Abstract

The development of digital communication technology has transformed language practices within social media–based commercial interactions. In digital commerce, language functions not only as a means of communication but also as symbolic capital that shapes social identity, strengthens interpersonal engagement, and supports transaction effectiveness. This study aims to identify the language variations employed by Generation Z during buying and selling interactions on TikTok Live and examine their communicative and economic functions from a linguistic economics perspective. A descriptive qualitative approach was used through non-participant observation of interactions between Generation Z sellers and buyers on TikTok Live. Data were collected using screen recordings, screenshots, and field notes during a one-month observation period and analyzed through qualitative coding. The analysis identified four forms of language variation: abbreviations, code-mixing, puns, and emojis. These linguistic resources function as communicative and economic strategies that improve communication efficiency, strengthen audience engagement, and enhance persuasive interaction in digital commerce. Abbreviations facilitate rapid communication, code-mixing projects a modern and global identity, puns foster interpersonal closeness, and emojis reinforce emotional expression and persuasive intent. These findings contribute to digital sociolinguistics by explaining language adaptation in live commerce, extend linguistic anthropology by illustrating the relationship between Generation Z language practices and digital culture, and enrich the economics of language by demonstrating how linguistic choices create communicative value that supports commercial interaction. This study is limited to one month of TikTok Live observations; therefore, future research should examine longer observation periods and compare language practices across different live commerce platforms.

Abstract

This study examines the state-funded BIPA textbooks by applying Kress and van Leeuwen's (2021) visual grammar and Unsworth's (2006) typology of intersemiosis patterns to identify how verbal and visual modes construct curricular objectives and instructions. The dataset comprised the Sahabatku Indonesia Level 1 and Level 2 textbooks, published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture for novice and elementary foreign learners of Indonesian. The analysis was conducted in two stages. It firstly mapped verbal and visual elements according to their pedagogical roles across 20 units (10 per level). It then categorized their relationships as interrelated, complementary, or integrated. Findings reveal that interrelated relations dominate peripheral sections (cover, pre-activity, cultural insight), while integrated relations characterise core instructional sections where visual and verbal modes are functionally interdependent. Across levels, visual density decreases and modality shifts from cartoon-style illustrations toward realistic photographs, reflecting systematic scaffolding withdrawal. However, writing sections lack adequate multimodal scaffolding for modelling and joint construction. The study demonstrates that the multimodal design of the Sahabatku Indonesia series is systematically structured yet unevenly realised across language skills, with writing sections requiring the most significant compositional improvement.

Abstract

The increasing use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has significantly advanced geolinguistic research, particularly in the development of digital linguistic atlases. However, existing studies primarily employ GIS as a visualization tool, while the methodological workflow for transforming linguistic data into spatial information remains insufficiently documented. This study addresses this gap by conceptualizing the Multilayer Geolinguistic Mapping Framework (MGMF), a documented and replicable methodological framework for GIS-based geolinguistic research. An Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods design was employed using geolinguistic data from Javanese (Cirebon dialect), comprising 267 observation villages, 534 informants, and 200 Swadesh basic vocabulary items. The existing research workflow was analysed and reconstructed into a methodological framework that integrates linguistic processing with spatial analysis in QGIS. The results show that the MGMF comprises five interconnected methodological components that collectively transform linguistic data into spatial information for the development of digital linguistic atlases. Rather than functioning solely as a mapping procedure, the framework documents the logical relationships among successive analytical stages through an input–process–output mechanism, providing a systematic and transparent workflow for GIS-based geolinguistic research. The principal contribution of this study is the conceptualization of a documented, replicable methodological framework that extends the role of GIS beyond spatial visualization to support the systematic transformation of linguistic data into spatial information. By establishing a structured methodological workflow, the MGMF contributes toward the methodological standardization of GIS-based geolinguistic research and provides a reference framework for the development of digital linguistic atlases across diverse regional languages and geographical contexts. A limitation of this study is that the framework was conceptualized from a single case study, namely the Javanese (Cirebon dialect), and therefore requires further empirical validation across other regional languages and geographical settings to confirm its broader applicability.

