Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains a major public health concern, particularly in tropical regions such as Indonesia, where it has persisted for over five decades. In 2023, Samarinda ranked third among ten regencies or cities in East Kalimantan with the highest number of DHF cases. One of the primary health centers consistently ranking among the top three with the highest DHF cases in Samarinda from 2021 to 2023 is Temindung Public Health Center. Environmental conditions and community behavior are believed to play significant roles in the transmission of this disease. This study aimed to identify factors associated with DHF incidence, including the condition of water storage containers (TPA), lighting, the presence of mosquito larvae, and Mosquito Nest Eradication (PSN) behavior. A cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach was used, involving 138 respondents selected through purposive sampling within the working area of Temindung Public Health Center. Data were collected using questionnaires, direct observation, and lighting measurements, and analyzed using the Chi-square test. The results showed significant associations between the availability of TPA covers (p = 0.037), household lighting (p = 0.017), PSN behavior (p = 0.000), and the presence of mosquito larvae (p = 0.000) with DHF incidence. These factors are interrelated in increasing the risk of DHF transmission in residential areas. Proper management of water storage, adequate household lighting, mosquito larvae control, and improved PSN behavior are crucial in reducing DHF cases. Active involvement of both the community and public health centers is essential in implementing continuous and sustainable preventive measures.

Abstract

HIV/AIDS infection remains a public health challenge among Indonesian adolescents despite extensive educational efforts. This study presents a structured literature review (systematic review) following PRISMA guidelines to evaluate the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS education models in Youth Integrated Health Posts (Posyandu Remaja) from 2015 to 2025. Searches in Google Scholar identified four primary studies meeting inclusion criteria: two quantitative pre-post interventions with cadres and youth, one qualitative study, and one community service project. Findings indicate that interventions employing lectures, group discussions, informational leaflets, educational videos, and peer education enhanced adolescent knowledge scores by an average of 75 % and reduced the proportion of low-knowledge participants from 84% to zero after a brief session. Participatory approaches and collaboration with religious leaders and community institutions were key facilitators. Nevertheless, social stigma, limited cadre capacity, short program duration, and insufficient counseling facilities undermined long-term impact on actual behavior change, such as HIV testing uptake and consistent condom use. Consequently, this review recommends developing a comprehensive education module encompassing reproductive rights, sexual orientation diversity, the U = U concept, and psychosocial support; advanced cadre training; cross-sector integration; and digital technology utilization to ensure program sustainability and effectiveness.

Abstract

Human resource planning is essential to ensure the availability of a workforce that meets current and future service needs. In the health sector, the health workload analysis method is used to objectively evaluate human resource needs. This study was conducted at Mekar Sari Bekasi Hospital to determine the ideal number of medical record and health information officers. Currently there are 9 medical record officers, consisting of 4 people with PMIK (Medical Recorder and Health Information) education backgrounds and 5 non-PMIK people. Conditions in the field show that officers often get additional workloads when colleagues are absent, and even have to work overtime to get the job done on time. This study uses descriptive quantitative methods through direct observation and interviews. The results show that the available work time (WKT) is 1201 hours or 72,000 minutes per year. With a Supporting Task Factor (FTP) of 8% and a Supporting Task Standard (STP) of 1.09, the ideal HR requirement is 10 people. This requires the addition of 1 officer with a PMIK background, who will be placed in the assembling section. Meanwhile, 1 officer each from the coding and filing sections will be transferred to the filing section.

Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that remains a public health problem in Indonesia, including in the work area of the Oesapa Community Health Center in Kupang City. TB transmission occurs through droplets expelled when an infected person coughs or sneezes. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge and behaviors for preventing pulmonary TB transmission in TB patients. This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The population in this study was all adult pulmonary TB patients registered at the Oesapa Community Health Center in 2024, with a sample size of 70 individuals selected using a total sampling technique. The independent variables in this study included knowledge and attitudes, while the dependent variable was behavior related to preventing pulmonary TB transmission. Data were collected using a closed-ended questionnaire and analyzed univariately and bivariately using the chi-square test. The results showed that the majority of respondents (66.7%) exhibited poor prevention behavior. Furthermore, there was a significant relationship between knowledge (p=0.004) and attitude (p=0.004) and behavior related to preventing pulmonary TB transmission. The study concluded that prevention behavior is influenced by predisposing factors (knowledge and attitude), and aligns with Lawrence Green's theory. These results are expected to provide input for Community Health Centers (Puskesmas) in designing health promotion strategies and educational interventions to reduce the risk of TB transmission in the community.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the perceptions and intentions to quit smoking among adult smokers in the Special Region of Yogyakarta using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) approach. TPB is employed to identify how attitudes toward smoking, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control influence individuals’ intentions to quit smoking. This research uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, exploring the experiences and subjective meanings of the participants. The research subjects consist of four adult smokers selected purposively. Data collection techniques involved semi-structured interviews and observations, while data analysis used triangulation methods. The results indicate two differing perspectives regarding smoking: some subjects emphasized the negative impacts such as disease risk, physical fatigue, and financial losses that motivated their intention to quit, whereas others continued smoking for reasons of relaxation, stress reduction, and social interaction. The social environment was shown to play a dual role, both weakening and strengthening the motivation to quit depending on the prevailing norms. At the individual control level, subjects were influenced by internal factors such as stress and nicotine addiction, as well as external factors like social support and smoke-free zone policies.

