Abstract

Environmental problems pose serious challenges, necessitating urgent action to prevent further damage. Implementing environmental education in junior high schools can engage students in maintaining and preventing environmental harm both within schools and communities. This study aims to evaluate how social studies teachers in Junior High Schools in Sukoharjo Regency implement environmental education and identify their obstacles. Employing a qualitative approach, the research describes data obtained through triangulation techniques, with analysis based on the Miles and Huberman model. Findings reveal that, as of 2022, 36 junior high schools in Sukoharjo Regency have been awarded the Adiwiyata program, categorized into four levels: 33 district-level, 21 provincial-level, four national-level, and four independent-level schools. Positive environmental impacts include maintained cleanliness, reduced pollution, and minimized environmental damage. However, challenges persist, such as limited funding, insufficient quality of human resources, and constrained space. These obstacles hinder the effective implementation of environmental education, underscoring the need for targeted support and resources to enhance program effectiveness.

Abstract

Community engagement (CE) is a necessary teacher competency. Given its importance, this research aims to assess the self-perceptions of Filipino teachers on their CE competency and see if there are significant differences in their assessment based on different factors. Using a researcher-made survey, teacher participants were asked to rate how well they demonstrated each action statement in the instruments based on their perception of their community engagement competency from the School Year 2019 – 2020. Comparisons on the total community engagement scores were then compared based on the school type, grade level assignment, and length of teaching service. Results showed that Filipino teacher survey respondents (n=31) perceived themselves to be able to demonstrate the identified CE behavioral indicators, and their identified highest and lowest-rated behavioral indicators may be used as a springboard for further training needs analyses for CE professional development inputs. Statistical analyses showed no significant differences in the CE scores of the respondents based on all the identified factor groupings. This study aims to contribute to measuring CE competency among Filipino teachers.

Abstract

The study explored the social constructivist practices and experiences in teaching social constructivist strategies of Junior High School Social Studies teachers. The study used a qualitative single exploratory case study. Thirteen Social Studies teachers who were purposely selected based on the results of the pre-assessment survey participated to share their social constructivist practices and experiences. Interviews, classroom observation, lesson plans, and FGD were used in this research to collect data, and a thematic three-phase analysis was done. Based on the findings, the Social Studies teacher's social constructivist teaching practices in terms of teaching, assessment, and resources meet the needs of students and give them opportunities to express their constructions of knowledge, interact in social groups, give students a chance to correct their wrong constructions and broaden their construction of knowledge through various resources. The evolved experiences are essential to improving the teaching and learning process, such as misconceptions about social constructivist strategies, lowering students’ interactions in flexible learning, and high engagement of students’ learning. Thus, the Magtayo instructional framework is designed to serve as a guide for employing social constructivist strategies.
