Abstract

The increasing demand for twenty-first-century competencies, including creativity, productivity, and entrepreneurial capacity, has prompted a reorientation of language education toward more adaptive and context-responsive pedagogies. Within this shift, creative writing is increasingly recognized as a strategic means of preparing students for the evolving demands of the contemporary workforce. However, empirical evidence linking creative writing instruction to career readiness in the creative economy remains limited, particularly in cross-national comparative contexts. This study investigates the contribution of creative writing instruction to students’ career readiness in the creative economy sectors of Indonesia and Malaysia. Employing a quantitative approach with an ex-post facto design, data were collected through a structured questionnaire measuring students’ perceptions of creative writing instruction, along with indicators of career readiness, including academic aspirations, resilience, and awareness of career opportunities. The data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistical techniques. The findings indicate that creative writing instruction is associated with the development of productive literacy, creativity, and entrepreneurial orientation. Comparative analysis further reveals that Malaysian students tend to demonstrate higher levels of academic aspiration and resilience, whereas Indonesian students exhibit stronger adaptive capacities in responding to contextual learning constraints. These findings suggest that creative writing instruction extends beyond linguistic development and plays a meaningful role in supporting students’ transition into the creative economy. The study provides empirical support for integrating creative literacy and entrepreneurship into vocational language curricula to enhance students’ career readiness.

Abstract

Language functions not only as a means of communication but also as a reflection of social values, norms, and cultural systems. In Acehnese society, language use is governed by politeness norms that prohibit the utterance of expressions considered taboo, vulgar, or offensive. Previous studies have generally discussed language taboo in broad social contexts, yet no study has specifically examined the typology of taboo language in the domains of the body and sexuality from a sociopragmatic perspective. This study aims to identify the typology of language taboo in those domains and explain its social functions and management strategies in Acehnese interaction. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method within a sociopragmatic framework. Data were collected from 30 native Acehnese speakers through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, recording, note-taking, and documentation techniques. Data analysis involved data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, while source triangulation ensured validity. The findings reveal four categories of taboo language: expressions related to sexual activities, genitalia and sexual organs, disgusting body parts or biological substances, and certain body parts considered inappropriate in specific contexts. Acehnese speakers generally avoid direct expressions and instead use euphemisms, metaphors, or lexical substitutions to maintain politeness and social harmony. The study confirms that taboo language functions as a social mechanism for preserving harmony, preventing conflict, and maintaining cultural values in Acehnese society. These findings contribute to sociopragmatic studies by demonstrating that taboo expressions are connected to cultural beliefs, religious values, and norms governing interpersonal communication in Acehnese communities.

Abstract

The language used in tourism promotion plays a strategic role in shaping tourists’ perceptions and experiences. However, the widespread use of persuasive language in tourism promotion has the potential to lead to the manipulation of meaning. This study aims to elucidate the forms of linguistic manipulation, as well as the cognitive and psychological mechanisms that render such strategies effective in influencing tourists’ perceptions and decision-making, whilst also examining their ethical implications. The study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical design through an interdisciplinary approach integrating forensic psycholinguistics and the philosophy of language. The data consisted of 5 tourism promotional texts collected from 3 digital platforms official tourism websites, Instagram, and Facebook promoting destinations in Lombok. The corpus was selected using purposive sampling based on the publication period (January 2024–June 2026), promotional purpose, audience engagement, and the presence of persuasive linguistic features. The data were analysed using an interactive analysis model involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The research findings indicate that linguistic manipulations such as euphemisms, hyperbole, presuppositions, and framing are systematically employed to shape the image of a destination and influence tourists’ cognitive and affective processes via heuristic pathways. From a philosophy of language perspective, these practices reflect a non-neutral construction of meaning and have the potential to blur the boundaries between information and persuasion. The implications of this research underscore the importance of linguistic ethics in tourism promotion to maintain a balance between persuasive appeal and informational honesty.

