Abstract

This study discusses the social functions of speech in pregnancy myths within the Javanese community of South Malang through a sociolinguistic perspective. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of social functions found in pregnancy myth utterances and the sociolinguistic meanings contained within them. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques consisting of observation, interviews, and documentation. The research data were in the form of oral utterances delivered by mothers, grandmothers, elders, husbands, and traditional birth attendants to pregnant women. The results of the study indicate that pregnancy myth utterances have four social functions, namely educational, regulative, protective, and cultural inheritance functions. The protective function is the most dominant because most utterances contain prohibitions and advice aimed at protecting pregnant women and unborn babies from physical, psychological, and spiritual risks. Pregnancy myth utterances reflect the close relationship between language, culture, belief systems, and the social life of the Javanese community in South Malang, which has been passed down from generation to generation.

Abstract

This In the male student community of Pondok Pesantren Roudlotul Ulum Karangtanjung Alian Kebumen, language use reflects a dynamic negotiation of politeness shaped by hierarchical relations and daily social interaction, yet systematic analysis of such politeness practices remains limited. This study aims to describe the forms of compliance and violations of Geoffrey Leech’s Politeness Principle in the daily interactions of male students. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, using 126 utterances as the data source collected through observation, recording, note-taking, and interviews. The data were analyzed using the extralingual equivalent method based on Leech’s six politeness maxims: tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy. The findings reveal 78 utterances indicating politeness compliance and 48 utterances showing politeness violations. Compliance is predominantly realized in approbation and tact maxims, particularly through expressions of praise, permission requests, and indirect requests. In contrast, violations frequently occur in agreement and approbation maxims, marked by rejection of suggestions and direct criticism among students. The study concludes that politeness practices among male students are context-dependent and fluctuate between adherence to and deviation from politeness norms. These findings contribute to pragmatics by enriching empirical evidence of politeness behavior in pesantren discourse and offer implications for language education in fostering more contextually aware communicative competence.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the formulation of Graduate Learning Outcomes (GLOs) based on the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI) Level 8 and their alignment with the vision of the Master’s Program in Islamic Education through an analysis of the Semester Learning Plan (RPS) for the Social History of Islamic Education course. The research employed a qualitative approach using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) on curriculum documents, including graduate learning outcomes, the study program vision, and the RPS. The findings reveal that the RPS contains systematic learning components that support the development of students’ critical thinking, analytical skills, and religious values. Its alignment with KKNI Level 8 is reflected in theoretical mastery, analytical competence, and active learning strategies through discussions and academic studies. However, the implementation of research-based learning, transdisciplinary approaches, and innovative scientific work remains suboptimal. Furthermore, the integration among GLOs, Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs), learning methods, and assessment systems requires further strengthening to better support graduate competencies at the master’s level. This study proposes revised GLO formulations emphasizing research-based knowledge development, multidisciplinary problem-solving skills, academic professionalism, and Islamic character. These findings are expected to contribute to curriculum evaluation and development in the Master’s Program in Islamic Education to ensure greater relevance to KKNI Level 8 standards and the contemporary needs of Islamic education.

Abstract

Dance education in schools is not only intended to develop students’ psychomotor skills but also serves as a crucial medium for transmitting local cultural values. However, based on preliminary observations conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Koto XI Tarusan, Pesisir Selatan Regency, the learning process of Minangkabau traditional dance is still heavily focused on mastering dance movements rather than understanding the history, philosophy, and cultural values embedded within the dance. This condition causes students to perform the dance properly while lacking an understanding of the symbolic meanings attached to each movement. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using observation, interviews, and documentation techniques to describe the implementation of traditional dance learning at the school. The findings indicate that the dominance of practical exercises has resulted in students’ limited cultural understanding, leading to a pedagogical gap. Therefore, a learning process that integrates skills, knowledge, and cultural values in a balanced manner is urgently needed. This study recommends the use of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach and the active involvement of local cultural figures to make dance learning more meaningful and culturally authentic.

