Abstract

Background: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a median nerve compression neuropathy within the carpal tunnel characterized by pain, paresthesia, sensory disturbances, muscle weakness, and decreased hand function. This condition is commonly found in individuals with repetitive gripping activities and may significantly affect daily functional activities and quality of life. Conservative physiotherapy management is recommended as a first-line intervention for mild to moderate CTS before surgical treatment. Objective: This case report aims to evaluate the effectiveness of conservative physiotherapy management in a patient with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome at Universitas Sebelas Maret Hospital (RS UNS) in 2025. Methods: This study employed a case report design involving a 61-year-old male patient diagnosed with CTS. Physiotherapy assessment included pain evaluation using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), range of motion measurement using a goniometer, muscle strength assessment with Manual Muscle Testing (MMT), Tinel test, and functional ability evaluation using the Wrist Hand Disability Index (WHDI). Physiotherapy diagnosis was established based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) framework. Conservative physiotherapy interventions consisted of infrared therapy, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), ultrasound, massage, stretching exercises, and strengthening exercises. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results: Initial assessment revealed moderate pain, limited palmar flexion range of motion, decreased wrist muscle strength, sensory disturbances, and functional disability with a WHDI score of 30%, categorized as moderate disability. Following conservative physiotherapy intervention, the patient demonstrated clinical improvements including pain reduction, increased comfort during wrist movement, and enhanced hand functional ability. Conclusion: Multimodal conservative physiotherapy management was effective in reducing pain, improving wrist function, and enhancing activity and participation in a patient with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This approach represents a safe and evidence-based option for the initial management of CTS.

Abstract

Spinal medulla tumors tend to metastasize to the spine, so it is common for patients with these tumors to experience neurological problems such as paraplegia and muscle weakness. This final scientific paper aims to provide holistic nursing care using a nursing process approach for patients with spinal medulla tumors in Room Raudhah 5 at Dr. Zainoel Abidin General Hospital, Banda Aceh. The nursing process is divided into preoperative and postoperative stages. During the assessment phase, it was noted that the patient complained of lower back pain, inability to walk, and had not had a bowel movement for three days (preoperative), and later reported pain at the postoperative site with a pain scale of 7 on the NRS, along with a postoperative laminectomy wound, limited movement, and elevated leukocyte levels (postoperative). Nursing diagnoses included acute pain, disturbance of physical mobility, skin integrity issues, constipation, and risk of infection. Interventions involved deep breathing relaxation techniques, pain distraction through Quran recitation, finger hold technique, passive ROM exercises, a high-fiber diet, abdominal massage, and sterile wound care. In the evaluation stage, after four days of preoperative care and one day postoperative, it was found that issues such as acute pain, mobility disturbances, constipation, and skin integrity problems had been resolved. It is hoped that nurses can educate and train patients and families to independently perform interventions like pain management and passive ROM exercises at home, ensuring continuous care and supporting optimal recovery.

Abstract

Dietary adherence among patients with diabetes mellitus is a key determinant of successful diabetes management. Dietary management is a self-directed approach that can help prevent complications in patients with diabetes mellitus. Factors such as negative perceptions of diet, weak social support from family, and self-care management influence patients’ adherence to their diet. This study aims to determine the relationship between dietary perceptions (vulnerability, severity, and benefits), family support, and self-care management on dietary compliance among patients with diabetes mellitus at the Mekar Community Health Center in Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi. This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 136 respondents selected using consecutive sampling. The dependent variable in this study was dietary compliance, while the independent variables were dietary perceptions (perceived sussceptibility, perceived severity, and perceived benefits), family support, and self-care management. Descriptive analysis revealed that 88 respondents adhered to the diet, while 48 respondents did not adhere to the diabetes diet. Data analysis was performed using bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test at a significance level of α = 0.05. The results of the study showed that there was a significant relationship between perceived severity (p-value = 0.036), perceived benefits (p-value = 0.006), family support (p-value = 0.046), and self-care management (p-value = 0.036) with dietary adherence in patients with diabetes mellitus. However, there was no significant relationship between perceived vulnerability and dietary compliance (p-value = 0.547). Based on these results, it can be concluded that the factors of perceived severity, perceived benefits, family support, and self-care management play a role in improving patients’ dietary compliance. Therefore, educational interventions focused on enhancing positive perceptions of the diet and strengthening family support are needed to improve patients’ adherence to the diet.

Abstract

Waste management is an environmental issue that requires active community participation, including students as agents of change. One effective approach is the implementation of a Waste Bank, which not only reduces waste generation but also increases environmental awareness through the 3R practice. Good knowledge of waste management is believed to encourage more positive behavior, so this study aims to analyze the relationship between increased knowledge and waste management behavior among students majoring in Environmental Health at the Padang Ministry of Health Polytechnic. The study used a cross-sectional design with 140 students as samples through total sampling. Data were obtained using a questionnaire that was measured. knowledge before and after the educational intervention as well as waste management behavior. The analysis was performed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test. The results showed that of the 78 students who experienced an increase in knowledge, 57 (73.1%) had good waste management behavior. Meanwhile, in the group of students whose knowledge level remained the same (62 students), only 35 people (56.5%) exhibited good behavior. This finding indicates that students who experienced an increase in knowledge tended to have better waste management behavior than those who did not experience any change in knowledge. The Chi-Square test showed a p-value of 0.040, which means there is a significant relationship between increased knowledge and waste management behavior. In conclusion, increased knowledge contributes positively to students' waste management behavior. It is recommended that educational institutions strengthen education and the practice of waste banks on an ongoing basis, as well as develop collaborative programs to raise environmental awareness.

Abstract

Calamansi oranges are a good source of vitamin C with high content of 27.43/100 g. Calamansi oranges are commonly processed into calamansi syrup. Calamansi syrup is one of flagship products of Bengkulu City, but information regarding the vitamin C content is not listed on the product packaging. This study aims to compare the vitamin C content of calamansi syrup from various brands in Bengkulu City using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The study involves five samples of calamansi syrup from different brands. Qualitative analysis was conducted using 0.1% KMnO4, Iodine, and FeSO4 reagents, which showed that all five samples tested positive for containing vitamin C. The determination of the maximum wavelength was done at 265 nm with the regression equation y = 0.0659x + 0.0631 and R2 value of 0.9923. The vitamin C content obtained was 1.681% for Sample A, 5.880% for Sample B, 2.342% for Sample C, 1.979% for Sample D, and 2.478% for Sample E. The Kruskal-Wallis statistical analysis showed a significant difference among the samples (p < 0.05), indicating that the vitamin C content varies among the different brands. In conclusion, the five brands of calamansi syrup available in Bengkulu City contain vitamin C with varying levels.