Abstract

This study examines how the affected community of the 2025 Sumatra flood disaster is visually and discursively represented in an eight-photograph Instagram carousel published by the international news outlet Radio France Internationale (@rfi). Guided by Kress and van Leeuwen's (2006) Multimodal Discourse Analysis and its tripartite model of representational, interactive and compositional metafunctions, this study undertakes a qualitative close reading of both the visual and verbal layers of the carousel to determine the extent to which the local community is included as a legitimate, voiced participant in the narrative of its own disaster, as opposed to being reduced to a passive recipient of institutional rescue or an anonymous statistic of loss. The analysis finds that visual inclusion in the carousel is graded and frequently contradictory rather than binary: institutional actors such as search-and-rescue personnel and military aircraft are consistently constructed as agents endowed with narrative, interactive and compositional dominance, while the affected community oscillates between brief moments of agency, symbolic abstraction and complete representational absence. The single instance in which a community member directly addresses the viewer through gaze is immediately undercut by a compositional text overlay reporting the death toll across her body, while the two photographs depicting the clearest community agency receive no acknowledgment whatsoever in the accompanying caption. This study identifies these patterns as a false individualization arc and a multimodal disjunction between visual presence and discursive voice, demonstrating that a community can be made visible within a disaster narrative while remaining systematically unheard. As a single-case analysis of one carousel from one outlet, this study does not permit generalization across platforms, disaster events or news organizations and its findings should be read as an in-depth diagnostic instance rather than a representative sample of Global North disaster coverage. Nonetheless, by extending Kress and van Leeuwen's (2006) framework beyond static print and single-image analysis to the sequential, multi-image logic of social media carousels, this study offers a replicable analytical model for detecting the gap between visibility and voice and contributes a concrete methodological entry point for future comparative research into how Global South communities are positioned within Global North disaster journalism.

Abstract

This study analyzes the types of conversational implicatures and categories of presupposition found in the Nias movie Iraono Sifagohi Tödö. Adopting a qualitative method, the research utilizes primary data derived from the film's dialogue transcriptions. The researcher employed reading, observation, and note-taking procedures to collect data, which were subsequently analyzed using a descriptive qualitative approach to interpret meanings and concepts. The results identified 20 instances of conversational implicature: 11 generalized and 9 particularized implicatures. Furthermore, the analysis revealed all six categories of presupposition: existential, factive, non-factive, lexical, structural, and counterfactual. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that research on conversational implicatures and presuppositions remains an underexplored topic. Therefore, the researcher encourages future studies to examine other linguistic aspects and objects. This analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of pragmatics within Nias cinema, highlighting how context shapes meaning and how underlying assumptions are structured in dialogue.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the continued occurrence of inaccuracies in Indonesian writing in online news, particularly in the aspects of spelling, punctuation, and standard word usage. Linguistic accuracy in news portals is important because online media not only convey information but also function as models of Indonesian language use in the digital public sphere. This study aims to identify and describe the forms of writing errors found in one selected Tribun Jabar news article, classify the types of errors, and provide corrected forms in accordance with Indonesian language rules. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using documentation, close reading, and note-taking techniques. The data were analysed through identification, classification, interpretation, and the formulation of alternative corrections based on the categories of spelling, punctuation, standard word usage, diction, and sentence effectiveness. The findings reveal 18 instances of writing errors. The most dominant errors occur in standard word usage, diction, and sentence effectiveness, with 8 instances (44.45%). Errors in spelling, typing, formatting, and writing consistency account for 6 instances (33.33%), while punctuation and spacing errors account for 4 instances (22.22%). These findings indicate that language problems in online news are not limited to technical inaccuracies but also involve imprecision in word choice and sentence construction. The study implies the need to strengthen journalistic language quality control, particularly in the editing process of online news production, and highlights the value of news texts as authentic materials for Indonesian language learning. However, because the analysis is limited to one selected news article, the findings cannot yet be generalized to the overall language practices of the Tribun Jabar news portal.

