Abstract

Brain blood vessels block or rupture in cerebrovascular disease (CVD), limiting oxygen and nutrient delivery to brain tissue. An untreated stroke can cause lasting brain damage, disability, or even death. Common complications include muscle weakness, coordination issues, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, reduced sensitivity, facial or bodily paralysis, and balance problems. Stroke survivors are advised to engage in physical exercises such as heel raises and sit-to-stand (STS) movements to address balance impairments. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of heel raise and STS exercises on improving balance in post-stroke patients at the Sawah Lebar Public Health Center in Bengkulu Municipality. A quasi-experimental design was employed with 52 participants split evenly into intervention and control groups. Participants were selected using purposive sampling, and balance was measured using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). The Mann-Whitney test revealed a significant difference in balance scores between groups (p-value = 0.000, p ≤ 0.05, indicating a positive effect of the intervention). Before intervention, both groups experienced balance impairments, with the intervention group scoring 33.04 (SD 6.095) and the control group 31.54 (SD 4.933). After the intervention, scores improved more notably in the intervention group (scored by 38.04, SD 5.744) compared to the control group (scored by 32.65, SD 5.012), p-value = 0.000 (Mann-Whitney). Intervention increased the average score by +5.00 and control by +1.12. Heel raise and sit-to-stand  (STS) exercises significantly improved balance in post-stroke patients and may serve as effective rehabilitation strategies, although further larger randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract

Lower back and pelvic pain are common complaints among pregnant women, particularly in the third trimester, due to physiological and hormonal changes. These discomforts significantly impact daily functioning and quality of life. To evaluate the effectiveness of a modified pregnancy support belt in reducing lower back and pelvic pain among pregnant women in the South Jakarta area. This quasi-experimental study involved 60 pregnant women in their third trimester, divided into two groups: an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group used the modified pregnancy support belt, while the control group used a standard pregnancy belt. Pain levels were measured before and after the intervention using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Sociodemographic characteristics, including age, education, occupation, and parity, were also analyzed. Most respondents were aged 20–35 years, housewives, and high school graduates. The mean reduction in VAS scores was 3.1 (95% CI: 2.6–3.6) in the intervention group compared to 2.3 (95% CI: 1.5–3.1) in the control group. Back and pelvic pain were associated with a measurable decrease post-intervention (p < 0.05). The use of a modified pregnancy support belt demonstrated a greater reduction in lower back and pelvic pain compared to a standard belt. Supportive belts should be considered as a non-pharmacological intervention to enhance maternal comfort and well-being during pregnancy.

Abstract

Butterfly pea flowers are rich in anthocyanin and have therapeutic benefits, particularly due to their antioxidant properties. However, their use in the food and pharmaceutical industries is still limited due to their low stability in environmental conditions, which causes degradation, decreased stability and bioavailability. Nanoencapsulation is a potential method for improving the stability and effectiveness of anthocyanin. This review aims to identify various coating materials and encapsulation techniques used to protect  anthocyanin in butterfly pea flowers, as well as to evaluate their effects on the final product's stability, characteristics, and physicochemical properties. Literature search were conducted through PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and SpringerLink using structured keywords, following the inclusion criteria based on the Population, Concept, Context (PCC) framework and the PRISMA-ScR protocol. A total 7 published articles met the inclusion criteria. The results show that combination gelatin with coating materials such as pectin or maltodextrin was effective and commonly used. The use combination of gelatin+pectin or gelatin+maltodextrin with freeze drying is capable of forming a strong film, binding anthocyanin, stabilising colour, and proceting anthocyanin from degradation due to its low-temperature process, resulting in high encapsulation efficiency, high retention, and good morphology and particele size. In conclusion, no ideal coating material and encapsulation techniques. Further in vivo bioavailability studies are warranted to evaluate the most promising combinations, gelatin + pectin or gelatin + maltodextrin with freeze drying.

Abstract

The iron supplementation program is one of the efforts to overcome anemia based on WHO recommendations. The compliance of iron supplement consumption is an indicator of the success of anemia prevention programs. This cross-sectional study aims to analyze factors related to compliance with iron supplement consumption among adolescent girls in health center areas in Kuningan Regency. The study involved 105 respondents selected using a proportional random sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire for each variable. The data were analyzed using Chi-Square statistical test. The results showed that only 21% of adolescent girls were found to be compliant in taking iron supplements. Approximately 62.9% of adolescent girls with good knowledge were compliant in taking iron supplements (p=0.041). 70.4% of adolescent girls with positive attitudes were compliant in taking iron supplements (p=0.018). Approximately 50.6% of adolescent girls lacked support from teachers (p=0.019), 71.1% lacked support from peers (p=0.010), and 62.7% lacked access to nutrition education or counseling at school (p=0.010). This study suggests the need of cross-sectoral support from both the health and education sectors to strengthen the implementation of the routine iron tablet consumption program as recommended.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between physicians’ knowledge of informed consent and the completeness of its implementation in medical procedures. The research employed an observational analytic approach with a cross-sectional design and quantitative methods. The study population consisted of general practitioners, specialists, dentists, and dental specialists working at Banten Provincial General Hospital and Dr. Drajat Prawiranegara Regional General Hospital. A total of 94 physicians were included as respondents. The variables examined included physicians’ knowledge of informed consent, the completeness of its implementation, and respondent characteristics such as age, years of service, and training history. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results indicated a significant association between physicians’ knowledge, years of service, and prior training with the completeness of informed consent implementation. Physicians with good knowledge demonstrated a higher likelihood of complete implementation (OR 10.6; 95% CI 3.7–30.4) compared to those with poorer knowledge. Similarly, physicians with less than five years of service had a higher rate of complete informed consent implementation (78%) compared to those with five or more years of service (57.1%). Moreover, those who had received training were significantly more likely to implement informed consent completely (OR 6.95; 95% CI 1.51-31.94) than those without training experience. In contrast, physician age was not significantly associated with informed consent completeness. In conclusion, enhancing physician knowledge and promoting ongoing training are essential to improving the quality of informed consent practices in clinical settings.

