The Akit tribe in Bengkalis has undergone significant socio-cultural transformations in the era of globalization. This study explores the complex processes through which the Akit community navigates changes in their identity, traditions, and social structures. The research examines the impact of global influences on local customs by investigating how external pressures and internal dynamics have reshaped the tribe's cultural landscape. Through a comprehensive analysis of historical and contemporary data, the study highlights the resilience and adaptability of the Akit people in preserving their heritage while integrating new cultural elements. Abstract

This study aims to investigate the deep historical connections between Minangkabau and Negeri Sembilan, two regions with rich cultural heritage in the archipelago. We explore the traces of this heritage to uncover the historical significance of Minangkabau in the formation and development of Negeri Sembilan's culture. The research method involved in-depth historical analyses as well as a careful literature review, which helped us understand the influence that Minangkabau culture has had on the social structure, customary system, values and traditions of the people of Negeri Sembilan. Our results show that this historical footprint reflects not only cultural adoption, but also the complex interaction between Minangkabau and Negeri Sembilan, which has shaped a rich and unique cultural identity in the history of the archipelago. Research findings reveal the deep-rooted nature of this cultural relationship, starting from the early arrival of Minangkabau people in Negeri Sembilan during the 15th and 16th centuries, to diplomatic relations with Raja Mahmud of Pagaruyung in 1773. The historical significance of Minangkabau in Negeri Sembilan culture has important relevance in understanding the cultural dynamics of the region.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the feminist movement in Indonesia in the early 20th century. This research employed the historical method, encompassing several key stages. Heuristics involved the systematic gathering of relevant sources, including articles, books and existing research related to the study. Subsequently, source criticism was conducted to assess the authenticity, reliability and credibility of the identified sources. Following this, the interpretation stage involved analyzing the collected data to extract meaningful insights and draw conclusions. Finally, the findings were combined and presented in a scholarly format through the writing of a research paper. In addition, the author collects data through the Dutch website (Delpher) which is a website that provides digitized full texts of newspapers, books, journals, and copy sheets of historic Dutch-language radio news broadcasts. The research reveals that the Indonesian feminist movement arose in response to the injustices faced by women during Dutch colonial rule in the East Indies. A key example of this inequality was the restricted access to education for women compared to their male counterparts. This disparity spurred the emergence of the feminist movement, driven by the goal of securing equal rights for women.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the role of Medan Prijaji, a newspaper founded by Tirto Adhi Soerjo in 1907, in the anti-colonial movement during the period 1907-1914. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a critical historical approach through literature study. The research results show that Medan Prijaji not only functions as a medium of information but also as a symbolic public space that enables socio-political mobilization. This newspaper became a catalyst in voicing criticism against colonialism and building community solidarity to achieve social change. These findings also highlight the importance of Medan Prijaji as a cultural resistance tool in facing cultural homogenization due to colonial domination. This research makes an important contribution to the study of socio-political history, particularly regarding the role of media in building resistance and solidarity. Moreover, these findings are relevant for understanding the potential of modern media as a tool of resistance in the current context of globalization.

Abstract

The gallantry of the people of Surabaya in resisting Allied forces in 10th November 1945 led the government to designate that date as Heroes’ Day. Various ceremonies are held and monuments are built to preserving the memory of the battle. However, the construction of this historical memory is not without its own interests. This research examines how historical memory of the Battle of Surabaya was constructed throughout the administration of Sukarno and Suharto, why the memory was erected and what aspect was deliberately forgotten. Employing historical methodology, this research shows Sukarno leveraged these historical narrtives to foster nationalism and enhance Indonenisa’s international standing. Under the regime of Suharto, the construction of historical memory was similarly used to promote his political agendas, spread anti-communism and legitimate military role. Both regimes sought to conceal the killings of civilians and the disparities between central administration and local Surabaya residents due to beliefs that it would undermine nationalism and heroic narrative.

Abstract

Sufism is a spiritual dimension of Islam that grew out of the early Islamic tradition of asceticism, where the companions and followers of the Prophet lived simply to draw closer to God. This research explores the historical development of Sufism from the 3rd to the 6th centuries of the Islamic calender, focusing such as Hasan al-Basri, Rabi’ah al-Adawiyah, Al-Junaid al-Baghdadi and Al-Ghazali played significant roles in shaping Sufism, emphasizing a balance between spirituality and Islamic law. From the 6th to the 11th centuries, Sufism became institutionalized through various Sufi orders like Qadiriyya and Naqshabandiyya, which spread Islam to regions like the Indonesian archipelago. These orders effectively combined Islamic teachings with local cultures. While some criticized Sufism for deviating from Islamic law, reformers like Shaykh Ahmad Sirhindi ensured its continued relevance. Today, Sufism offers spiritual solutions to modern challenges such as materialism and individualism, guiding Muslims toward a deeper connection with God. Sufi teachings not only purify the soul but also strengthen morality and promote social harmony.

Abstract

This research reveals the socioeconomic conditions of Majapahit society through the roofing materials of houses in the Majapahit Kingdom. The primary data consists of stroke patterns on the roof of miniature terracotta artifacts. The shape of the strokes applied to the roof suggests the type of roofing material. This research employs mixed methods. Quantitative method was used for clustering, while qualitative method was used to analyse each material individually. Production theory guided the data analysis to determine the economic level described through materials, considering factors such as: (1) overall material quality, (2) raw materials availability and accessibility and (3) production process complexity. Clustering analysis results of 183 miniature house terracotta artifacts revealed five types of strokes: (1) asymmetric strokes, likely depicting palm fibre material (Ijuk), (2) flat vertical strokes, suggesting wood plank material, (3) cylindrical vertical strokes, indicating bamboo material, (4) square sheets representing shingle or tile material, and (5) unidentified strokes. Unidentified strokes (≤18%) are representing unique artistic expressions or the absence of strokes, showcasing the creativity of terracotta craftsmen. The observed roofing materials provide insights about three economic levels within Majapahit society. Palm fibre and bamboo roofs likely indicate the lower-middle-class dwellings, plank and wood roofs suggest lower or upper-middle-class status and finally (3) shingle and tile roofs indicate upper-middle class.

Abstract

Munawatul Khair Arabic School is one of the madrasah that played pivotal role in the history of Islamic education in Lampung during 1930-1950. This madrasah began in Tanjung Agugn, Bengkulu in 1925, founded by K.H. Hosen bin Abd Syukur. The madrasah is centered in Tanjung Karang, Bandar Lampung in 1930. This study is a form of literature research using historical and philosophical approach. The data source was collected from primary and secondary data. Primary data of this study is based on the records of the madrasah. While secondary data was similar researches from other researchers. This research used historical method, (1) Heuristic: data collection from primary and secondary data, (2) Criticism source, related criticism given internally or externally, (3) Interpretation involves combining various data sources to interpret a study, (4) Historiography, the historian’s endeavor to reconstruct a history by writing it into a research. The result of this study aims to enrich the value of education history, especially Islamic education in Lampung, focusing on the significant role of Madrasah Munawatul Khair Arabic School as a leading institutionof its time. Little history is yet to be discovered regarding education in Lampung, specifically detailing the development of education in Lampung. The establishment of Munawatul Khair Arabic School in Lampung and Bengkulu provided Islamic education for the indigenous people of Indonesia. This action was particularly significant given the limited access to Islamic education during the colonial and post-colonial eras. While little impact this madrasah had provided globally, its influence was felt locally, especially among marginalized communities who had limited access to government-run schools during that period.
