Abstract

Family communication plays a decisive role in shaping moral integrity, emotional stability, and ethical continuity within human relationships. This study examines how Sayyidina Ali ibn Abi Talib conceptualizes ethical communication and how his teachings can strengthen family communication within a normative religious framework. Employing a qualitative normative–religious research design, the study conducts an interpretative library-based analysis of Nahj al-Balaghah as the primary source, supported by classical and contemporary Islamic ethical scholarship. The findings identify five interrelated ethical principles governing family communication: wisdom (hikmah), truthfulness (sidq), gentleness (rifq), self-restraint (hilm), and moral accountability in speech. These principles demonstrate that communication is not a neutral social skill but a morally accountable practice that reflects character and spiritual consciousness. The study contributes a coherent normative ethical framework that integrates classical Islamic moral philosophy into contemporary discourse on family communication. It implies that strengthening family relationships requires ethical reflection, emotional discipline, and moral responsibility in everyday speech.

Abstract

Polygamous marriage often creates complex relational dynamics that require culturally grounded strategies to maintain harmony. This study analyzes the construction of marital harmony between first and second wives through a comparative socio-legal lens, integrating perspectives from Islamic law and Sasak cultural norms. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected from polygamous families, religious leaders, and customary figures through in-depth interviews and focused observations in selected Sasak communities. Findings show that marital harmony is shaped by three key factors: structured role negotiation between wives, the husband’s equitable fulfillment of nafkah and emotional responsibilities, and the cultural mechanism of silepak, which encourages conflict mediation. Data also reveal that first wives tend to emphasize legal guarantees, whereas second wives rely more on cultural acceptance to maintain relational stability. This study contributes a dual-framework model for analyzing polygamous harmony and recommends strengthening community-based counseling that integrates Islamic legal ethics with local wisdom.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the epistemological characteristics, validity, and typologies of Qur’anic interpretations produced by non-mufassir intellectuals in contemporary Indonesia. Recent studies show that the growing involvement of scientists and non-traditional scholars in Qur’anic interpretation has expanded interdisciplinary engagement but also raised concerns regarding interpretive authority and methodological legitimacy. The tension between classical tafsir standards and modern scientific approaches necessitates a critical evaluative framework grounded in Qur’anic hermeneutics. This research employs a qualitative Systematic Literature Review (SLR) design to map, evaluate, and synthesize non-tafsir works produced by selected non-mufassir intellectuals. Data were analyzed using comparative and content analysis through the lenses of ma‘na cum maghza, maqaṣidi tafsir, and the integration interconnection paradigm. The findings reveal that interpretive validity is primarily determined by scholarly capacity and methodological awareness rather than formal religious status. Second, non-mufassir interpretations fall into five epistemological typologies: apologetic, confirmatory, heuristic, critical, and collaborative-integrative, with varying degrees of credibility. Third, Qur’an science integration is methodologically sound only when grounded in equitable interdisciplinary dialogue, respect for historical meaning, and maqaṣid-oriented objectives. This study contributes an evaluative epistemological framework for contemporary tafsir studies and recommends strengthening methodological discipline and academic validation in future interdisciplinary interpretations.

Abstract

This study analyzes Ziauddin Sardar’s concept of integrating religion and science and its relevance for contemporary knowledge and civilization. Rapid scientific and technological development shaped by secular paradigms has generated ethical, ecological, and civilizational crises. At the same time, Muslim societies continue to face epistemological dependence and fragmentation between religious and scientific knowledge. These conditions underscore the need for an integrative framework that reconnects science with moral and spiritual values. This research employs a qualitative library-based method, examining Sardar’s key works alongside recent scholarly literature on Islamic epistemology and science–religion relations. Data are analyzed through qualitative content analysis to identify epistemological assumptions, normative principles, and thematic patterns. The findings show that, first, Sardar views integration as an epistemological reconstruction grounded in tawḥīd, rejecting the assumed neutrality of modern science. Second, his paradigm of Islamic science is value-based, human-centered, rooted in Islamic intellectual tradition, epistemically plural, and future-oriented through futures studies. Third, this integration constitutes a civilizational response to Western epistemological hegemony, moral disconnection in science, and global challenges, including climate change and artificial intelligence. This study contributes to Islamic epistemology and science–religion studies by framing integration as a paradigmatic and civilizational project, and it recommends further empirical research on the implementation of integrative science frameworks in education, policy, and technology.

Abstract

The increasing participation of women in professional careers in religious communities has given rise to new dynamics in family relations and social perceptions based on religious values. This study aims to analyze the construction of meaning for women pursuing careers through the perspectives of the Living Qur'an and Islamic feminism, as well as the transformation of social acceptance in the Kraksaan community, Probolinggo. Using a case study approach, the study involved 23 career women informants from various professions selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model and tested for validity through triangulation and member checking. The results show that internalization of Qur'anic values not only serves as a spiritual foundation but also as a social legitimacy for women's identities as professional breadwinners. In addition, the concept of religious professionalism emerged, namely the combination of competitive public performance and adherence to family values, resulting in a balanced role without triggering domestic or social conflict. This study contributes to the expansion of the Living Qur'an discourse by proposing a spiritual career feminism framework as a new paradigm in viewing the agency of modern Muslim women.

