Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of wayang media as a local culture-based strategy in improving the Javanese reading skills of second-grade students at MI Salafiyah Ngalian Tirto Pekalongan. This study is motivated by the low reading skills of students, especially in the aspects of pronunciation, fluency, intonation, and comprehension of reading content, so that concrete, interesting learning media are needed and are in accordance with the characteristics of elementary school students. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design with 66 research subjects, namely classes 2A and 2B. Data collection was carried out through observation, reading tests, interviews, and documentation during three meetings, while data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions using triangulation techniques. The results of the study indicate that the use of wayang media can create an active, fun, interactive, and contextual learning atmosphere. Students who learn using wayang media show a tendency to have better reading skills than students who learn without wayang media. Wayang media also increases students' attention, courage, participation, and enthusiasm in learning Javanese. Thus, wayang media can be an effective alternative learning media to improve Javanese reading skills while strengthening local cultural literacy in elementary school students.

Abstract

The lives of differently abled individuals have long been overshadowed by stereotypes imposed by the non-disabled majority. As a result, their bodies are often perceived as incapable of engaging with the world meaningfully. However, narratives written by motorically differently abled authors demonstrate that they do not lose the capacity to make sense of reality. Rather, their perceptual experiences are constituted in different ways. Despite this, the nature of their perceptual world remains underexplored. This study aims to describe the perceptual world of motorically differently abled authors as represented in their novels. This study is limited to three novels by motorically differently abled authors and does not include other types of disabilities or non-literary texts. The data sources consist of Kau Begitu Sempurna by Ariny Nurul Haq, Om by Agil Rizkiani, and Menjeda Cinta by Indah Tinumbia. Drawing on three key concepts from Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception: chiasm, body schema, and intentionality, the data were analyzed using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method. The findings reveal that the perceptual world of motorically differently abled authors is constituted through three interrelated moments. First, chiasm shows how the differently abled body is “disabled” through the social gaze while also serving as a site for the reversal of stigma. Second, the body schema is extensive and plastic, integrating assistive devices and habitual movements as meaningful extensions of the body. Third, intentionality remains existentially oriented toward achievement, love, and meaningful existence, becoming more contemplative in embodied experience. The findings challenge normate-centered interpretations of disability and reposition differently abled authors as epistemic subjects in Indonesian literary discourse, demonstrating that their perceptual world is structured through embodied meaning-making with implications for disability, literature, and social inclusion.

Abstract

This study examines the content, meaning, and cultural values embedded in a specific corpus of Balinese lontar manuscripts used in the Gending Gambang tradition at Gambang Kwanji Sempidi, Bali. Unlike previous studies that treat lontar manuscripts in a general or catalog-based perspective, this research focuses on an intrinsic case study of a living manuscript tradition that is actively integrated into musical and ritual practice. The main research gap addressed in this study lies in the limited interpretive analysis of lontar manuscripts as contextual cultural texts, particularly in relation to their role in sustaining embodied artistic knowledge in contemporary Balinese society. This research employs a qualitative intrinsic case study design supported by hermeneutic, semiotic, and philological perspectives. Hermeneutics is used to interpret meaning within cultural and historical contexts, semiotics is applied to analyze symbolic structures in the manuscript notation system, while philology supports textual reading and interpretation of the lontar content. Data were collected through interviews, participant observation, documentation, and textual analysis, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings reveal that the lontar manuscripts of Gending Gambang function not only as textual artifacts but also as epistemic instruments that transmit musical knowledge, cultural memory, and ritual authority. The meanings embedded in the manuscripts are constructed through symbolic notation systems that require interpretive reading within communal practice. Furthermore, the cultural values identified include religiosity, artistic discipline, social cohesion, and intergenerational knowledge transmission. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of hermeneutic-semiotic interpretation with philological reading within a single intrinsic ethnocultural case study, demonstrating that lontar manuscripts operate as living cultural texts rather than static literary relics. The study contributes to the development of classical literature studies by positioning lontar manuscripts within contextual cultural literacy, ethnopedagogical practice, and community-based heritage preservation. This reinforces the relevance of lontar manuscripts as dynamic knowledge systems that continue to function within contemporary cultural ecosystems.

