Abstract

Efforts to increase rice production in the highlands which are hampered by cold temperatures continue to be made, one of which is by developing new varieties that are able to adapt to these conditions. The aim of this research was to test genetic diversity, heritability values, and test the performance of agronomic characters of several new types of F6 black and red rice resulting from crosses. This research was carried out in rainfed rice fields in Barana' Hamlet, Tikala District, North Toraja Regency at an altitude of 855 m above sea level. This research took place from May 2023 to December 2024. The planting material used in this research consisted of 6 promising F6 lines of black and red rice as well as the comparisons Inpari 4, Pare Lea, Pare Ambo and Pare Lallodo. This panel research was structured in the form of a randomized block design (RAK) with 3 replications so that there were 18 experimental plots. Each plot consists of 6 planting rows. The variables observed consisted of agronomic character components and organoleptic tests. Data analysis used analysis of variance (Anova) and the BNJ test level was 0.05. The results of the research show that the value of genetic diversity and phenotypic character of the new types of black and red F6 rice lines shows narrow criteria. The characteristics of the number of grain contents per panicle, weight of 100 seeds, panicle length and number of productive tillers had the best genetic diversity coefficient values. All the characters of the new black and red types of F6 rice lines have broad heritability values and high KGH. UKIT101-2-278-4, UKIT105-2-042-3 and UKIT105-2-042-5 lines had the best agronomic characteristics in terms of harvested dry grain weight per hectare, number of filled grains per panicle and number of productive tillers. UKIT101-2-278-2 and UKIT101-2-278-4 strains have rice in the criteria of the best taste and aroma.

Abstract

This research is about the application of edible coating chitosan with various concentrations on the quality of strawberry. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of using chitosan as edible coating on the physical, chemical and microbiological properties of strawberries stored at cold temperatures and determine the appropriate concentration for making edible coating solutions to maintain the physical, chemical and microbiological properties of strawberries. This research used experimental method was a CRD with one factor (chitosan concentration) with 4 levels (level 1 = 0%; level 2 = 1%; level 3 = 2%; and level 4 = 3%) which was applied to strawberries. The analysis carried out in this research were weight loss, water content, TSS, TPC and total mold. The data of physical and chemical property tests were analyzed statistically using ANOVA. If there was significantly different, continued by Tukey’s HSD test at 5% level. Based on the research results, it was concluded that the use of chitosan as an edible coating had an effect on chemical and microbiological properties but had no effect on the physical properties of strawberries stored at cold temperatures and coating of 3% chitosan on strawberries for 12 days of cold storage was able to inhibit weight loss (6,15%), to inhibit the decrease of water content (90,61%), to inhibit the increase of TSS (7,3 oBrix), to inhibit the increase of TPC (1,7 x 105 CFU/g) and to inhibit the increase of total mold (3,6 x 104 CFU/g) compared to lower chitosan concentrations.

Abstract

Edible coating as one of the post-harvest solutions can be applied as it is safely eaten, covers surface scratches, and gives lustre coating to the strawberries. This study aims to determine the effect of different concentrations of carrageenan as edible coating on the physical, chemical, and microbiological properties of strawberries and to identify the best carrageenan concentration treatment as edible coating so it could retain the physical, chemical, and microbiological properties of strawberries. This research employed 1-factor Completely Randomised Design (CRD), consisting of different concentrations of carrageenan into 4 levels: level 1 = no treatment, level 2 = 2%, level 3 = 2.5%, and level 4 = 3%. Testing parameters were shrinking weight, moisture content, total soluble solids, Total Plate Count (TPC), and Yeast Mould Count (YMC). The results of analysis of variance at the 5% level reveal that carrageenan concentration has very significant effect on shrinking weight, moisture content, total soluble solids, Total Plate Count, and Yeast Mould Count. The treatment of 3% carrageenan concentration yields the best results with shrinking weight (5.2%), moisture content (90.46%), total soluble solids (8.2 oBrix), Total Plate Count 5,2log CFU/g (1,6x105 CFU/g), and Yeast Mould Count 4,2log CFU/g (1,6x104 CFU/g).

