Abstract

Critical thinking skills are essential 21st-century competencies that should be developed from elementary education. However, students often struggle with higher-order thinking, worsened by the lack of engaging and contextual learning media. This study addresses the issue by developing interactive educational comics based on local culture through a fun learning approach to enhance students’ critical thinking. The study aims to produce learning media that are valid, practical, and effective in supporting arts and culture education while improving critical thinking skills. Using a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation), the research involved 71 fourth-grade students from SDN Bajo and SDN Wadukopa. Instruments included validation sheets, critical thinking tests, and questionnaires for teachers and students. The final analysis used a t-test and n-gain test. Results indicate the comics are valid based on expert evaluation, highly practical according to teacher and student responses, and effective in improving critical thinking. The t-test (sig. 0.000<0.05) confirmed significant differences in students’ skills before and after implementation, while the n-gain test showed a 96% increase. Thus, the interactive educational comic proves to be a feasible and impactful medium for developing critical thinking in elementary students.

Abstract

Critical and creative thinking skills in mathematics are essential competencies. However, many students still have difficulty understanding mathematical concepts because the learning approach is still conventional. The purpose of this study is to develop contextual and enjoyable mathematics teaching materials to improve students' critical and creative thinking skills through numeracy activities. In addition, the integration of the P5-based learning cycle can encourage holistic and applicable learning to real-world problems. The research method used the Borg & Gall Research and Development (R&D) model, which was modified into 8 stages. The research subjects were 60 fifth-grade students at SDN Inpres Dodirungga and Inpres Talabiu. Data collection instruments included validation sheets, response questionnaires, and tests. Data analysis used a completeness test, a mean difference test, and an N-gain test. The results showed that the pretest-posttest normality test had a Pvalue of 0.200 and 1.91 (P>0.05), and the homogeneity test had a P-value of 0.82 and 0.398 (P>0.05), indicating that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous. Meanwhile, the N-Gain scores for the control class (72.88) and the experimental class (72.73). Based on the results of the N-Gain test and the difference in means, it can be concluded that there was an increase in the pretest-posttest results of students (control-experimental), meaning that the development and use of P5-based learning cycle teaching materials had an effect on improving students' critical and creative thinking skills in elementary school.

Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates how translanguaging can be purposefully integrated within a balanced literacy framework in early primary classrooms in multilingual Indonesia. Conducted at a private elementary school in Sukabumi (Grades 1–3) where most students speak Sundanese at home and Indonesian at school, the study triangulates classroom observations (mini-lessons in phonics/phonology, dialogic read-alouds, shared/guided reading, independent reading), semi-structured interviews, and instructional artifacts (lesson plans, phonics progressions, running records, anecdotal notes). Findings show that when translanguaging is designed with clear micro-instructional goals—especially for cross-language phoneme contrasts, pre-teaching academic vocabulary, and brief think-alouds—teachers maintain and even strengthen the “balance” between explicit foundational skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, fluency, vocabulary) and meaning-making practices. Specifically, short, targeted use of the home language followed by immediate re-anchoring to Indonesian, supported by multimodal scaffolds (articulatory gestures, bilingual anchor charts, word cards), was associated with improved grapheme–phoneme accuracy, higher self-correction rates, and increased proportions of inference-based responses referenced to the text. Effects varied by learner profiles and text genre: emergent readers dominant in Sundanese benefited most in phonics and decoding, while bilingual or Indonesian-dominant students showed gains in vocabulary precision and inferencing, particularly with informational texts. The study proposes practical design rules—limit dose (1–2 sentences), re-anchoring to target language, and assessment-informed decisions—to minimize over-translation and align translanguaging with phonics and comprehension goals. The contribution is both conceptual (an operational model for integrating translanguaging into balanced literacy) and practical (observable indicators and routines aligned with the Indonesian curriculum). Limitations include a single-site scope and short duration; future work should examine longitudinal effects, varied home languages, and optimized “dosage” through small-scale design experiments.

