Abstract

This study is a descriptive qualitative research with the aim of describing the critical thinking process of Junior High School students in solving mathematical problems in terms of reflective and impulsive cognitive style. The subjects of this study consisted of 2 students of grade VIII junior high school with reflective cognitive style and impulsive cognitive style. The selection of both subjects also considers equivalent mathematical ability, same sex, communicative, and willing. Data collection technique is done by providing MFFT (Matching Familiar Figured Test), mathematical problem solving tasks, and interviews. Data were analyzed based on critical thinking indicators contained in FRISCO (Focus, Reason, Inference, Situation, Clarity, Overview). The results showed that the critical thinking process of both students in solving the problem is relatively the same. At the stage of understanding the second problem, students already meet the FRISCO indicator. At the stage of making a plan, reflective students already meet the FRISCO indicator, but impulsive students do not do an overview. At the stage of implementing the plan impulsive students do not pass the overview. At the last stage, namely re-examining, impulsive students do not do situation and clarity. In addition between reflective and impulsive students have different ways or solutions in solving math problems. Students with reflective cognitive style in answering a given problem can understand something as a whole, analyze it much better, and do the planning and follow the plan, so that students with reflective cognitive style can do the process of thinking critically when facing a given problem.

Abstract

Language learning as a medium of information is very important. English is a language that we must learn and master. The introduction of new words is the most important step in improving one's command of the English language. Using learning media is a great approach to improve vocabulary knowledge in English. Flip chart media is used as a learning tool. Media such as flip charts are useful tools for education because they display information in a format that is visually appealing and easy to digest, allowing students to better remember key ideas, images, symbols, and more. The aim of this research is to find out whether the use of flip chart media can increase the vocabulary acquisition of second grade students at SDN Pitu 2. Quantitative techniques, namely one-group pretest-posttest design, are used in this research. Normality tests and homogeneity tests are research prerequisites; The data is considered normally distributed with a sign value greater than 0.05. A homogeneous sample is a sample whose sign value is greater than 0.05. Research findings show that the use of flip chart media has an impact on students' ability to learn English vocabulary at SDN Pitu 2. This is supported by the results of the paired t-test which has a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of flip chart media can improve students' mastery of English vocabulary at SDN Pitu 2.

Abstract

Several studies prove that the visible factors of educational inequalities are socioeconomic status (SES) disparities in society. Students from rural areas and poor families face difficulties accessing high-quality Information and Communication Technology for online learning. The digital divide in urban and rural areas has become more evident during the covid-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether educational inequalities exist in the online learning experiences of students in West Sulawesi amidst Covid-19 pandemic. Quantitative research was applied in this study using random sampling from 381 students in West Sulawesi. Furthermore, the data were assessed with a one-way ANOVA test. The descriptive statistic of the population reveals that most higher education students in West Sulawesi come from very low to low SES families. The test of difference confirms that students who live in rural, suburban, and urban areas showed a different level of technology access where students from rural areas have lower access to technology for online learning. However, the result evinces no difference in accessing technology for online learning across the socioeconomic status levels. For further investigation, the researcher recommends doing in-depth exploration specifically in the population to find an accurate answer of why educational inequalities do not exist across SES level.
