Abstract

This study investigates the Tabot Festival in Bengkulu Indonesia focusing on its cultural, religious and sosioeconomic impacts, with the aim of demonstrating how local traditions can both preserve cultural heritage and empower the community economically. The study involves examining the festival's transition from a Shiite religious ceremony commemorating Imam Husein bin Ali’s martyrdom, to a broader cultural celebration that attracts significant tourism. Employing a qualitative ethnographic method, data were analyzed through extensive literature reviews. The findings reveal that the festival retains its deep cultural and religious roots, reflecting humanitarian and Islamic values such as courage, sacrifice and justice through its rituals and processions. Despite its evolution into a lively cultural event, the festival continues to uphold significant Islamic traditions and symbols. Economically, the Tabot Festival provides substantial benefits to the local economy, boosting sectors such as hospitality, restaurants and transportation. It also creates a multiplier effect by stimulating the creative economy and generating temporary employment opportunities for vendors, artisans and service providers. The local community's active participation further strengthens social cohesion and economic welfare.

Abstract

The Minangkabau community, known for its devout religiosity, is unique in its adherence to a matrilineal kinship system, which differs from the patrilineal teachings of Islam. This article explains the relationship between customary law, Islam, Minangkabau society in Hamka's works. The findings not only show how the relationship between customs and religion manifest themselves in Minangkabau society, as shown in the works that are the subject of this study, but also include a critique of this relationship. Hamka argues through his works that the relationship embodied in the Minangkabau concept, namely syarak bersanding adat, adat bersanding kitabullah (religion alongside custom, custom alongside the Book of Allah), is not yet an ideal concept because it is not dominated by Sharia. As a result, the customary system still leads to discrimination, not only against outsiders but also among community members themselves, regarding the regulation of marriage and inheritance

Abstract

Religious language has become part of social life. Apart from functioning as an expression of religious devotion, religious language also contains the meaning of internalizing religious virtue, which has implications for social piety. This research aims to describe the Jum’at Berkah tradition at the Jogokariyan Mosque in Yogyakarta. This socioreligious tradition has strong roots in the doctrine of philanthropy and takes advantage of the momentum of Friday as a day that is believed to contain many blessings. Methodologically, this research utilizes qualitative research procedures and data collection through observation and interviews. By utilizing an anthropolinguistic perspective, this research finds several conclusions. First, the Jum’at Berkah tradition carried out at the Jogokariyan Mosque in Yogyakarta, is a cultural phenomenon of Muslim society closely related to the muscular and implicative elements of the Islamic language. Environmental, social, and religious understanding factors contribute to implementing Jum’at Berkah through Sego Jum’at. The use of the term Jum’at Berkah in giving charities is based on people's religious understanding. It explains that Friday is sayyidul ayyam, a good day, and distinguishes it from other days. Second, Jum’at Berkah has a religious impact with a socio-economic dimension, specifically increasing people's awareness of sharing, strengthening brotherhood ties with fellow humans, and competing to do kindness.

Thus, this study provide deeper insight into how the Bugis community interprets marriage as a sacred institution entirely of responsibility. This research investigates the Mappacci procession, comprehensively including the procedures, the roles of the actors, and the symbolic meaning of each stage of the ritual, along with their relationship to the belief system and social structure of the Bugis tribe. The method employed is a type of field research with a qualitative approach, observations, interviews, and documentation for data collection. Descriptive data analysis techniques are also used. The results of the research show that religious values are found in the Mappacci tradition, namely in the Mappasau Botting procession (taking care of the bride), the Cimme Passilli procession (bathing the bride), and Mappanre Temme (completing the recitation of the Qur'an). In addition, the cultural value in the Mappacci tradition lies in the tools or objects used in the Bugis traditional Mappacci process area, which contain meaning and messages, namely head pillows, Bugis sarongs/silk sarongs, banana leaf shoots, jackfruit leaves, pacci leaves, jasmine rice, candles, brown sugar, coconut, and pacci holders or containers

Abstract

Muhammadiyah is one of Indonesia's most prominent Islamic religious organizations, growing rapidly as a leading religious organization in health and education. This research examines the challenges faced by the Muhammadiyah branch in the Padang Lawas Utara district. This study explores the dynamics between Muhammadiyah's institutional practices and the cultural frameworks within which they operate. The study utilizes a case study method to provide an in-depth understanding of the interactions between Muhammadiyah's organizational practices and local cultural elements. Data collection involves semi-structured interviews with key informants, participant observation, and document analysis of relevant organizational records and cultural artifacts. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis. A triangulation method is employed to ensure the validity and reliability of the data. The findings indicate that while local traditions can enhance the acceptance of Muhammadiyah's reformist ideals, they can also present challenges when cultural norms conflict with the organization's objectives. They are reluctant to accept the Muhammadiyah ideology due to the incompatibility between local culture and Islamic teachings.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the symbols in the tradition of Ruwat Banyu Panguripan in the integration of culture and religion in commemorating the Islamic New Year in Pemalang Regency. Banyu panguripan literally means water of life. This tradition reflects a harmonious combination of cultural values and community beliefs correlated with the Islam adhered to. The Ruwat Banyu Panguripan ruwat tradition exists in the Pulosari District, especially at the Manunggal Jati Utama College. This study uses a qualitative approach with a qualitative descriptive method in collecting data through observation, interviews, and literature related to the tradition of Ruwat Banyu Panguripan. This research shows that the tradition of Ruwat Banyu Panguripan in Pulosari is not exclusively organized by the Wong Gunung Festival but also by the Manunggal Jati Utama College, which was formerly a member of the Prabasari Padepokan. The Ruwat Banyu Panguripan tradition aims to deliver each individual's wishes to God. In the process of Ruwat Banyu Panguripan, water intake comes from four directions of the compass (the west, west, south, and north). For several months, verses of the Qur'an were chanted by members of the College until, at the time of this unification, the Prophet's prayer was recited. It shows that preserving local culture is integrated with the routine of the Muslim community, specifically reading the Qur'an and praying to the Prophet in a clean and holy state.