Abstract

Nutritional problems and low numeracy literacy among elementary school students in Indonesia remain critical challenges that affect both academic achievement and health-related behaviors. This study aimed to develop a digital gamification-based learning media called Smart Nutrition to improve students’ numeracy literacy in the context of the Free Nutritious Meal Program. The research employed the ADDIE development model, consisting of analysis, design, and development phases, followed by expert validation. The media content integrated calorie counting, portion estimation, and interpretation of nutrition labels into gamified missions featuring points, badges, levels, leaderboards, and instant feedback. Validation by experts in media and content resulted in an average score of 94%, indicating that the product was categorized as very valid. These results suggest that the Smart Nutrition prototype is a feasible and innovative digital learning tool that combines gamification and nutrition-based numeracy content, and is ready for further trials on practicality and effectiveness in classroom settings.

Abstract

Academic writing has undeniably become essential in higher education for Master's students of EFL who must publish their work in reputable journals. Unfortunately, maintaining motivation, developing scientific writing, and other independent learning skills remain challenges for many students. The current study examined the role of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) in motivating EFL Master's students to write for academic purposes. A mixed-method design with an explanatory sequential approach was employed, involving 34 Master's students at Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. The quantitative data were collected first through a questionnaire and followed by qualitative data, which were collected through semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that Gen AI tools have a generally positive role in motivating students (r = 0.774, p < 0.01). It is reported that Gen AI helps students improve their writing skills, develop ideas, select vocabulary, and enhance their productivity. On the other hand, students encountered several challenges using Gen AI, such as inaccurate feedback, issues with subscription payment, and an inauthentic voice in writing. The current research uniquely examines Indonesian EFL Master's students, revealing the substantial motivational impact of Gen AI and previously unreported barriers, thereby surpassing prior studies that have focused mainly on cognitive gains or undergraduate contexts.

Abstract

The traditional architecture of Sa'o, which is the traditional house of Bajawa, demonstrates the preservation of environmental sustainability through local wisdom. This study aims to: (1) examine the values of local wisdom in the development and governance of Sa'o and the environment in Bena Village, and (2) analyze the role of this local wisdom as respect for nature and its relevance as an educational medium for students. The study concludes that the local wisdom of Bena Village is a valuable form of social and ecological capital. Therefore, a strategy is needed to help students understand, appreciate, and preserve these values so they can face global environmental challenges. The findings reveal that local wisdom in Sa'o enables students to maintain harmony in their lives through traditions and rituals that have been passed down for generations. This wisdom can also serve as a reference for knowledge and understanding to overcome and anticipate current local environmental issues, particularly those related to pollution.

Abstract

Mathematics is studied from basic education to higher education. Understanding math concepts is important to learn because it is related to numeracy skills and also to form the basis of understanding at a higher level. One of the important materials to study is division, especially remainder division. This study aims to analyze and compare the understanding of elementary school teachers and prospective mathematics teachers in solving division problems with remainders. This research is a descriptive qualitative. Data were collected through descriptive tests and in-depth interviews with 13 elementary school teachers and 19 mathematics education study program students. The results showed that 92.3% of teachers used the porogapit method in solving the remaining division problems, and the rest used the Gasing method.  Meanwhile, 63.16% of student teachers used the porogapit method and the rest showed more method variations. Although student teachers tended to be more thorough in completing the work, errors were still found due to inaccuracy and lack of conceptual understanding. Both groups have not shown a thorough mastery of the concept of remainder division. These findings provide a basis for improving the quality of mathematics learning.

Abstract

Motivated by the poor numeracy skills of primary school students in Manggarai Regency, this study examines teachers’ perceptions and experiences of implementing the Gasing method in mathematics classrooms, unlike previous studies that focused mainly on its impact on learning outcomes. The study aimed to describe teachers’ perceptions of using the method in the Langke Rembong sub-district. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through interviews and questionnaires; qualitative data were analysed using the Miles and Huberman model, while questionnaire data were analysed by percentage. The results indicate that most teachers perceive the Gasing method as effective in enhancing quick counting skills and understanding of basic mathematical concepts, although challenges remain in terms of limited training, diverse student readiness, and time constraints. These findings highlight the importance of teacher roles and institutional support in sustaining learning innovations, and suggest that the Gasing method has potential as an effective strategy for improving numeracy instruction in primary schools.
