Abstract

In the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, communicative competence remains a crucial goal for higher education students. However, the roles of learning strategies—particularly metacognitive and socio-affective strategies in shaping communicative competence are still underexplored. This study aims to examine the predictive relationship between students’ use of metacognitive and socio-affective strategies and their overall communicative competence. Employing a quantitative approach with multiple regression analysis, data were collected from 120 EFL university students using standardized questionnaires. The findings revealed that socio-affective strategies significantly predicted students’ communicative competence, while metacognitive strategies did not demonstrate a significant effect. The results suggest that emotional regulation, interpersonal interaction, and social support are essential components in enhancing students’ ability to communicate effectively in English. This research contributes to applied linguistics and EFL pedagogy by emphasizing the importance of socio-affective dimensions in language learning and advocating for strategy-based instruction in classrooms. In terms of practical contribution, the study offers insights for language educators and curriculum developers to design more holistic and student-centered teaching strategies that promote not only linguistic knowledge but also emotional engagement and communicative confidence among students.

Abstract

Community Reading Centers (CRC) hold a critical role in educating the public and expanding access to knowledge, functioning as literacy centers, agents of social change, character builders, and skill developers. This study aims to determine the role of Rumah Baca Soka as a community reading center in building a culture of literacy within its community. Utilizing a qualitative method with a case study design, data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and subsequently analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings reveal that Rumah Baca Soka, as a community reading center, plays a strategic role in building community literacy through various functions: serving as an information center, broadening horizons and knowledge, providing educational entertainment, facilitating character development, and offering skills training. Strong community enthusiasm, volunteer involvement, an adequate book collection, and external support support the success of this CRC. Scientifically, this research contributes to enriching the literature on CRCs as community-based empowerment spaces that serve dual functions: as literacy centers, social interaction spaces, and means of developing life skills.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of teacher performance on student learning outcomes in mathematics using quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitatively, linear regression analysis revealed a strong positive correlation, with a regression coefficient of 0.563, meaning each unit increase in teacher performance led to a 0.563 unit improvement in student outcomes. The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.276) indicated that 27.6% of the variance in student achievement was explained by teacher performance, while other unexamined factors affected 72.4%. A T-test supported these findings, with a significance level of 0.01 (below the 0.05 threshold) and a t-value of 2.724, exceeding the critical value of 2.005, confirming statistical significance. These results affirm that teacher performance significantly impacts students' mathematical achievement. However, the relatively low R² suggests that other variables—such as curriculum quality, student motivation, parental involvement, or classroom environment—play essential roles. Qualitatively, the study underscores the need for further research to explore broader determinants of educational success and strategies to enhance teacher performance. By integrating both methods, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of how teacher quality shapes student learning and highlights the complexity of educational outcomes that extend beyond teacher-related factors.