Abstract

This study examines inclusive history learning at SMA Negeri 9 Surakarta, focusing on planning, implementation, and the barriers and solutions in implementing inclusive education. The objective was to determine how history learning is implemented to support educational services for students with special needs (ABK). The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study method, with data collection techniques including interviews, observation, and documentation, analyzed descriptively. The results indicate that inclusive education planning is implemented through the equal implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum (Independent Curriculum) without a specific curriculum for ABK, with technical learning adjustments that take into account the characteristics of ABK as athletes with disabilities under the Ministry of Youth and Sports. History learning utilizes the same learning modules, along with adjustments to methods, flexibility in time, and the use of Google Classroom. Obstacles that emerged included limited learning time, limited infrastructure, the lack of Special Assistance Teachers (GPK), and uneven distribution of inclusive training. Solutions implemented included flexible learning, group work, technology utilization, teacher competency development, and collaboration with the NPCI (National Institute of Indonesia). Overall, inclusive education at SMA Negeri 9 Surakarta operates adaptively to meet the needs of students.

Abstract

Speaking ability is a productive language skill that emphasizes accurate pronunciation, appropriate language structures, meaningful expression, and the suitability of language use in communication contexts. It involves mastery of phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects in oral communication. This study aims to: (1) describe students’ speaking ability in YouTube vlogs from a linguistic perspective; and (2) examine the effectiveness of the findings for learning, particularly in the development of digital media-based speaking instruction. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method because it focused on understanding the characteristics of students’ speaking ability in digital communication rather than conducting quantitative measurement. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques by carefully and repeatedly examining students’ YouTube vlog videos to identify utterances reflecting speaking ability. The identified utterances were transcribed and recorded in coding sheets to facilitate systematic data organization. The data consisted of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and oral discourse representing the use of phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data classification, and interpretation. Relevant data were selected and categorized according to linguistic aspects, then interpreted to explain how students’ speaking ability was demonstrated through digital communication in vlogs. The findings are expected to provide a clear description of students’ speaking ability in YouTube vlogs and to highlight the effectiveness of vlogs as a digital medium for supporting speaking instruction and enhancing students’ oral communication skills in contemporary learning environments.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the meaning contained in the Legend of Pesut Mahakam, especially the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings, using the semiotic theory developed by Roland Barthes. The Legend of Pesut Mahakam is one of the stories from the people of East Kalimantan that carries cultural value, a moral lesson, and the local understanding that the people of Kutai have. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a research type based on reference books. The main source of data comes from the text of the Legenda Pesut Mahakam, which is found in the book Cerita Rakyat Daerah Kalimantan Timur written by Noor dkk. Data is collected by reading and noting down, while data analysis involves identifying signs that have meaning in terms of denotation, connotation, and myth, based on the semiotic theory proposed by Roland Barthes. Research shows that the denotative meaning in the legend describes a series of events experienced by the character, starting from family life, unfair treatment by the stepmother, and the character's transformation into a villain. The implied meaning shows the feelings of unfairness, suffering, loneliness, responsibility, and regret that parents experience. This story shows how the community believes in the origin of Pesut Mahakam, passed down through generations, and includes moral values and local wisdom within it. Therefore, the Legend of Pesut Mahakam is not just a simple folk story, but also a way for the Kutai community to pass down their cultural values. The main keywords are wisdom.

Abstract

This research arose from the growth of social media as an online public platform that influences communication methods, including netizens' politeness. The purpose of this study is to explain the types of illocutionary speech acts and analyze compliance and violations of politeness principles in netizens' responses to the proposed gentengization in Folkative's Instagram post. The method used was descriptive qualitative with a pragmatic approach. Data was collected through a listening and note-taking technique on the top 100–160 comments, then analyzed using the distribution method based on John Searle's speech act theory and Geoffrey Leech's politeness principles. The research findings indicate that netizens employed various speech acts, such as representative, directive, expressive, and commissive. In terms of politeness, compliance and violations were identified, with the most frequent violations occurring in the maxims of appreciation and agreement. This suggests that interactions on social media tend to be more expressive and less organized. This research contributes to enriching the study of digital pragmatics and raising public awareness of polite communication in online public spaces.
