Abstract

As cultural homogenization grows and local identities begin to fade, preserving oral traditions plays a more vital role in keeping communities connected. This study aims to examine the uniqueness and relevance of the pepaccur tradition in strengthening social ties within the Lampung community. This research employs a qualitative methodology with an ethnographic approach. Data were gathered through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with traditional practitioners, and a review of relevant literature. The analysis was conducted using interactive analysis techniques to explore the symbolic meanings and social functions embedded in the tradition. The findings indicate that pepaccur serves not only as a medium of customary communication but also as a unifying instrument that bridges diverse social groups through shared values, mutual respect, and cooperation. These findings have implications for social science education by highlighting the pedagogical value of integrating local traditions to promote understanding of social cohesion, identity, and cultural sustainability. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on pepaccur as a culturally embedded practice that contributes to the theoretical and practical discourse on local wisdom as a foundation for social harmony in multicultural settings.

Abstract

Ecological intelligence is crucial in enhancing human awareness of environmental issues. However, there is a lack of research on how environmental care attitudes are developed through the learning process in the classroom. This study aims to explore how students perceive environmental care attitudes based on ecological intelligence. The research used a quantitative methodology with a percentage technique and involved 120 students from Madrasah as the sample. Research data were obtained through a closed-ended questionnaire, and the data were analyzed through percentages. The findings show that students possess a high level of environmental care, as evidenced by the highest agreement level in the head (cognition) or learning to know with 89.3%, followed by the heart (affection) or learning to be with 86.5%, and then the hands (conation) or learning to do with 85.6%. The result indicates that students who participate in environmental care activities in school have good ecological intelligence. These results suggest that integrating ecological intelligence into classroom learning can effectively foster environmental care attitudes. Therefore, educators and curriculum developers should consider incorporating more environmental education components into daily instruction. Future research may explore the long-term impact of ecological intelligence-based learning on students’ environmental behavior outside school.

Abstract

Though micro-MSMEs are being more acknowledged as important engines of local economic growth, especially in tourism-oriented areas, there is still little knowledge of how community communication networks operate as tools of social empowerment, especially in settings characterized by internal migration, digital inequality, and resource asymmetry. This paper looks at how such networks enable indigenous and migrant micro-MSME players in Pangandaran, a fast-growing coastal tourism area in Indonesia. The study uses a qualitative case study method to grasp the complexity of community dynamics set against the background of unequal access to resources and possibilities among commercial actors. Data were gathered using in-depth interviews with 20 key informants and 4 community representatives, supplemented by participant observation and community document analysis. The research found, via thematic analysis, that communication networks are also platforms for empowerment by means of training, resource access, and social solidarity in addition to channels for corporate information exchange and promotion. Especially during the COVID-19 crisis, when tactics like product diversification and internet marketing became vital, these networks have supported corporate adaptation. Still, there are ongoing issues, including low digital literacy, unequal information access, and intra-community conflicts hindering group development. The results highlight the need to enhance community capacities by means of inclusive communication policies, digital literacy projects, and conflict resolution tools. Local governments, community-based organizations, and legislators trying to create strong and inclusive economic ecosystems in tourism-dependent areas will find these ideas useful.

Abstract

Pappaseng, a form of traditional Bugis oral literature, serves as a cultural medium for transmitting moral values through proverbs, advice, songs, and dialogic expressions. These forms function as pedagogical tools for both individual and communal character development. This study aims to explore the potential of Pappaseng as a culturally rooted framework for national character education in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative descriptive method through library research, the analysis draws upon primary Pappaseng texts and secondary sources from anthropology, education, and local wisdom studies. The research addresses the limited integration of indigenous oral traditions within current character education models. The findings reveal that Pappaseng embodies essential values, such as honesty (lempu’), wisdom (amaccang), and courage (getteng), that can be meaningfully integrated into educational practices to promote ethical awareness and national identity. These values are transmitted not only through interpersonal advice but also via traditional artistic expressions, including kaddo bora (songs) and dialogic storytelling. This study offers a novel contribution by positioning Pappaseng as an underutilized indigenous epistemology within the discourse on character education. As such, it provides a culturally relevant resource for strengthening national character through formal education and community engagement initiatives.

