketing mix. Community service through a marketing mix strategy aims to increase MSMEs in Gresik Regency's comprehension of how to implement marketing mix strategies in order to prepare themselves for entry into the global market, which will result in increased sales. The method is implemented in three stages from March to October 2023: the preparation stage, the implementation stage, and the evaluation stage. The preparatory phase commences with routine coordination with partners and condition analysis. The implementation phase is subsequently executed via training, mentoring, question-and-answer sessions, and case discussions. In the evaluation phase, a pre-test, post-test, question-and-answer session, and questionnaire are utilized. Target partners are actively involved at all stages, so that the output targets can be achieved well. The implementation has resulted in an increase in MSMEs' knowledge of the marketing mix, which includes product, place, promotion, and price, as well as an increase in MSMEs' sales due to their increased global marketing reach. This community service also contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
