Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of demotivation in essay writing among pre-service English teachers at UIN Palangka Raya. Academic writing is often perceived as difficult by EFL learners due to limited vocabulary, weak grammar, and challenges in organizing ideas, which reduce students’ confidence (Baehaqi, 2023). Moreover, even teachers tend to avoid academic writing because of insufficient knowledge and low confidence (Qamariah et al., 2023). Using a qualitative phenomenological design (Moustakas, 1994), data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten students who had completed essay writing courses and analyzed through epoche, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and synthesis of meanings and essences. The findings revealed seven themes of demotivation: language-related anxiety, unclear instruction and passive teaching style, loss of autonomy and relevance gap, time pressure and preparation gap, class format and timing issues, coping strategies, and supportive teaching as motivator. Both internal and external factors contributed to demotivation, yet students managed to cope through peer collaboration, self-regulation, and online resources, while supportive teaching emerged as a key factor in restoring motivation. This study contributes to the understanding of demotivation in EFL essay writing and underscores the importance of empathetic, autonomy-supportive, and process-oriented teaching practices in sustaining student engagemen.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of communication and punishment on employee performance with work discipline as an intervening variable at PT PLN (Persero) UP3 Pematangsiantar. The research method used is quantitative with the Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. The study population was all 117 permanent employees of PT PLN (Persero) UP3 Pematangsiantar who also served as research samples. The results showed that communication had a positive and significant effect on employee performance and work discipline. Punishment also had a positive and significant effect on employee performance and work discipline. In addition, work discipline was proven to have a positive and significant effect on employee performance. Other findings showed that work discipline played a role as an intervening variable in the relationship between communication and performance, as well as the relationship between punishment and employee performance. The R-square value of work discipline was 0.844 and employee performance was 0.863, which means that this research model has strong explanatory power. The practical implications of this research are the need for company management to clarify superior instructions, socialize punishment rules, especially those related to layoffs, in a transparent manner, improve work discipline development, and provide more training and trust to employees so that they are able to work independently.

Abstract

Newtonian mechanics remains a fundamental yet conceptually challenging domain for high school students. Numerous studies have shown that students consistently hold alternative conceptions that contradict scientific understanding, particularly in relation to Newton’s laws of motion. This study aimed to explore senior high school students’ misconceptions in Newtonian mechanics through a qualitative investigation. Data were collected from 28 Grade 11 students in an Indonesian high school using open-ended diagnostic tests, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. Thematic coding identified four major categories of misconceptions: inertia, force–motion relationships, action–reaction interactions, and free-body diagram representations. Among these, misconceptions of Newton’s third law were the most dominant, with the majority of students believing that the object with greater mass exerts a greater force during interaction. Inertia misconceptions, such as the belief that motion requires continuous force, were also widespread. The findings confirm that students’ misconceptions are robust cognitive frameworks reinforced by everyday experiences and traditional teaching practices. Pedagogically, the results highlight the importance of incorporating inquiry-based learning, multiple representations, and cognitive conflict strategies to promote conceptual change. This study contributes to the literature on physics education by providing context-specific insights into persistent misconceptions in Newtonian mechanics and suggesting implications for more effective teaching practices.