Abstract

Children in bilingual preschool environments, such as those found in Madurese-Indonesian communities, are frequently observed switching between their mother tongue and the national language in daily interactions, a phenomenon of code-switching that raises fundamental questions about whether such language alternation supports or hinders first language acquisition. This study addresses the central problem by examining the patterns and functions of code-switching among six children aged 4-6 years at TK ABA VIII Kamal, Bangkalan, and analyzing its role in their first-language acquisition process. The study aims to describe the patterns of code-switching that occur in interactions among six children aged 4-6 years in family and preschool settings, and to analyze the role of such code-switching in children’s first language acquisition. This study employs a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through participant observation, recordings of natural speech, and in-depth interviews with parents and kindergarten educators in TK ABA VIII Kamal, Bangkalan. Data analysis was conducted using a descriptive-interpretive approach grounded in the code-switching typology of Gross et al. (2022), drawing on theories of language acquisition and sociolinguistics. The results indicate that code-switching in children’s daily interactions serves as a communicative strategy that strengthens first-language acquisition rather than hindering it. Code-switching plays a role in expanding vocabulary, reinforcing grammatical structures, and naturally fostering children’s metalinguistic awareness. These findings have important implications for preschool educators and Indonesian language teachers in designing learning strategies that are responsive to children’s linguistic backgrounds in bilingual regions.

Abstract

This study explores the experiences of English as a Second Language (ESL) lecturers in implementing the new English language curriculum at Politeknik Pertanian Negeri Samarinda. The research focuses on lecturers’ perceptions of the curriculum, teaching approaches, and challenges encountered in vocational higher education. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed involving six ESL lecturers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured online interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that lecturers generally perceive the curriculum positively because it promotes communicative learning, learner autonomy, and vocational relevance through English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Lecturers implemented student-centered strategies, modular teaching materials, and technology-based resources to support learning. However, the implementation faced several challenges, including limited instructional time, inadequate training, inconsistent learning materials, students’ low English proficiency, and increased workload. The study implies that effective curriculum implementation requires continuous teacher training, institutional support, improved teaching materials, and sufficient instructional time to enhance English learning outcomes and students’ communicative competence in vocational education.

Abstract

This study explores the contribution of sociolinguistic and pragmatic competences to the development of preservice English teachers’ speaking skills in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. Speaking competence is not limited to grammatical accuracy, pronunciation, and fluency, but also involves the ability to communicate appropriately and meaningfully according to social context, speaker relationship, politeness, and communicative intention. This study employed a qualitative research design involving 73 EFL preservice teachers enrolled in English Language Education programs at universities in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Data were collected through interviews designed to investigate participants’ perceptions and experiences related to sociolinguistic competence, pragmatic competence, and speaking development. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, including data familiarization, coding, theme development, and interpretation. The findings reveal that sociolinguistic competence helps preservice English teachers adjust their spoken language according to context, formality, social roles, and classroom interaction needs. Pragmatic competence enables them to understand implied meanings, speech acts, speaker intentions, and appropriate responses in communication. Together, these competences improve comprehension, expressions, vocabulary, confidence, and the ability to use English appropriately in academic and pedagogical contexts. The study concludes that sociolinguistic and pragmatic competences should be explicitly integrated into English teacher education programs, particularly in speaking courses. This integration can prepare preservice English teachers to become more effective communicators and appropriate language models for their future students.