Abstract

This study investigates teachers’ efforts to preserve classical pesantren traditions within meaningful learning in the Religious Program of MAN 1 Probolinggo. Despite the growing influence of digitalization in education, teachers remain committed to maintaining traditional pedagogical practices such as sorogan, bandongan, and kitab kuning study that embody the intellectual legacy of salaf scholars. These practices serve not only as channels for transmitting knowledge but also as frameworks for shaping students’ character, moral discipline, and spiritual awareness. In this process, teachers function as designers of learning experiences who integrate cognitive understanding with emotional and spiritual engagement between teachers, students, and classical texts. This research employs a qualitative approach using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of interactions between teachers and students. The findings show that teachers play a crucial role in sustaining pesantren traditions within formal schooling. Through traditional methods and the cultivation of adab, they create profound, value-oriented, and culturally rooted learning experiences. The study concludes that educational modernization does not rely solely on digital technologies but can also be pursued by revitalizing values, exemplars, and the scholarly heritage of pesantren.

Abstract

In an increasingly multicultural society, education faces the challenge of fostering not only intellectual competence but also ethical awareness, empathy, and moral responsibility among students. This study aims to explore how transformative religious pedagogy can foster ethical awareness in a diverse student population. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with faculty and student leaders, classroom observations, and analysis of institutional documents. The research findings reveal three key mechanisms: dialogic faith, which fosters reflective ethical transformation; reflective learning, which nurtures moral awareness through discussion, case analysis, and guided contemplation; and structured multicultural encounters, which strengthen compassionate identity and social responsibility. This study contributes a practical and conceptual model that integrates dialogic, reflective, and intercultural pedagogical approaches in religious education. The implications suggest that educators should implement structured opportunities for dialogue, reflection, and intercultural engagement to foster holistic moral development, bridging theoretical knowledge with ethical practice across diverse educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation and effectiveness of the talqin strategy in strengthening Qur’anic memorization in non–full tahfidz Islamic boarding schools. Qur’anic memorization remains a core element of Islamic education, yet many pesantren face limited instructional time and systemic constraints that undermine the quality of memorization. These conditions necessitate adaptive pedagogical strategies that maintain accuracy, retention, and student engagement. This research employed a qualitative multi-site case study conducted at two pesantren, using observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed through an interactive thematic model to capture cognitive, affective, and systemic dimensions of learning. The findings reveal that talqin significantly enhances the cognitive and technical quality of memorization by strengthening auditory encoding, retention stability, and recitational accuracy. It also positively influences students’ affective domain by increasing confidence, motivation, and learning readiness through guided correction and emotional reassurance. Furthermore, the effectiveness of talqin is powerfully shaped by instructional systems, teacher supervision, student preparedness, and institutional learning culture. These results demonstrate that talqin functions as a system-dependent pedagogical strategy rather than a standalone technique. This study contributes theoretically by offering a holistic model of Qur’anic memorization and, practically, by recommending a structured, supervised, and context-sensitive implementation of talqin in pesantren with limited tahfidz programs.

Abstract

Education in Islam is inherently value-driven and aims at holistic human Development grounded in moral and spiritual consciousness. This study aims to formulate Qur'anic pedagogical values as normative foundations for Islamic education by examining their epistemological, methodological, and character-based dimensions. Employing a qualitative, normative–interpretative approach, the study analyzes selected Qur'anic verses alongside classical and contemporary tafsir, drawing on authoritative exegetes and scholarly literature through a systematic thematic analysis. The findings demonstrate that Islamic education is founded on a theocentric epistemology emphasizing literacy, knowledge transmission, and lifelong learning; an ethical and dialogical pedagogy rooted in wisdom and non-coercive communication; and a character education model centered on family-based moral formation. These results indicate that Qur'anic pedagogy offers an integrated and operational educational framework rather than abstract moral ideals. The study contributes a coherent normative model that bridges classical Qur'anic interpretation with contemporary academic discourse. It recommends the systematic integration of Qur'anic pedagogical values into curriculum design, instructional strategies, and teacher formation to strengthen the moral and philosophical coherence of Islamic education.

Abstract

This study examines the Khidmah System as a model for human resource development and character education at the Salaf Darussalam Islamic Boarding School, Sumbersari, Kediri. The focus of the research includes the implementation of solemnity, its contribution to the competence and character of students, and the challenges of its application in the modern era. The method used is qualitative with the type of case study research through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation analysis. The results of the study show that khummah runs as an experiential learning mechanism that fosters discipline, responsibility, solidarity, basic leadership, and social skills of students. However, there are challenges in the form of the absence of written SOPs, inequality in the workload, and disruption of the use of gadgets. The research concludes that the Khidmah System has the potential to be a model of character education that can be replicated in other Islamic boarding schools, provided that it is strengthened through formal regulations, intensive coaching, and adaptation to technological developments.