Abstract

This study examines taboo language in the Bajo community of Adonara Island, Indonesia, with a focus on its meanings and sociocultural functions. Taboo expressions (pemali) represent culturally prohibited forms of speech associated with moral values, social norms, and traditional beliefs. Despite extensive studies on taboo language in other Indonesian contexts, research on the Bajo language remains limited, particularly from an ethnosemantic perspective. This study aims to fill that gap by analyzing the meanings of taboo expressions used by Bajo speakers and exploring their cultural significance. A qualitative research design was employed, with data collected through observation, elicitation, and in-depth interviews involving native Bajo speakers and community leaders in Meko Hamlet, Adonara Island. The data were analyzed by identifying, classifying, and interpreting taboo expressions based on their semantic and cultural meanings. The findings reveal 22 taboo expressions categorized into three main groups: body-part-related taboos, animal-based taboos, and direct insulting expressions. These expressions operate on denotative, connotative, and symbolic levels. Beyond their literal meanings, they function as mechanisms for expressing emotions, enforcing social norms, and protecting personal and family honor. The study also highlights a generational shift, where younger speakers show limited understanding of the cultural values embedded in taboo language. This research contributes to the fields of linguistics and linguistic anthropology by demonstrating the role of taboo language as a reflection of cultural identity and social regulation. It also underscores the importance of preserving local linguistic traditions in the face of changing social dynamics.

Abstract

Many studies examine metacognitive strategies in reading. But this study examines the metacognitive strategies employed by Year 12 students at SMAK Syuradikara Ende during extensive reading activities, with the aim of identifying the use of planning, monitoring, and evaluation strategies. This study employed a mixed-methods approach. It combined quantitative data from questionnaires with qualitative data from semi-structured interviews. The research participants were 80 students. They were chosen purposively, namely, those who participated in extensive reading activities during classroom learning. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data, whilst the qualitative data were used to explore the students’ reading practices and experiences. The results of the study indicate that students applied metacognitive strategies in varying ways and with varying frequencies. Students frequently used the strategies of visualization, goal-setting, inferring meaning from context, and summarizing. The strategy of visualization was dominant. Contrariwise, two strategies were still used inconsistently: activating prior knowledge and identifying comprehension problems through self-questioning. These findings encourage educators to use metacognitive strategies in extensive reading to improve pupils’ performance and encourage them to overcome difficulties before, during, and after writing. Furthermore, research could investigate the factors influencing the use of these strategies.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the socio-religious paradox in Indonesia, where strong religious identities conflict with low levels of politeness in the digital space. Digital Civility Index data shows the rampant dehumanization, hate speech, and cyberbullying, which indicates the failure to internalize moral values into computer-mediated communication behavior. The main purpose of this research is to formulate a model for internalizing the value of Qaulan Karîma as a theoretical and practical solution to the ethical crisis. The method used is a qualitative-based literature study with a Thematic Tafsir (Maudhu'i) approach. The analysis was carried out by exploring Qur'anic verses related to Qaulan Karîmaand relating them to the dynamics of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) theory. The results of the study show that the internalization of values must be carried out through three transformative stages: cognitive-literative, affective-spiritual (through the concept of Digital Muraqabah), and psychomotor-habitual. The resulting communication typology comprises preventive, curative, and educational domains that serve as moral filters amid platform anonymity. This finding confirms that the character of polite communication is formed only when the value of the Qur'an extends beyond textual knowledge, becoming ingrained as a reflex of cyber behavior. The implications of this study demand reform of national digital literacy policies so that they do not focus solely on technical skills but also integrate the depth of religious spirituality into the character education curriculum. This model is expected to help build a more dignified, inclusive, and responsive Indonesian cyber ecosystem to address future challenges posed by information technology disruption.

Abstract

This study investigates the naming system of Baduy honey varieties as a linguistic mechanism for encoding and transmitting ecological knowledge. Drawing on primary data comprising 23 honey names collected through online documentation and secondary literature, the study applies three theoretical frameworks: onomastics, ecolinguistics (Stibbe, 2015), and frame semantics (Fillmore, 1982). The analysis identifies five principal naming patterns: bee-based naming, flora-based naming, place-based naming, sensory-based naming, and quality-based naming. The findings reveal that each honey name encodes a salient ecological attribute selected from a broader set of environmental knowledge, activating an ecological frame that encompasses knowledge about bee species, nectar sources, landscape, and harvesting practices. Building on these findings, this study introduces the concept of Ecological Frame Encoding (EFE), defined as the linguistic process through which a community selects the most ecologically salient attribute of an environmental entity, evokes the corresponding ecological frame, and encodes it into a stable name that facilitates the preservation and intergenerational transmission of local ecological knowledge. This study contributes to the fields of ecological onomastics and ecolinguistics by demonstrating that Baduy honey names are not merely commercial labels but function as ecological frames that archive local environmental memory.
