Abstract

Citizenship Education plays a strategic role in shaping the character of elementary school students. Amid rapid global changes, strengthening character education at the elementary level is essential to build the foundation of responsible and democratic future citizens. This article aims to analyze the contribution of Citizenship Education to the development of moral values, national identity, and social responsibility in elementary students. Using a systematic literature review approach, this article examines research published between 2015 and 2025 regarding the implementation of character education in primary schools through Citizenship Education. The analysis shows that Citizenship Education significantly strengthens students’ awareness of national values, moral reasoning, discipline, empathy, tolerance, and social responsibility. Effective learning models such as project-based learning, cooperative learning, contextual learning, and digital-based learning also enhance the internalization of character values. Teachers play an essential role as facilitators and role models in guiding students toward positive behaviors. This study underscores that Citizenship Education must be integrated comprehensively into learning processes and school culture to achieve optimal character development outcomes. Strengthening Citizenship Education in elementary schools is crucial to ensuring that students develop not only academic competencies but also strong character that aligns with Pancasila values.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the reading interest of first-grade students at SD through the use of the Literacy Tree media in learning activities. The background of this study is based on the low level of students’ reading interest, which is indicated by a lack of enthusiasm in participating in reading activities, minimal interest in reading materials, and a low frequency of students engaging in independent reading. These conditions highlight the need for innovative and engaging learning media that are appropriate to the characteristics of early-grade elementary school students. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR), conducted in three cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the study were first-grade students of SD Negeri 61 Banda Aceh. Data were collected through observation sheets, documentation, and reading interest assessment instruments. The Literacy Tree media was used as an attractive visual learning tool designed to display students’ reading outcomes in the form of “literacy leaves” attached to a tree. Each leaf contained simple information such as the book title, short summaries, or students’ impressions after reading. This media aimed to enhance students’ motivation through a visual approach, simple appreciation, and by fostering a sense of pride and confidence in their reading achievements. The results of the study indicate a significant improvement in students’ reading interest in each cycle, as shown by increased participation in reading activities, greater enthusiasm in selecting reading materials, and a higher tendency to engage in independent reading. Therefore, the Literacy Tree media is effective as an alternative learning medium to enhance reading interest among elementary school students.

Abstract

Professional ethics in education is the moral foundation that guides teachers in carrying out their duties and responsibilities professionally. Teachers not only act as instructors, but also as educators, mentors, and role models for students in the character-building process. This article aims to comprehensively examine professional ethics in education, teachers' responsibilities for student development, the role of teachers as ethical and moral role models, teachers' protection of students' rights, and various obstacles to the application of professional ethics in the educational environment. The method used is a literature review by examining various relevant sources, such as books, scientific journals, and laws and regulations in the field of education. The results of the study show that understanding and applying professional ethics in education greatly determines the quality of the learning process and the educational relationship between teachers and students. Teachers who uphold professional ethics are able to be fair, objective, responsible, and respect the rights and dignity of students. However, in practice, the application of professional ethics still faces various obstacles, such as limited understanding of ethics, high workloads, environmental pressures, and technological developments that require ethical adaptation. Therefore, a shared commitment between teachers, educational institutions, and other stakeholders is needed to strengthen the consistent application of professional ethics. With the proper application of professional ethics, it is hoped that quality education that is character-building and oriented towards the holistic development of students will be realized.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the development of a competency-based Islamic Education (PAI) curriculum as an effort to enhance students’ character. The urgency of this research is based on the increasingly complex moral and social challenges faced by the younger generation, indicating that Islamic Education learning should not only focus on mastery of subject matter but also on the formation of attitudes and behaviors. This study employs a qualitative approach using a library research method and descriptive analysis of the concept of competency-based curriculum and its implementation in Islamic Education learning. The findings reveal that a competency-based PAI curriculum emphasizes the integration of spiritual attitudes, social attitudes, knowledge, and skills. The strengthening of students’ character is carried out through the integration of religious values, honesty, discipline, responsibility, and tolerance into learning objectives, learning materials, active learning strategies, and authentic assessment systems. Therefore, the development of a competency-based PAI curriculum plays a strategic role in shaping students who possess strong character, noble morals, and the ability to internalize and practice Islamic values in their daily lives.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has brought significant changes to the lives of elementary school–aged children, particularly in relation to the increasing use of gadgets that is not always accompanied by adequate digital literacy. Excessive and unsupervised gadget use can lead to various negative impacts, including decreased learning concentration, declining academic achievement, risks of digital addiction, exposure to negative content, and ethical issues in online interactions. This community service activity aimed to enhance elementary school students’ awareness and understanding of digital skills and negative content management through education on wise gadget use. The program was conducted at SD Inpres Sero, Makassar City, involving fifth- and sixth-grade students and teachers as partner participants, using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. The methods included initial observation, interactive seminars, educational videos, quizzes, discussions, and evaluation. The results showed very high levels of student participation and enthusiasm, as well as an increase in students’ initial awareness of the importance of managing screen time, selecting safe and appropriate content, and applying digital ethics. This educational intervention proved effective in building a positive foundation of digital literacy despite being implemented within a limited time frame and with minimal resources. Overall, this activity confirms that a school-based educational approach oriented toward active student participation can serve as an adaptive alternative strategy for fostering healthy and responsible digital habits from an early age.

Abstract

The implementation of the Merdeka Belajar policy has brought fundamental changes to learning practices, including physical education. Physical education learning is no longer oriented solely toward mastery of sports techniques, but rather toward the holistic development of students through meaningful, student-centered, and contextual learning experiences. This article aims to examine the transformation of physical education learning in the era of Merdeka Belajar, focusing on changes in learning orientation, instructional strategies, and assessment practices. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach through literature review of national policies, curriculum documents, and recent scientific articles related to physical education and independent learning. The findings indicate that the transformation of physical education learning emphasizes flexibility in curriculum implementation, the integration of project-based and differentiated learning, and the development of students’ physical literacy, character, and critical thinking skills. Teachers are encouraged to act as facilitators who design adaptive learning environments based on students’ needs, interests, and local contexts. In addition, authentic assessment becomes a key component to evaluate students’ learning processes and outcomes comprehensively. The transformation of physical education learning in the Merdeka Belajar era is expected to improve the quality of learning and foster lifelong healthy and active lifestyles among students.