Abstract

This study investigates the semantic distinctions and contextual usage of three Japanese verbs associated with the concept of development, namely hattatsu, shinpo, and joutatsu, from the perspective of lexical semantics. Although these verbs are often translated into English as “development,” “progress,” or “improvement,” each carries distinct semantic characteristics and is used in different contexts. The data consist of example sentences illustrating various types of development, including physical, cognitive, technological, and skill-related development. The findings indicate that hattatsu primarily denotes natural and gradual development, commonly associated with physical growth, biological processes, or functional advancement. In contrast, shinpo refers to progressive advancement or positive change on a broader scale, particularly in fields such as science, technology, and society, often implying innovation and significant achievement. Meanwhile, joutatsu specifically describes the improvement of an individual’s abilities through continuous practice, learning, and experience, emphasizing a deliberate and effort-driven process. The analysis demonstrates that, despite sharing a general meaning related to development, these verbs differ substantially in their semantic components and contextual distributions. Understanding these distinctions is essential for the accurate and appropriate use of Japanese in academic, educational, and everyday communication. Furthermore, this study contributes to lexical semantic research by clarifying subtle meaning differences among near-synonymous verbs and offers practical insights for Japanese language learners, educators, translators, and lexicographers. The findings may also help reduce the misuse of semantically related expressions and support more precise language instruction and dictionary descriptions.

Abstract

The 2025 Papua Gubernatorial Election represents a crucial moment in the dynamics of local democracy in Papua. This study investigates the ideological practices of power mobilization carried out by the Acting Mayor of Jayapura and examines how discourse is strategically employed to influence electoral outcomes. The objectives of this research are to identify forms of power mobilization, analyze discourse strategies used to shape public opinion, and examine power relations between local elites and provincial political structures. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. The data consisted of transcripts of conversations between the Acting Mayor of Jayapura and district heads and village officials. Data were analyzed through three dimensions: text, discursive practice, and social practice, supported by verstehen and interpretive methods. The findings reveal that power mobilization was conducted through financial distribution, door-to-door voter mobilization, transportation arrangements for voters, manipulation of voter invitations and identity documents, and the deployment of witnesses and supervisors to secure electoral support. Furthermore, discourse strategies included the use of bodily metaphors and symbolic gestures, numerical rhetoric and vote targets, the framing of political activities as “relaxed but structured,” and the acronym SSB (System, Strategy, Budget) as a technocratic justification for political mobilization. The study also demonstrates asymmetrical power relations between the City of Jayapura and the Provincial Government of Papua, strengthened by access to national political networks, external financial resources, and the co-optation of local elites in surrounding districts. The study concludes that language functions not merely as a medium of communication but as an ideological instrument for legitimizing political interests and reproducing power relations. These findings contribute to critical discourse studies and local political studies by revealing how bureaucratic authority, discourse, and political patronage intersect in contemporary electoral practices in Papua.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe improvements in popular science article writing skills through the integration of mind-mapping methods and the use of digital media on news websites among students in the Family Law Study Program at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design supported by descriptive quantitative data. The research subjects consisted of 33 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, questionnaires, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model across the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was tested through triangulation of sources and techniques to ensure the credibility of the research findings. The results of the study indicate that the mind mapping method helps students organize their ideas and systematically design a writing framework, thereby reducing barriers to writing. Additionally, digital media serves as a publication platform that requires students to adapt to editorial standards and the revision process. The integration of these two strategies has improved students’ skills in writing popular science articles across cognitive, affective, and practical dimensions and reduced the percentage of students experiencing difficulties from 50% to 26.5%. Thus, this learning model can be applied to college-level writing instruction to enhance students’ digital literacy.

Abstract

The implementation of student-centered learning in higher education requires learning models that provide authentic experiences and support the development of twenty-first-century competencies. One of the approaches that fulfills these objectives is Experiential Learning, which emphasizes learning through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. This study aims to examine the implementation of Experiential Learning through student drama production and to investigate its contribution to the development of students’ academic and social competencies. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design. The participants were 40 students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program at Universitas Pancasakti Tegal who were enrolled in the Drama course during the 2025/2026 academic year. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were obtained through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings indicate that Experiential Learning was effectively implemented through the stages of drama production, including script selection, role assignment, rehearsals, performance, and evaluation. All participants perceived the learning model as effective, with 70% rating it as very effective and 30% as effective. Furthermore, the implementation of Experiential Learning contributed to the development of communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership, and adaptability skills. The study concludes that student drama production serves as an effective experiential learning model that promotes meaningful, authentic, and competency-based learning in higher education.

