Abstract

This study explores the portrayal of liberal feminism in Nancy Springer's Enola Holmes series, focusing on how the narrative challenges societal perceptions of women's intellectual and physical capabilities. Liberal feminism, rooted in the first wave of feminism, emphasizes equality through legal reforms and individual rights. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze Enola Holmes, highlighting the character's defiance of Victorian societal norms. Enola's rejection of traditional schooling and pursuit of autonomy underscore themes of gender equality and personal freedom. Supported by her mother, Eudoria Holmes, Enola embodies resilience and self-determination, advocating for women's rights to define their identities independently. Through qualitative analysis of dialogues and actions, this study illuminates how Enola Holmes champions liberal feminist ideals of gender equality and individual empowerment. The findings reveal Enola as a transformative figure challenging patriarchal constraints, inspiring reflection on gender roles and advocating for societal change towards equality and personal fulfillment.

An adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel, "It Ends with Us" centers on domestic violence and the characters Ryle Kincaid and Lily Bloom. Considering the increasing prevalence of domestic violence in society, this research intends to examine how the film violates the maxims of the cooperative principle by using qualitative research techniques to determine the most frequent violations. The data for this study are gathered and analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method. The study examines flouting maxim in a movie using Grice's (1975) approach. It demonstrates how character routinely break the rule of relations by talking about unrelated subjects. Additionally, the maxim of manner is regularly broken, frequently in tandem with maxim of relation. There are 28 findings of flouting the quality maxim and 18 data of violating the quantity maxim.

However, participants showed lack of self-efficacy in the two statements in strength dimension, feeling comfortable to help their students learning English and teaching English is not frustrating. On going professional developments are needed, such as regular workshop and English proficiency test for teachers to improve ECE teachers’ self-efficacy in teaching English for young learners.

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is an innovative teaching approach that combines content subject with language learning. It is essential to explore students' socio-affective perceptions of the implementation of this approach because these perceptions can influence their learning experience and outcome. This study aims to explore students’ socio-affective perceptions of 11th grade senior high school students at MAN 2 Kudus regarding the use of CLIL in science class. In this study, researchers used qualitative methods with open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The participants were 27 students in the 11th grade of XI-5 at MAN 2 Kudus. The results show that students’ attitudes in CLIL-based Science class, such as confidence, comfort, motivation, and participation, are influenced by their English proficiency. Those with higher English proficiency tend to feel more confident, motivated, and participative in the classroom, while those with lower proficiency have more challenges and participate less. Despite these challenges, most students had a positive perception of the use of the CLIL approach. They believe that it helps enhance their English skills, significantly improving their vocabulary.

Abstract

English is becoming essential in this quickly changing world because it is crucial for practically every aspect of life, especially communication. Speaking skills is a foundation for being able to communicate in English. However, many students still find it challenging to practice speaking English because it is not the mother tongue in Indonesia. This study investigated students' difficulties and the factors that cause them in English speaking practice. 80 students of Grade 10 Accounting students at SMK PGRI 2 Kudus were the participants in this study. A qualitative method was applied and the data of this study were collected through questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The questionnaire results revealed that students have difficulties in English practice; inhibition, nothing to say, low participation, and mother tongue use with "nothing to say" as the dominant difficulty. The factors that cause these difficulties include clustering (difficulty arranging sentences), redundancy (not knowing to explain correctly), still unfamiliar with the reduced form, low speaking performance, lack of vocab and not understanding what others are saying, low rate of delivery, and difficulty in pronunciation, stress, and intonation with clustering as the dominant factor. Regarding the dominant difficulty and its factor in the result of this study, the researcher suggests that teachers should always introduce new vocabulary daily so that students' vocabulary continues to increase. Moreover, the teacher should give the students an easy way to construct good sentences in speaking because they are still confused about arranging a correct sentence when practicing speaking.