Abstract

Demersal fish live on the bottom of rocky, sandy, muddy, and craggy ocean with low mobility. Heavy metals settle to the bottom of waters since they have a greater specific gravity than seawater, resulting in a greater chance of entering the body of fish through the food chain process so that they can accumulate. This study aims to analyse the levels of heavy metals lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in the liver, kidney, and meat organs of demersal fish in Lamongan Regency. Descriptive research with purposive sampling method is employed in this research. Analysis of heavy metal levels was conducted using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. The maximum limit of lead and cadmium in SNI 2729:2013 is 0.3 mg/kg and 0.1 mg/kg. Liver, kidney, and meat organs in 10 demersal fish species were positive for lead contamination, yet the levels did not exceed the limit. Liver, kidney, and meat organs in 10 types of demersal fish were positively contaminated with cadmium; in meat, there was 1 type of fish (10%) exceeding the limit, namely kuniran fish at 0.170 mg/kg; in the liver, there were 5 types of fish (50%) exceeding the limit, namely senangin fish at 0.124 mg/kg, swanggi fish at 0.129 mg/kg, spiny fish at 0.116 mg/kg, snapper fish at 0.103 mg/kg, and stingray at 0.101 mg/kg; and in the kidney, there were 4 fish species (40%) exceeding the limit, namely grouper at 0.169 mg/kg, kuniran fish at 0.129 mg/kg, kurisi fish at 0.117 mg/kg, and spiny fish at 0.109 mg/kg

Abstract

Coffee downstreaming in Indonesia is supported by the government based on various policies that encourage aspects of production, productivity, and competitiveness in an effort to improve export quality. The downstreaming policy in Indonesia provides opportunities for the coffee industry in Indonesia to increase competitiveness in both the domestic and international markets. Indirectly, this policy is also expected to improve the welfare of farmers at the local level. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to determine whether the coffee downstreaming policy can improve coffee farmers at the local level, as well as policy recommendations in improving the welfare of these coffee farmers. The method used in answering the objectives of this article uses literature studies related to coffee production, downstreaming policies, added value, value chains, coffee competitiveness, and related agricultural policies explained using the Tinbergen framework approach. It was found that the coffee downstreaming policy did not have a direct impact on farmers, but rather on the coffee processing industry in Indonesia. The fairly long supply chain causes the downstreaming policy to have an indirect impact on farmers. The success of this downstreaming policy requires synergy between agricultural stakeholders in improving farmer welfare, namely: central and regional governments, industry, traders, financial institutions, cooperatives and farmer associations. The success of this policy is an increase in productivity, an increase in product quality, and wider market access.

Abstract

In today’s modern era, public awareness of healthy living is steadily increasing. One of the key aspects of maintaining health is the consumption of fruits and vegetables, which serve as vital sources of essential nutrients. The growing demand reflects an increasing societal awareness of the importance of incorporating fruits and vegetables into a healthy diet. However, consumers' purchasing decisions regarding organic products are influenced by specific factors. This study aims to analyze the level of consumer awareness and the determinants influencing the purchase decisions of organic fruits and vegetables in modern markets across Surabaya City. Data were collected from 385 respondents using accidental sampling at eight modern markets. Consumer awareness was measured using a Likert Scale based on five key indicators: knowledge, attitude, consumption behavior, willingness to pay, and accessibility. Factor analysis was conducted using PLS-SEM. The results show that 39.74% of respondents had a very high level of awareness and 60.26% had a high level of awareness regarding organic products, particularly among individuals aged over 55 and those with an income above IDR 6,000,000. This awareness is reflected in consumers’ understanding of the health and environmental benefits of organic products. Path analysis revealed that personal preference, health knowledge, price, availability, income, and location significantly influenced purchasing decisions. In contrast, product quality and taste were not significant, likely due to the limited variety of organic products available in modern markets. These findings highlight the dominance of practical and contextual factors in purchasing decisions, indicating that accessibility and affordability play a more decisive role than intrinsic product attributes in markets with limited options. Abstract

The implementation of the circular economy concept in the local shallot supply chain of the Rubaru variety still faces various obstacles that need to be overcome. The aim of this research is to determine the level of understanding of the parties involved in the Rubaru variety shallot supply chain regarding the circular economy concept, evaluate its implementation, and formulate strategies that can accelerate the circular economy in the Rubaru variety local shallot supply chain. This research is dominated by qualitative descriptive analysis research supported by SWOT analysis. The research results show that the level of understanding and application of the circular economy concept of parties involved in the Rubaru variety of shallot supply chain is still low because the term circular economy is relatively new. But farmers, agro-industry and household consumers are already implementing simple recycling and reuse concepts. The strategy to accelerate the implementation of a circular economy in the Rubaru variety of red onion supply chain requires increasing synergy between the parties involved, especially in terms of collaboration between farmers, traders, agro-industry and consumers. The development of derivative products such as fried onions, organic fertilizer, bioenergy and shallot paste opens up great opportunities to increase the economic value of shallots while reducing waste.