Abstract

Household characteristics are defined by socioeconomic conditions and other factors, including cultural aspects. Culture dictates dietary choices, methods of preparation, locations, and timing of food preparation. This study examined cultural influences on family dietary practices among the To Pekurehua and Javanese tribes. This research was conducted over a ten-month period, from February to November 2023. The application of this equation yielded a sample of 79 respondents from the North Lore District (representing the To Pekurehua tribe) and 41 respondents from the West Pamona District (representing the Javanese tribe). The To Pekurehua and Javanese tribes possessed average meal frequencies of 2.86 and 3.00 times each day, respectively. The practice of communal dining was observed in 91.1% of the To Pekurehua tribe and 87.8% of the Javanese tribe. The To Pekurehua tribe generated a family dinner participation rate of 87.3%, whereas the Javanese tribe’s rate was 82.9%. In both tribes, fathers, as the head of the household, received priority in food distribution. In contrast, the wives in the Javanese tribe exerted greater influence over the food menu than those in the To Pekurehua tribe.

Abstract

Anemia among adolescent girls remains a significant public health concern, impairing growth, learning, productivity, and reproductive health. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between iron supplement adherence, dietary intake, nutritional status, and anemia among 105 female students aged 12–15 years in Madiun Regency, Indonesia, using a total sampling approach. Data collection included anthropometric measurements, dietary intake assessed with a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), hemoglobin levels measured by point-of-care testing, and iron supplement adherence, with anemia defined as hemoglobin <12 g/dL. The prevalence of anemia was 14.3%. While 88.6% of respondents adhered to iron supplements, non-adherence was associated with a 24.5-fold higher risk of anemia (p < 0.001). Most participants reported inadequate dietary intake, specifically in terms of energy (79.0%), protein (76.2%), zinc (62.9%), and iron (93.3%). Nutritional intake and BMI-based nutritional status showed no significant association with anemia, although non-chronic energy deficiency (non-KEK) was linked to a higher prevalence (p = 0.030). In conclusion, adherence to iron supplementation strongly protects against anemia; however, poor dietary quality remains a challenge. Therefore, strengthening supervised supplementation programs, improving school-based dietary quality, and implementing regular hemoglobin screening are recommended to reduce the risk of anemia among adolescent girls.

Abstract

Effective pain management after cesarean section (C-section) is critical for maternal recovery and well-being. Lavender aromatherapy has been suggested as a complementary therapy to reduce postoperative pain. This study aims to evaluate the effect of lavender aromatherapy on postoperative pain in women undergoing C-section. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 120 women undergoing C-section were assigned to either a lavender aromatherapy group (n=60) or a placebo group (n=60). Baseline characteristics, including age, education, parity, and smoking status, were assessed to ensure comparability. Postoperative pain intensity was measured using a standardized pain scale.  Participants were predominantly aged 20–35 years (Placebo 91.67%, Aromatherapy 88.33%) and non-smokers. Educational attainment and parity were comparable between groups. Lavender aromatherapy significantly reduced post-C-section pain compared to placebo, The results showed a statistically significant difference in pain scores (U = 2638.5, p < 0.001, r = 0.40). The intervention was well-tolerated and easily applied, suggesting modulation of pain through both neurophysiological and psychological pathways. Lavender aromatherapy is a safe, non-invasive, and effective adjunct for postoperative pain management after C-section. Its integration into standard postoperative care may enhance maternal comfort and satisfaction. Further multicenter studies with standardized protocols are recommended to confirm efficacy and explore long-term outcomes

Abstract

Preeclampsia is a severe pregnancy disorder and causes high maternal mortality rates in Indonesia, with 1,077 cases in 2021. This study aims to investigate the association between maternal dietary patterns and the incidence of preeclampsia, particularly among pregnant women in Jepara Regency, a coastal region. This study is a quantitative correlational study, with the population being all mothers with a gestational age above 20 weeks who underwent examinations at Rehatta Hospital, Jepara Regency. Respondents were determined by consecutive sampling, obtaining 50 pregnant women who underwent pregnancy checks during August-September 2024. Data on maternal dietary patterns were obtained by filling out the FFQ (Food Frequency Questionnaire) sheet. Data on the incidence of preeclampsia were determined based on a doctor's diagnosis. The collected data were analyzed univariately and bivariately using SPSS software. The Pearson test results for carbohydrate diet obtained p-value = 0.001, animal side dishes p-value = 0.001, vegetable side dishes p-value = 0.007, vegetables p-value = 0.001, fruits p-value = 0.001, fast food p-value = 0.001, and drinks p-value = 0.056. Based on the seven nutrients and drinks, high carbohydrate intake, lack of animal side dishes, vegetables, fruit, irregular eating, and fast food consumption have p-values <0.05, meaning maternal diet has a significant relationship with the incidence of preeclampsia. This finding confirms that a balanced diet during pregnancy plays a vital role in preventing preeclampsia. Therefore, monitoring diet and nutritional education for pregnant women needs to be a focus in efforts to prevent preeclampsia in health services
