Abstract

This study was motivated by the use of conventional Student Worksheets (LKM) that have not optimally facilitated students in conducting inquiry, constructing concepts, and actively engaging in learning chemistry, particularly in the abstract topic of chemical bonding. This study aimed to develop an Electronic Student Worksheet (E-LKM) based on Guided Inquiry Learning assisted by Discord for Phase F chemical bonding and to determine the validity and initial student responses to the developed product. This study employed an Educational Design Research approach using the Plomp development model, which was limited to the development or prototyping phase, particularly the one-to-one evaluation. Product evaluation consisted of self-evaluation, expert review, and one-to-one evaluation. Product validity was analyzed using Aiken’s V index, while student responses were analyzed using a five-point Likert scale. The results of the expert review showed that the E-LKM obtained an average Aiken’s V value of 0.87, categorized as valid. The one-to-one evaluation involving three students showed a “Strongly Agree” category across all assessed aspects, including clarity (4.53), attractiveness (4.60), engagement (4.58), learning motivation (4.53), and errors and improvements (4.56). Thus, the E-LKM based on Guided Inquiry Learning assisted by Discord was considered valid and received positive responses from students, indicating its potential as an interactive digital learning material to support student engagement and learning motivation in Phase F chemical bonding.

Abstract

Acids and bases are a topic in chemistry that students often find difficult to understand because it combines conceptual understanding with mathematical calculations. This study aims to describe students’ conceptual understanding profiles regarding acid base concepts based on the results of a two tier multiple choice diagnostic test. This study employed a quantitative descriptive approach involving 67 twelfth-grade students in Phase F at SMAN 7 Padang, distributed across two classes and selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected using a two tier multiple choice diagnostic test consisting of 20 items. Students’ responses were categorized into four groups Correct-Correct (CC/conceptual understanding), Correct-Wrong (CW/misconception error 1/MK-1), Wrong-Correct (WC/misconception error 2/MK-2), and Wrong-Wrong (WW/does not understand the concept), and were then analyzed descriptively in terms of percentages at the overall level, by indicator, and by test item. The results of the study showed that, overall, students achieved a CC percentage of 46.72%, a CW percentage of 25.07%, a WC percentage of 10.30%, and a WW percentage of 17.91%. The highest level of conceptual understanding was found in test items regarding statements consistent with the Arrhenius acid base theory, the limitations of the Arrhenius acid base theory, and the determination of acid base solutions based on litmus paper data, with a CC percentage of 79.10%. The lowest level of understanding was found in the item testing the calculation of the degree of ionization based on pH and Ka, with a percentage of students who answered correctly (CC) of 5.97%. These findings indicate that students relatively well understand the theoretical foundations and identification of acids and bases, but experience significant difficulties when conceptual understanding must be integrated with computational skills, exhibiting a variety of misconceptions.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) based on deep learning on fifth-grade students' learning outcomes in the ecosystem topic at SD Negeri 190 Pekanbaru. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 58 students, with 29 students in class V A as the experimental group and 29 students in class V B as the control group. The experimental group received PjBL based on deep learning with a concrete ecosystem aquarium, while the control group received the learning commonly used by the teacher. Data were collected through multiple-choice learning outcome tests administered as pretests and posttests. Data were analyzed using normality, homogeneity, N-Gain, Paired Samples T-Test, and Independent Samples T-Test. The results showed that the experimental group increased from a mean pretest score of 67.62 to a posttest score of 89.28, with a mean N-Gain of 0.65. The control group increased from 64.41 to 79.55, with a mean N-Gain of 0.41. The Independent Samples T-Test yielded t = 5.896, df = 56, and Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 < 0.05. Cohen's d was 1.55, indicating a large effect. Therefore, PjBL based on deep learning had a significant and large effect on fifth-grade students' learning outcomes in the ecosystem topic.
