Abstract

Musculoskeletal pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with real or potential damage to musculoskeletal tissue. Musculoskeletal pain such as low back pain, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can develop into chronic pain when it lasts more than 3 months. Chronic pain and psychological well-being are very closely related; chronic pain adversely affects psychological well-being and decreases the quality of life, on the contrary, psychological well-being also affects the subjective feeling of pain felt by the patient. Therefore, the treatment of musculoskeletal pain should be carried out comprehensively, not only with medication but also with physical exercise, so as not to proceed into chronic pain. After participating in this activity, the community is expected to have a sufficient understanding of musculoskeletal pain, psychological aspects of pain, and exercise programs that can be done independently at home to treat pain.

Abstract

Abstract

Leprosy is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae. Leprosy infects skin, mucosa and peripheral nerves causing loss of skin sensation with or without skin lesions. Clinical feature of leprosy is highly variable, and can resemble a variety of lesions present in other diseases. Differential diagnosis of skin lesions is so broad that it can lead to misdiagnosis. Based on data from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2018, it was reported that the number of new cases of leprosy in the world was 210,671 cases, with a new case detection rate of 2.77 per 100,000 population. Indonesia is ranked third in the world as a country with the most new cases of leprosy after India and Brazil. Lack of knowledge of health workers and cadres affects the number of leprosy cases found. This community service activity was carried out with the aim of providing counseling regarding early leprosy examination to health workers and cadres in Prabumulih. The activity was coordinated by Dermatology, Venereology, and Aesthetics Department, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University, in collaboration with AR Bunda Hospital Prabumulih. At the end of the activity the participants had a better understanding of leprosy and the steps for early leprosy examination. This activity is useful for increasing the knowledge of health workers and cadres about leprosy and how to check for leprosy.

The number of cases of pulmonary tuberculosis found and reported was only 443,235. There are still around 500,000 cases that have not been discovered and reported. Co-morbidities such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus are also diseases that are often encountered but are often ignored when they are still in their early phases. Hypertension and diabetes mellitus in pulmonary tuberculosis patients can adversely affect treatment outcomes. Tuberculosis cadres can play an important role in increasing pulmonary tuberculosis case detection and the early detection of comorbidities. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the effectiveness of tuberculosis cadres in Palembang in order to achieve an increase in case detection and comorbidities. Through the tuberculosis cadre organization, Sriwijaya Healthy Society, 15 tuberculosis cadres were given counseling with enrichment on case finding and early detection of hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Through questionnaires before and after counseling, an increased understanding of tuberculosis case detection and early detection of hypertension and diabetes mellitus was obtained, with an average score before 56.7 and an average score after 91.3. Simulated training on the early detection of hypertension and diabetes mellitus was also carried out so that the cadres could apply it to the community.

Participants get Shutterstock images and videos from YouTube that have been selected to be used as teaching material in class. The participants' reflections after this activity were that they were able to connect the material with everyday life; Participants can relate the topic of cells to the topics of organ systems, cell metabolism, and genetic material in the biology curriculum for junior high and senior high schools; they were not confused that cell division is actually part of the stages of the cell cycle. Recommendations for further activities from the participants are that this activity will be held again with the topic of the relationship between cells and disease and that it is necessary to measure the participants' knowledge, and need to evaluate the benefits of these images and videos after being applied in class.

Abstract

The prevalence of non-communicable diseases tends to increase from time to time. Surveillance is one of efforts to control non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This service activity aims to increase knowledge and understanding of cadres regarding the importance of implementing community-based surveillance, measure risk factors for NCDs in the elderly, and increase community knowledge and understanding regarding efforts to prevent NCDs. The main activities in this service are strengthening cadres regarding NCDs surveillance, measuring risk factors, and nutrition education. The cadre strengthening activities were attended by 4 elderly posyandu cadres, 30 pre-elderly and elderly people participated in the measurement of NCDs risk factors, and 30 pre-elderly and elderly nutrition education participants. The results of NCDs risk factor measurement show that the majority of risk factor proportions are in the red category (alert) such as hypertension (80%), hyperglycemia (20%), obesity (60%), and high cholesterol (53.3%). Evaluation of nutrition education activities showed that there were significant differences in the average knowledge before and after the educational activities, with an increase in the average knowledge score after education of 2.292. The community is basically very enthusiastic about all the activities that have been held. NCDs risk factor data that has been collected in this activity can be used by policy makers as a basis for making decisions and needs support from the health office, puskesmas, village midwife, and village officials in activating posbindu activities in Burai Village such as measuring NCDs risk factors on a regular basis (recommended at least once every 6 months) in order to monitor and control NCDs risk factors and conduct NCDs education.
