Abstract

The utilization of coconut waste, particularly coconut shells, in Kaiyasa Village, North Oba Subdistrict, Tidore Islands City, remains suboptimal because the waste is commonly discarded or burned without generating economic value. Limited knowledge, technical skills, and access to market information are major barriers to developing this local commodity. This Community Service (PKM) program aims to improve the knowledge, skills, and management capacity of the Kaiyasa Village community in processing coconut shell waste into high-value charcoal and strengthening village-based microenterprise governance. The program employed an interactive participatory approach through five stages: awareness raising and perception alignment; management and technical training; appropriate technology implementation through standard operating procedures and simple financial records; intensive mentoring and evaluation; and development of a sustainability plan. Fifteen coconut farmers actively participated. The results showed improved knowledge and skills in waste processing and business management. Applying circular economy principles increased the value of coconut shells from Rp700/kg to Rp4,500/kg, providing an economic buffer when copra prices fluctuate. The program also established foundations for a structured, transparent, and sustainable business group.