Abstract

The internationalization of Indonesian language learning for foreign speakers (BIPA) requires teaching materials that not only develop linguistic competence but also promote intercultural understanding through contextualized cultural content. However, most existing BIPA materials remain nationally oriented and insufficiently integrate local cultural identities into beginner-level learning. This study aims to develop and examine an innovative design of basic-level BIPA teaching materials through the recontextualization of North Sumatran local wisdom. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, the study involved stages of needs analysis, material design, expert validation, revision, and limited implementation. The teaching materials were designed by transforming local cultural elements of North Sumatra, including traditional foods, social practices, local tourism, and cultural expressions, into communicative language-learning contexts suitable for beginner foreign learners. Data were collected through interviews, documentation, validation sheets, and learner response questionnaires, and were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings indicate that the recontextualized materials demonstrate strong pedagogical relevance, cultural authenticity, and communicative appropriateness for basic level BIPA instruction. Expert validation results showed that the materials met content, linguistic, and instructional design standards, while learner responses revealed increased engagement and intercultural awareness. This study contributes to the development of culturally responsive BIPA pedagogy by positioning local wisdom not merely as supplementary cultural information but as an integral component of language learning. The study further highlights the importance of recontextualization in constructing meaningful and globally relevant Indonesian language instruction for foreign learners.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a web-based interactive learning media called DIMIBA (Diri Mali Ia Bajual) to support fourth-grade elementary school students’ reading comprehension, particularly in identifying the main idea. The study was motivated by students’ low reading comprehension skills, which are associated with conventional teaching methods that present texts in long and less structured forms. To address this issue, the media integrates a chunking strategy, which organizes information into smaller, meaningful units to facilitate understanding and reduce cognitive load. This research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which was limited to the analysis, design, and development stages. Data were collected through observations, interviews, questionnaires, and expert validation. The developed media was evaluated by material, media, and language experts and further assessed through teacher and student responses. The results showed that the DIMIBA learning media achieved an average validation score of 88%, categorized as very good. Student responses reached 97%, while teacher responses reached 93.74%, both falling within the very good category. These findings indicate that the integration of the chunking strategy in web-based learning media can support reading comprehension and increase student engagement. Therefore, DIMIBA is considered a feasible alternative learning medium for elementary schools. Further studies are recommended to examine its effectiveness in improving students’ learning outcomes.

Abstract

Indonesian language learning in teacher education remains predominantly text-oriented and insufficiently connected to students' local cultural contexts. This condition results in decontextualized learning experiences that inadequately support the engagement and pedagogical readiness of pre-service elementary and madrasah ibtidaiyah teachers. This study examines the influence of integrating local wisdom into Indonesian language learning on student engagement and teaching readiness, and the mediating role of engagement in this relationship. A quantitative survey design was employed, with data collected from 223 PGMI students selected through purposive sampling. Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) analysis using SmartPLS revealed that local wisdom integration positively and significantly affected student engagement (? = 0.742) and teaching readiness (? = 0.391). Student engagement also significantly predicted teaching readiness (? = 0.487) and partially mediated the relationship between local wisdom integration and teaching readiness (? = 0.361). These findings indicate that culturally grounded Indonesian language instruction creates more contextual, participatory, and meaningful learning experiences for pre-service teachers. The study contributes to culturally responsive teacher education by demonstrating that integrating local wisdom is an effective pedagogical strategy for strengthening both student engagement and the professional readiness of future elementary and madrasah ibtidaiyah educators. However, as data were collected through self-reported questionnaires from a single institution with 223 participants, the generalizability of the findings warrants further investigation across diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the kinship values represented in Dayak Kanayatn folktales and their role in preserving traditions, cultural transmission, and social cohesion. Previous studies have primarily examined Dayak oral traditions from linguistic, literary, and cultural perspectives, while limited attention has been given to the relationship between kinship values and traditional practices portrayed in folktales. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach using qualitative content analysis within the sociology of literature perspective. The data were drawn from five Dayak Kanayatn folktales and analyzed to identify kinship values embedded in traditional practices. The findings reveal eight major kinship values: deliberation, brotherhood, friendship, harmony, mutual help, courtesy, obedience, and honor. These values are represented in six traditions, namely headhunting, notokng, marriage, circumcision, farming, and traditional medicine. The findings demonstrate that these traditions function as cultural mechanisms through which kinship values are practiced, preserved, and transmitted across generations, thereby reinforcing collective identity, social solidarity, and indigenous knowledge. This study contributes to the sociology of oral literature by showing that Dayak Kanayatn folktales function not only as cultural heritage but also as social institutions that sustain kinship systems, preserve cultural identity, and strengthen community cohesion amid contemporary social change.
