Abstract

The unemployment rate of vocational high school (SMK) graduates in Indonesia, including West Sumatra, remains high despite their work-based education. This suggests a gap between acquired competencies and the willingness to work. This study examines the impact of employability on students’ work motivation. Using a quantitative approach and simple linear regression, data were collected from 200 vocational students via standardized questionnaires. Results show that employability has a positive and significant effect on work volition, with a determination coefficient of 17.2%, while 82.8% of the variation is influenced by other factors. This indicates that strengthening employability, such as technical skills and work readiness, can significantly boost students' motivation to work. The findings underscore the importance of targeted programs, such as career guidance, job skills training, and coaching, in enhancing students' employability from an early stage. Improving these aspects can increase their willingness to enter the workforce and reduce youth unemployment. Keywords: employability, work volition, vocational students

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyse the ideal character of indigenous counsellors in Indonesia based on moral and spiritual teachings in Serat Wedhatama. Gadamer's hermeneutic approach is used to explore the deep meaning of the Serat Wedhatama text and contextualize it within the framework of modern guidance and counseling. The primary source of Serat Wedhatama was analysed using a qualitative approach, focusing on the reduction process, data presentation, and conclusions. The Miles and Huberman approach was used in the data reduction and presentation process, which allows the identification of the ideal counsellor character based on Serat Wedhatama. The results of the research, based on the analysis of the Serat Wedhatama text, indicate that Characters such as humility, patience, perseverance, compassion, self-awareness, caution, surrender to God, and remembering the afterlife are identified as important attributes of indigenous counsellors. These findings provide a significant contribution to counselling practice in Indonesia, especially in developing a multicultural counselling model that is more relevant to the local cultural context and spiritual values. By combining traditional principles with a modern approach, this study helps build a more holistic and morally grounded counselling model. This research enriches the literature on multicultural guidance and counselling, while offering an alternative indigenous approach that is more appropriate to Indonesian society. Abstract

Creativity is recognised as a critical skill for 21st-century learners, yet its development remains limited in elementary school literature classes, which are still dominated by conventional and non-contextual teaching methods. This study examines how contextual literature instruction, grounded in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) framework, can foster creativity among primary school students. A quantitative survey method was employed, involving 80 fifth-grade students from a public school in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, who were selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected through a 35-item Likert-scale questionnaire and classroom observations based on five creativity indicators: fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration, and imagination. Descriptive analysis showed high levels of imagination (84.2%) and active participation (85.4%), with lower outcomes in originality (75.6%) and creative collaboration (77.5%). These results indicate that STEAM-based literature learning effectively promotes student engagement, imagination, and expression, although it still requires strategies to foster individual innovation and teamwork. The study offers practical implications for educators and policymakers, including the need for teacher training in interdisciplinary pedagogy and the development of infrastructure that supports ethical, inclusive, and creative use of technology in elementary education. Abstract

Indonesian language learning in elementary schools often struggles to enhance students’ motivation and competence, with conventional memorization-focused approaches proving ineffective. This study examined the effectiveness of a neuropedagogical approach, grounded in neuroscience and brain-based learning principles, on motivation and language competence. Using a quasi-experimental design, 70 fourth-grade students were assigned to experimental and control groups. The intervention applied multisensory activities, movement-integrated learning, emotional anchoring, and metacognitive reflection. Data from validated tests on reading, writing, speaking, listening, and motivation were analyzed using t-tests and n-gain scores. The experimental group achieved a high n-gain (0.76) compared to the control group (0.04), indicating significant improvement. Findings suggest integrating teacher training and curricula with brain-compatible strategies to foster intrinsic motivation and linguistic competence. This research highlights the potential of neuroscience-informed instruction to optimize language learning outcomes, with future studies recommended to explore long-term effects and broader implementation. Abstract

Civic education at the primary level in Indonesia often lacks effectiveness due to conventional instructional methods that fail to engage students meaningfully or foster participatory civic dispositions. The existing literature rarely explores integrative learning models that simultaneously address cognitive understanding and civic attitudes within a single framework. This quasi-experimental study investigates the effect of the Index Card Match (ICM) model on the learning outcomes and civic attitudes of fifth-grade students in civic education. Sixty students from Pekanbaru were divided into experimental and control groups, with pre- and post-tests administered. Data were analyzed using independent t-tests, showing statistically significant improvements in the experimental group for learning outcomes (p = 0.001) and civic attitudes (p = 0.003). The effect sizes were moderate to large, indicating statistical significance and meaningful pedagogical impact. The strength of this study lies in its integrated evaluation of cognitive and affective domains, demonstrating how structured collaborative activities foster deeper conceptual understanding and internalization of civic values such as responsibility, tolerance, and cooperation. These findings offer actionable insights for curriculum developers and teachers to adopt interactive learning models that reinforce academic content and character formation within the elementary civic education context. Abstract

Observation skills and curiosity are crucial for elementary students’ learning, but remain underdeveloped in Indonesia, where PISA (2021) reported that 56% of students struggle to identify key information in texts. This quasi-experimental study involved 80 fourth-grade students, divided into two groups: experimental and control. Over four weeks, the experimental group received lessons that integrated Dual Coding (text-image pairing and color-coded diagrams) and Chunking (breaking content into small, thematic units)—a 25-item, validated test measured both skills. Results from independent t-tests showed significant improvements (p < 0.05) across all indicators, with an average score increase of 18% in the experimental group. These findings confirm that structured multimodal strategies enhance visual-verbal processing, analytical thinking, and exploratory motivation. Practically, the study suggests that primary school curricula should incorporate cognitively ergonomic techniques to foster deeper engagement and higher-order thinking, offering a replicable model for inclusive and practical instructional design. Abstract

Inclusive education has become a global priority, emphasizing the right of children with special needs (CSN) to receive quality education without discrimination. This study is motivated by the critical role of accurate assessment in designing effective learning for children with special needs (CSN). This research aims to evaluate the implementation of educational assessment for CSN at Aisyiyah Tembung Special Needs School and to identify the factors influencing its practice. A qualitative approach was employed, using content analysis of verbal, visual, and written documentation. The research subjects were educators teaching CSN at the school. The findings reveal that most teachers do not have a background in special education, but rather come from other disciplines such as mathematics, religion, physical education, and the arts. This lack of specialized training affects the accuracy of assessment practices, as teachers struggle to identify the individual needs of CSN comprehensively. The study underscores the urgent need for targeted training programs to equip non-specialist educators with adaptive assessment skills. The main contribution of this research lies in highlighting the importance of strengthening assessment competencies among general educators within the context of inclusive education, as a strategic step toward improving the quality of educational services for children with special needs. Keywords: assessment mechanism, educators in special schools, children with special needs
