Abstract

Objective: This study explores the role of the Ribat institution within the Sokoto Caliphate, a significant Islamic empire in 19th-century West Africa. The research aims to analyze the historical context, functions, and impact of Ribat in the spread of Islam, Islamic education, and the defence of Muslim territories. Given the centrality of the Sokoto Jihad in transforming the socio-political and intellectual landscape of Hausaland and beyond, the study particularly examines how Ribat contributed to the development of learning and scholarship, making knowledge an essential tool in Islamic propagation. Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework of this study is based on the concept of Islamic governance and educational institutions in classical and modern Islamic thought. It highlights the role of fortified religious centres in sustaining Islamic civilizations and their function as hubs of learning and social cohesion. Literature Review: A review of the literature includes prior studies on the Sokoto Jihad, the establishment of the Sokoto Caliphate, and the role of Ribat in Islamic history. Previous research has largely focused on the political and military aspects of the Jihad, with limited attention to the institutional development of Ribat and its intellectual contributions. This study seeks to fill this gap by analyzing Ribat’s role beyond military defence, particularly its influence on Islamic education and community development. Methods: The research employs a historical and analytical approach, utilizing primary sources such as manuscripts from Sokoto scholars and secondary sources on Islamic governance in West Africa. Through qualitative analysis, the study reconstructs the historical significance of Ribat and evaluates its implications for contemporary Muslim societies. Results: Findings reveal that Ribat played a crucial role in the dissemination of Islamic knowledge, strengthening Muslim identity, and ensuring the security of the Islamic state. It functioned as both a centre of learning and a defensive stronghold, reinforcing the Caliphate’s intellectual and religious authority. Implications: The study’s implications highlight the need for modern Muslim communities to revisit and adapt the Ribat model in addressing contemporary challenges, particularly in the fields of Islamic education, community empowerment, and faith preservation. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its comprehensive examination of Ribat beyond its conventional military function, positioning it as a cornerstone of Islamic intellectual and social development. This perspective contributes to the broader discourse on the historical and modern relevance of Islamic institutions.

Abstract

Objective:  This study aims to critically evaluate the application of Islamic integrative epistemology in the Computer Science Study Program at the University of Muhammadiyah Kudus, focusing on the extent to which Islamic values are internalized in the curriculum, teaching methods, and academic culture. Theoretical framework:  This study uses the Islamic integrative epistemological framework as an effort to answer epistemological concerns that arise due to the dominance of dichotomous and positivistic paradigms, especially in non-religious disciplines such as Computer Science. This epistemology seeks to harmonize Islamic science and general science in a coherent set of values. Literature review: The literature review includes a discussion of epistemological crises in modern higher education, technocratic tendencies in the development of exact science, and the concept of scientific integration in an Islamic perspective. Emphasis is also placed on the importance of instilling moral and spiritual values in learning in Islamic universities. Methods: This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. The data collection technique was carried out through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation analysis of academic activities within the Computer Science Study Program, University of Muhammadiyah Kudus. Results:  The results of the study show that efforts to integrate Islamic values in the development of Computer Science are still symbolic and fragmented. The main obstacles stem from the low epistemological awareness among academics and the strong dominance of technocratic approaches. Nevertheless, there are promising integration opportunities in courses such as Professional Ethics and Islamic Religious Education, which can be developed through a reflective and transdisciplinary pedagogical approach. Implications:  A reformulation of value-based curriculum, improved epistemological literacy, and cross-disciplinary synergy are needed to encourage more substantial scientific integration in Islamic universities. Novelty:  This study presents a new perspective on the application of Islamic epistemology in Computer Science, with an emphasis on the deep integration of values to form graduates who are both technological and have Islamic character.

Abstract

Objective: Research to determine the effect of the use of Games Quizizz-based applications on students' emotional intelligence in PAI and Al Islam subjects at SD Muhammadiyah PK Palur. Theoretical framework: this research focuses on the theory of emotional intelligence, which emphasizes the importance of students' ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions in the learning process, as well as game-based learning theory, which is believed to increase student motivation and involvement. Literature review: Previous research has shown that the use of technology-based learning media and interactive games such as Quizizz is able to improve students' material understanding and social-emotional skills, but not many have specifically linked it to increased emotional intelligence in the context of religious education. Methods: This study uses a quantitative approach with a true experimental design in the form of a pre-test and post-test control group design. The sample consisted of two classes, namely classes 1A and 1B which each amounted to 23 students. Data was collected through an emotional intelligence questionnaire using the Likert scale and the score of the Quizizz game, which contained 20 questions from PAI and Al Islam materials with varying levels of difficulty. Results: The study showed that there was a significant influence of the use of the Quizizz application on the improvement of students' emotional intelligence, as evidenced by the results of the t-test, which obtained a calculated t value of 7,803 greater than the t-table of 1,708, and a significance value of 0.00 < 0.05. Implication: This study shows that the integration of game applications such as Quizizz in PAI and Al Islam learning can be an effective strategy for improving students' emotional intelligence from an early age. Novelty: this research lies in the application of game-based learning, especially through the Quizizz platform, which is directly associated with the increase in emotional intelligence in the context of religious education learning.

Abstract

Objective: This study investigates the role of Islamic values in shaping interreligious relations within pluralistic societies, focusing on Kenya and Indonesia as comparative case studies. The objective is to analyse how Islamic teachings, particularly the principles of taʿāyush (coexistence), raḥma (compassion), and ʿadl (justice), inform Muslim engagement with non-Muslim communities in diverse socio-political contexts. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework draws upon Qur’anic ethics and the Prophetic tradition as models for peaceful coexistence, contextualized within the broader discourse of religious pluralism and interfaith dialogue. Literature review: Prior studies on Islamic education and interfaith relations emphasize ethical principles like ʿadl, raḥma, and taʿāyush in conflict resolution. However, few compare regional approaches. This study fills that gap by analyzing Islamic peacebuilding practices across Kenya and Indonesia within the framework of the SDGs and religious pluralism. Method: Methodologically, this research employs a qualitative, comparative case study approach, integrating historical analysis, textual interpretation, and contemporary field data from both countries. Results: Findings reveal that Islamic traditions in both Kenya and Indonesia offer rich resources for fostering social cohesion and resisting sectarianism. Kenyan Muslim initiatives emphasize grassroots reconciliation in post-conflict zones, while Indonesian Islamic movements focus on institutional interfaith collaboration and education. These responses align with global peacebuilding frameworks, contributing to the realization of Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Implications: The study’s implications highlight the potential of Islamic interfaith engagement to mitigate religious tensions and promote inclusive governance. Novelty: Its novelty lies in the cross-regional comparison of Islamic interfaith strategies and its grounding in both classical Islamic sources and contemporary global development agendas. The research offers a nuanced, actionable model for faith-based peacebuilding in multicultural contexts.