Abstract

This study examines the symbolic language embedded in the Rimpu tradition of the Bima community as a medium for Islamic value education through the representation of religious values, modesty, and cultural identity. The study focuses on the symbolic forms of Rimpu, the social meanings contained in Rimpu Mpida and Rimpu Colo, and the function of Rimpu in shaping the identity of Mbojo women and instilling Islamic values based on local wisdom. This research employed a qualitative approach using the ethnography of communication. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and the recording of cultural terms, particularly Rimpu Mpida, Rimpu Colo, Tembe Nggoli, Maja Labo Dahu, and Nggahi Rawi Pahu. The findings reveal that Rimpu functions as a nonverbal sign system that conveys messages of religious obedience, aurat protection, self-honour, women’s social status, modesty, and moral responsibility in public spaces. Rimpu Mpida marks unmarried women through a more closed form of body covering, whereas Rimpu Colo identifies married women through a style of wearing that leaves the face more visible. Tembe Nggoli strengthens the meaning of Rimpu as a material cultural heritage of Bima because it is closely related to weaving traditions, simplicity, local skills, and appreciation of women’s work. The philosophy of Maja Labo Dahu provides a moral foundation for wearing Rimpu because it teaches shame and fear of violating religious and customary norms. As a medium for Islamic value education, Rimpu instills proper dress ethics, awareness of covering the aurat, social modesty, self-control, respect for women, and local Islamic identity through family habituation, community role models, cultural festivals, and local education. Amid social change, Rimpu has shifted from everyday attire to a cultural symbol in parades, traditional events, schools, and ceremonial spaces. This shift does not erase the meaning of Rimpu but changes the space of its use; therefore, it needs to be strengthened through value education so that younger generations recognize Rimpu not merely as traditional clothing, but also as a bearer of religious, moral, and cultural identity messages. This study contributes to ethnolinguistic, anthropolinguistic, and local wisdom-based Islamic education studies by positioning Rimpu as cultural language, clothing symbolism, social practice, and a medium for transmitting Islamic values within the Bima community.

Abstract

Orthographic transparency plays an important role in literacy development and language maintenance, particularly in minority and endangered language communities. This study investigates the representation of implosive consonants and the mid-central vowel /?/ in three Hawu orthographic traditions: UBB GMIT, Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia (LAI), and Paddi. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes published orthographic materials supplemented by observations from 12 native Hawu speakers representing different age groups and educational backgrounds. The analysis examines phoneme–grapheme correspondences, orthographic transparency, and their implications for literacy development and language maintenance. The findings show that Hawu contains four phonemic implosive consonants (/?, ?, ?, ?/) that contrast with voiced stops and a six-vowel system that includes the mid-central vowel /?/. Although the three orthographic traditions represent most phonemes similarly, they differ substantially in their treatment of implosives and schwa. The UBB orthography consistently distinguishes these phonological contrasts, the LAI orthography preserves them through digraphs and additional orthographic conventions, whereas the Paddi orthography does not consistently differentiate implosives from voiced stops and represents schwa through less direct conventions. Based on the transparency criteria adopted in this study, the UBB orthography demonstrates the highest degree of orthographic transparency. The findings suggest that systematic phoneme–grapheme correspondences may facilitate literacy development while supporting language documentation and maintenance. Nevertheless, orthographic planning should balance linguistic evidence with community preferences, historical usage, institutional practices, and educational feasibility. Because the study is based on qualitative orthographic analysis and participant observations rather than experimental assessment of reading performance, the findings should be interpreted as identifying potential implications for literacy rather than demonstrating causal effects.

Abstract

The farming mantras of the Dayak Tamambaloh community embody ecological knowledge that reflects Indigenous relationships with nature and has been transmitted across generations through oral tradition. This study examines the ecological narratives embedded in these farming mantras and explores how they function as a medium of environmental communication. A descriptive-interpretive qualitative approach was employed using farming mantra texts and in-depth interviews with a purposively selected customary informant. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, informed by Garrard’s ecocritical perspective and Cox’s environmental communication framework. The findings reveal three interconnected ecological narratives: respect for nature, human–nature harmony, and environmental sustainability. These narratives position farming mantras as a cultural medium for transmitting ecological knowledge, environmental ethics, and customary values across generations. This study contributes to Indigenous environmental communication scholarship by demonstrating how oral literature functions as a medium for conserving and transmitting local ecological knowledge, thereby extending ecocritical understandings of Indigenous environmental practices. Because the analysis focuses on one key informant within a single ritual system, the findings should be understood as context-specific rather than broadly representative of all Dayak communities.