Abstract

Background: Undak Usuk Basa, the system of speech levels in Sundanese society, functions not only as a medium of communication but also as a representation of social hierarchy and politeness. This study contributes by highlighting the socio-pragmatic functions of Undak Usuk Basa in the modern context, an aspect often overlooked in previous research that has predominantly focused on its decline.Purpose: The purpose of this research is to analyze how Undak Usuk Basa encodes social hierarchy and how modern social changes influence its patterns of use.Method: The method employed is a literature study, analyzing 25 selected articles out of an initial 45 obtained from databases such as ScienceDirect, Garuda, Google Scholar, Sinta, and DOAJ, covering publications from the past decade. The selection process was based on criteria of topical relevance, credibility, and both theoretical and empirical foundations. Results: The findings reveal that Undak Usuk Basa regulates language choice based on age, social status, and interpersonal relations, making it an essential instrument for maintaining social harmony. However, globalization, urbanization, and the penetration of digital media have fostered more egalitarian and practical communication patterns, particularly among younger generations, leading to a decline in the use of speech levels.Theoretical implication: The study affirms that linguistic hierarchy functions as cultural capital, reflecting and sustaining social structures.Practical implication: The findings suggest the need for preservation through education, digital media, and cultural programs.

Abstract

Background: Students often experience a learning plateau, a stagnation in progress that negatively impacts motivation and academic outcomes. Previous studies have yet to explore effective interventions to overcome this issue, particularly in social studies learning.Purpose: This study aims to identify the stages of project-based learning (PjBL) in social studies, measure students’ learning plateau levels before and after its implementation, and evaluate its effectiveness in reducing the plateau.Method: A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach was used. The participants were eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 12 Parepare, selected through purposive sampling, in class VIII.1 serving as the experimental group. Data were collected using learning plateau measurement instruments and analysed using the Paired Samples Test and N-Gain Score. Results: The PjBL model was implemented in five stages: essential question, project planning, scheduling, monitoring, and evaluation. The results indicated a significant reduction in students’ learning plateau levels, shifting from medium–very high to low–very low categories. A significance value of 0.000 in the Paired Samples Test confirmed the difference, while the average N-Gain Score was 0.29.Theoretical implication: These findings support the effectiveness of PjBL in addressing learning stagnation and contribute to the broader pedagogical discourse on active learning models.Practical implication: The results suggest that PjBL can be adopted in classroom practice to enhance student motivation and learning outcomes in social studies, particularly at the junior high school level.

Abstract

Background: Research on the dynamics of Toraja death rituals has generally emphasized visual aspects such as Tongkonan architecture, the slaughter of sacrificial animals, or mass processions. However, the role of the Tominaa as guardians and preservers of ritual traditions has not been sufficiently explored.Purpose: This study aims to investigate the presence of Tominaa in the funeral traditions of the Toraja people, which have changed over time. As indigenous oral poets, Tominaa lead ceremonies by chanting sacred verses known as kadong badong or tumba and serve as crucial pillars in preserving the cosmology and values of Aluk Todolo, the ancestral faith.Method: The research employs a literature review approach, analyzing previous scholarly works, theoretical frameworks, and key findings related to the role of Tominaa in Toraja funeral traditions. Results: The findings indicate that the role of Tominaa extends beyond ceremonial leadership, encompassing cultural guardianship, the preservation of identity, and the safeguarding of Toraja spirituality.Theoretical implications: This study enriches the understanding of Toraja culture and provides a living laboratory for abstract Social Studies concepts, thereby deepening comprehension of Indonesia’s sociocultural dynamics.Practical implications: Recognizing the Tominaa as custodians of ritual knowledge underscores the need for cultural preservation efforts through intergenerational transmission, integration into local education, and supportive policies, ensuring the continuity of Toraja’s intangible heritage amidst modernization.