Abstract

Public place sanitation requires serious attention because it is a gathering place for many people from various backgrounds. With the majority of Kupang City's population being Christian, churches, as places of worship, are one of the public places whose sanitation needs attention, especially those located in the Kelapa Lima District. Kelapa Lima District is located near the coast, making it prone to flooding and strong winds, which can damage church facilities and disrupt their sanitation. The purpose of this study was to determine the sanitation of the church environment and buildings, as well as its sanitation facilities. This research is a descriptive study using an observational checklist method based on the Church Inspection Form stipulated by Decree of the Minister of Health 288/MENKES/SK/III/2003 concerning Guidelines for the Sanitation of Public Facilities and Buildings. The results indicate that all Evangelical Christian Churches in Timor (GMIT) in the Kelapa Lima District meet environmental and building sanitation requirements with a score of 70% or more and meet sanitation facility requirements with a score of 75%. However, several churches do not meet the requirements for certain variables, such as yard sanitation, toilets, trash cans, and worship equipment. Churches are expected to pay special attention to church sanitation by establishing a regular cleaning schedule, such as washing offering trays and routinely cleaning church toilets, not only on Sundays but also every two weeks.

Abstract

Waste is one of the environmental health problems that remains a major challenge in various regions. Population growth and changes in consumption patterns have led to increasing waste volumes, while suboptimal waste management has led to environmental pollution, aesthetic disturbances, and the risk of environmental-based diseases such as diarrhea, dengue fever, and skin infections. This waste problem becomes increasingly important when associated with the lifestyle of boarding house residents who generally have limited space, facilities, and time to carry out optimal waste management. This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and availability of facilities with waste management of boarding house residents. The study was conducted in Hamlet 1, Penfui Timur Village, Kupang Tengah District, Kupang Regency and was carried out on May 12-June 12, 2025. The research design used in this study was an analytical survey with a cross-sectional study design approach. The study population was boarding house residents in Hamlet 1, Penfui Timur Village with a total sample of 100 people. The collected data were analyzed using the chi-square test. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was no relationship between knowledge and waste management (p-value = 0.687), there was a relationship between attitudes and waste management (p-value = 0.046), and there was also no relationship between the availability of infrastructure and waste management (p-value = 0.345) of boarding house residents.

Abstract

Dental and oral health problems in Indonesia remain a serious challenge, particularly among school-aged children. According to the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI), the national prevalence of decayed, damaged, or painful teeth is 45.6%, and among the 5–9 year age group it reaches 49.9%. In East Kalimantan, the prevalence of dental health problems is 44.8%, with the highest cases occurring in elementary school–aged children. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of health education using quartet cards on improving toothbrushing knowledge and attitudes among students of MI Ar-Rahmah Loa Janan Ilir. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. A total of 52 fourth-grade students participated as research samples, selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. The research instrument consisted of knowledge and attitude questionnaires that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results indicated a significant improvement in students’ knowledge and attitudes after receiving health education through quartet cards. The Wilcoxon test produced a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) for both variables, confirming that quartet cards are effective as a learning medium to enhance students’ knowledge and attitudes regarding proper toothbrushing. Quartet cards are therefore effective for use in oral health education to improve students’ knowledge and attitudes toward correct toothbrushing practices. It is recommended that this medium be more widely implemented as an educational method in elementary schools.

Abstract

Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women and is largely caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection. Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) is a simple, effective, and recommended method for early detection to reduce morbidity and mortality rates from cervical cancer. However, VIA screening coverage in Indonesia remains low, including in the working area of Sukatani Health Center. This study aimed to identify indicators associated with the behavior of women of reproductive age (WRA) in undergoing VIA screening in Sukamanah Village. This research employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design, involving 82 WRA respondents selected through consecutive sampling. Independent variables included education, knowledge, attitude, information sources, and spousal support. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed with the chi-square test. The results showed that 61% of respondents had never undergone a VIA test. Significant associations were found between VIA screening behavior and knowledge (p=0.003), attitude (p=0.021), and spousal support (p=0.003). Meanwhile, education (p=0.073) and sources of information (p=0.075) were not significantly associated. These findings highlight that improving knowledge, fostering positive attitudes, and strengthening spousal support are key strategies to increase WRA participation in VIA screening for early cervical cancer detection.
